Dorothy sets off to find her friends, without knowing the Wicked Witch is watching them in her Crystal Ball. She finds and oils Rusty who has rusted after the Witch tricked him. They find Socrates in a cornfield on a pole scaring crows again and get him down. They find Dandy crying, and after some unexpectedly cruel bullying from Socrates and Rusty, they cheer him up. After the four friends are reunited, they arrive at the Emerald City, only to be tricked by the Witch, who has captured the Wizard and taken over as the ruler of Oz. The Wizard, who in this continuity is not an Omaha huckster but an Ozite born and bred and the elected ruler of Oz, tells them to destroy her again and he will give them what they want. She arrives back at her castle just before Dorothy and her friends, but before they arrive she sends flying alligators to kill them. Socrates' quick thinking saves them as they hide under his straw (a method employed in more than one of the Oz books). Rusty saves them from a lightning bolt by sacrificing himself, which kills him, despite his being made of tin. Dorothy asks Glinda if she will help and a glowing ball brings him back to life. They arrive and are trapped by the Witch. She grabs Dorothy and tries to take her silver slippers. The gang (including the Wizard himself) tries to get her back from the Witch, who gives her and Dandy the slippers. Dorothy, who is being held upside-down from the window, tells Dandy that he will turn to stone if he takes them, but he takes them anyway without being turned to stone. The Witch takes them only to be turned into stone, crumble, and fall apart. The gang returns to the Emerald City, only to find out that the Wizard is, after all, a humbug, unable as he always was to return Dorothy home. Glinda appears to tell Dorothy the reason that her friends didn't turn to stone, because they had brains, a heart, and courage. She also explains that the Witch was cruel and heartless, brainless enough to think that evil could conquer good and cowardly in that she used slaves and suppressed others. Dorothy wishes to go back, and instantly, a Kansas twister whisks her and Toto back home to Aunt Em and Uncle Henry again.

@@jemofthe80s18 Nothing at all against Judy Garland; she created an iconic, and indeed adorable, take on the character, and I love to watch her in the 1939 movie. But the Dorothy Gale of the books is very brave and down-to-earth sensible, and those qualities are very well-reflected in the Corinne Conley/Susan Conway/Susan Morse Dorothy.

46:36 well the wicked witch wanted the slippers so badly that she didn't think about the potential harm they could do her?! Margaret Hamilton's take on the wicked witch in the 1939 film who wanted the ruby red slippers so bad didn't know how much power the slippers had? Why did her sister The Wicked Witch Of the East not turn to stone then before she got crushed by Dorothy's farmhouse???

@@GottaLottaToys Well she wanted power. She did get conned by the wizard in the end. Theodora believed he was a trusted person before she became wicked and green. She wanted him to rule with her and her sister Evanora. We want someone or something we can't always have in life. It's not bad to want it a little..but yes your right, getting greedy can consume you from the inside and you just want more and more...and before you know it you'll want the world. I wouldn't want the world seeing as all sadness and hardship the world has had and all its evils it has brought over the centuries/decades) and illnesses like cancer and diease.

It's interesting how in the original film, the Cowardly Lion embodies a stereotypical 1930's depiction of a flamboyant gay male... as opposed to this incarnation, in which the Cowardly Lion, while undoubtedly a unique and differently stylized performance, depicts the character as a stereotypical, flamboyant gay male... but through a 1960's perspective... So, while two entirely different performances, they're both essentially lampooning the same offensive societal construct of what a gay man or *that thing Don Knott's does in Three's Company to imply John Ritter's Character is gay without ever saying the word 'gay'* man was in their respective era, albeit with 25 years of social change in between (and actually, if we're going from the the late 1930's to the mid 1960's, mainstream society was likely LESS tolerant of gay people by the mid 1960's, with things really beginning to change for the better towards the end of that decade.

I always loved the Lion best because Bert Lahr was so brilliant. Even as a proud gay man, I actually love most of the "sissy" and "fairy" caricatures from the 1930s because they are most often played by talented, hilarious gay men (Lahr being an exception--meaning not a gay man, as far as I know)--just as many of the reductive female characters of the time were portrayed by fