Return to Home Feature DELETED! / DJI Mini 4 Pro VS Mini 2 Test

Has DJI really DELETED our favorite Return to Home feature? You may not like how this plays out so stick around to see what's going on.
There we were, minding our own business, when suddenly we saw a comment from G Rossi 46 saying DJI has deleted one of my favorite Return to Home features. His comment said when the DJI Mini 4 Pro's Return to Home flight is activated, the pilot no longer has control of the yaw or the height controls. Immediately I knew this was something we needed to test with both the DJI Mini 4 Pro and the DJI Mini 2 drones.
Today we went out with both of our Mini 2 drones (Jack and Rose) along with our DJI Mini 4 Pro (Dwight) to test this out and see if our fear was true. We pitted all 3 drones against each other to see which one (if any) still had this special return to home feature and which one(s) lost the control. Stick around to see what happens. Again, I say you may not like these results.

Just a note on the precision landing for the Mini 4. The DJI manual advises that the drone is taken straight up to 7m high before doing anything else, to give the drone a good view of the landing location. They say it improves the accuracy of the precision landing feature.

I abide by the manufacturers recommendation on this and can confirm phenomenal Mini 4 RTH landing accuracy. I also use a high contrast landing pad. It has gotten to the point that I can basically attend to other stuff like packing up and preparing to move to another location or even make a phone call while the drone is headed back for an RTH landing.

Thanks for watching and commenting, Pete! I saw that in the manual and have had the same great results when I implement the 7 meter height suggestion. I don’t always use the orange landing pad on the truck bed and even still it gets pretty close on that black bed cover. Lol. The landing pad definitely helps make it more accurate though. The reason for the different behavior has to do with Obstacle Avoidance. Drones without OA are free to yaw about during RTH. Drones with OA cannot. The reason is the OA sensors obviously need to face forward in order to detect obstacles, hence no yawing. This makes perfect sense for drones that only offer forward or forward/rear OA like the Mini 3 Pro. More detail below... Another super annoying change to RTH is the ability to abort the climb to RTH altitude by bumping the down throttle. You used to be able to set the altitude high, then easily abort the full climb when not needed. This no longer works. Now if you hold down it aborts RTH completely, inexplicably altering a practice that has been in effect for many years. To dive deeper into the OA/yaw issue, with the older Go4 flight program, users could disable OA both during flight and, with a separate toggle, during RTH. With OA disabled during RTH, drones like the Mavic Pro, Mavic 2, & Phantom 4 could yaw about during RTH like their non-OA siblings. Unfortunately Fly offers no means to disable OA during RTH. Even when OA is set to off, it kicks in automatically during RTH, preventing OA-enabled birds that use the Fly app from yawing about during RTH. What makes no sense is the latest generation of birds like the Mavic 3, Air 3, & Mini 4 Pro, offer 360° obstacle avoidance. There really is no logical reason that these models should not be permitted to yaw about during RTH. In a similarly illogical move, these models also disable OA when flown with the Goggles 2/Integra with Head Tracking enabled. Again this makes no sense since these models provide full 360° OA. BTW, if you touch the sticks during the landing phase of RTH it aborts Precision Landing.

That explains thing perfectly, man. I totally understand and agree 100% that with drones offering 360 OA, the operator should be able to have some controls like yaw and height. Maybe they enabled it in the Mini 2 originally so you could avoid hitting something on the way home but their logic is with the OA now available, the drone surely won’t make a mistake and hit something. Lol. They need to reconsider that because there are several instances already where the drone flew directly into a building or tree and the operator had no control. I guess you could always keep your finger on the cancel button and if you saw something odd you could abort but I’d rather just be able to fly around the obstacle, eh? I didn’t know they had deleted this feature with the Mini 3 pro so I guess this didn’t come as a surprise to a lot of people. I’m out of the loop! Lol. I bought a Mini 4 Pro a few weeks ago. On my first flight, I got a low battery warning and a RTH in 10 seconds notification. It flew directly to the biggest tree in the park on it's way and landed in it. I saw it, and tried to correct it's course but of course was locked out of the controls....all I could do was watch it land 50' plus up in the tree. It was a gentle landing and didn't even nick a prop, but cost me $$$ to hire a bucket truck to retrieve it... can't say I was too impressed.

That’s gotta be the worst feeling when flying a drone. Just sitting and watching it do something crazy like that? It’s really weird that it landed in a tree like that. I’d have no idea why it would do that. Aloe is right though. We still have control of the pause button so we can at least stop the RTH flight if something is weird. Oh, when you get a low battery RTH message you can hit cancel on that and it won’t return home right away. Also, when it’s in auto land mode or critical low battery mode, sometimes you can push up on the stick to keep it from going any lower. I can only imagine how much that bucket truck cost. Sorry man!

I think panic took over...didn't know I could cancel the RTH....I learned a lot in that short flight...In hindsight, I can't really blame the drone. I did luck out on the bucket truck...the shop was only about 8 minutes from where the drone was stuck. Their rate was $250/hour but when I told him what I needed it for, he offered to go out for $100.

Ive always wanted a DJI drone, but I couldn't afford one. I recently started making excellent money, so I just bought a Mini 4 pro with rc 2 remote, & the fly more + battery kit, & the AIR 3 Fly more combo & I also bought the Integra goggles motion 2 combo. It was a varry expensive order. I received this order a month ago but ive been waiting for decent weather to fly them. Im also buying the 2 year Care refresh plans for both before I try & fly them. Are these good beginner drones, that ill be able to fly without much issues, or did I bite off more than I can chew?

I don’t think at all that you bit off more than you can chew. I think it is a matter of not being able to have cake and eat it too. You could always turn off the AR but you can't have both. I am impressed once again with your choice for video title construct. Of course the RTH feature has not been deleted but your title sure attracts attention and you have to click on and watch the video to understand the parody. It is a unique form of click bait and you should get credit for originality.

Hey Kevin, I did a test to see how important it is to do a compass calibration before flying. I did two flights without doing a compass calibration and two flights after doing a compass calibration. Flight out around 900 feet each test and used RTH each time. Without a compass calibration the drone was around 4 to 6 feet from the landing pad. With a compass calibration the drone (Mavic Air 2) was spot on. Have you tried this? God Bless you and Kristie.

Compass cals every flight is not necessary unless the drone tells you. 4-6 ft is decent as GPS is not perfect and may be some variation on landing. But your choice to do it for every flight. Why RTH on every flight? Can you not fly back yourself?

Great test my friend but I can explain the reason behind the mini 4 pro limiting what you can do with the return to home. It's all about the AR Return to home and the drone needs to follow that path. If you were going to change it with the yaw or the altitude it would alter the pre determined path Dwight already calculated. Hope that solves the mystery of the drone, as far as the audio that's a mystery that could be a number of different reasons but it may be electrical interference.

I've had a Mavic Air 2 and an Air 2s. Both of them respond the same way your Mini 4 Pro did. The only thing that works on my Air 2S is the gimbal when it's returning to home.. I know that the yaw doesn't work, but I don't know about the speed in RTH mode. I'll give that a try the next time I go flying.

Excellent tests Kev! I noticed that about no controls on the Mini 4 while in RTH mode also, which is very disappointing. I hope DJI changes that in a future update. At least we still have gimbal control. BTW, I forgot I had Faith set on Optimal RTH. That's why she didn't go up to the preset RTH altitude. Even though I can't control her with the sticks while in RTH, I love the way she finds her way home weaving through the woods. I really appreciate your tests, Kev. Looks like you were still using the older version of the DJI fly app have you not updated the app to the latest version? 1.12.8 on your phone when flying the mini 2? Only the mini 2 and mini 2se will allow you to completely spin the drone around when returning to the home point. Thats a special feature that the mini 2 has that the other drones dont have unfortunately. I have the mini 2 mini 3 mini 3 pro and mini 4 pro plus the air 2 Air 2s And air 3 and the avata but only the mini 2 will let you spin the drone around while its engaged in RTH mode

Lol yea we have 2 Mini 2 drones and we have kept one of them on and older firmware and an old fly app 1.4.8 version while we keep the other mini 2 updated to the most current stuff. I was really surprised to see this feature wasn’t available for the 4 pro but after reading a bunch of comments I guess I’ve just been out of the loop again. Haha. Nothing new there. Operating a drone from inside your vehicle blocks LOS, which should not be done. It's also a partial faraday cage, which may inhibit connectivity with the drone.

Lol thanks for the advice, brother. I can agree at times it may block LOS briefly but I always fly the drone directly in front of the truck or to the driver side so I can keep a visual. The only time it’s really out of my LOS is when it’s hovering above the truck so I normally get out to watch it land. Also, we’ve done extensive tests regarding the signal inside vs outside the vehicle and have found no impact. Granted we don’t fly out very far and if we were to fly out further it may cause some issues but for us it works great. Thanks again for the info and for watching. God bless! Kevin

Very nice tests. It is beyond me why DJI doses incorporate the upgrades into the existing Drones. Little things like the RTH indicator, night mode and WayPoint missions would be so great on the Air 2S with its better camera but for whatever reason DJI doesn't enable them on all drones. We need some good hacker to unlock them for us..

When the mini two was young, you could not control-yaw or up and down on the way home. that was given to us in a update when the drone got older. never had control of yaw or up and down with mini three or mini 4

My mini2 has gone over a thousand miles and it’s still amazingly looks and flys like the first time I flew it. I own the mini 3 pro and the min4 pro all because of the mini2. LoL. Did not expect this. Thanks for the informations. I think it is essential to have the ability to override the autonomous RTH movements, f.i. if the drones obstacle avoidance seems to miss some oncoming tree branches. Without this ability you have to have your finger right next to "Tap to cancel RTH" all the time because it is the only thing left to do to avoid problems on the RTH path. DJI should fix that.

Awesome and future congrats on the Mini 4 pro. You’re gonna have a blast no doubt. These drones are amazing and are about as dependable as they come. You won’t have any problems finding places to fly. I use the Air Data UAV app on the iPhone to make sure I’m not in a restricted area and if I am, there’s a LAANC clearance request option on the same app so you can get your clearances without having to go to a different app. I usually launch and land from public areas so I don’t need to ask permission from a landowner. You don’t typically need their permission to fly over their property but you don’t wanna annoy anyone, right? If I’m flying over a neighborhood, I’ll usually keep the height up a bit to not attract attention and I’ve never had any problems. The reason for it (I am told) is so that the green overlay maximally stays in-camera. It is a shame. I would actually like a full headless RTH mode so that we could yaw 360 degrees as the aircraft remained course locked to the home point.

Lol yea I forget to put them out at least 80% of the time. With that cover on the controller, I don’t see them so out of sight out of mind. With the short distances we fly though I don’t think it makes any difference though, eh?

I'm sure you've seen in the comments that OA is causing the issue (if you want to call it an "issue"). As for the clicking in your audio, could be UHF or VHF interference, or a bad cable, or low battery. Another good experiment brother. I'm gonna guess you'll be doing this one again with the OA disabled on Dwight.

Lol yea it makes total sense the OA is causing the “difference” in feature. Apparently from what I’ve read in the comments, the Mini 2 is the only drone with that feature. That’s strange but it’s just another way the Mini 2 shines. Haha. Regarding the audio, I’m really hoping it was just a bad cable connection. These systems are too expensive to not work right. Especially now that the warranty is gone! Lol

Lol I use RTH a lot especially lately but I never tried to move the mini 4 pro around during the trip apparently. When they brought this feature to the fly app with the Mini 2 a couple years ago, there were videos about it for weeks. I guess it lost its appeal lol. Don’t listen to Lorenzo, man. Keep flying those FPV drones. You got skills!!!! Dave’s just jealous like I am. Hahaha.

@@WeretheRoberts I believe you have a Ford truck. I think the newer models are getting an Android OS in a relationship with Google. I'm not sure if Android OS was used in prior years but it would just be a matter of reprogramming the unit. Perhaps even incorporate A.I. so the new Martha voice can yell at you when she determines you're doing something questionable again. Or, remind you when you're talking to yourself.

so the mini 3 and mini 4 cant do stuff the mini 2 can ha ha that will realy get up the noses of the mini 4 pro owners noses. they think their drone is the king of the mini drones. this proves its not............ i like doing video on the weay back to me, simply hit rth and then swing round to either right or left and shoot some action that turns out ultra smooth... very good reason never t oget rid of jack and his dronefriend.
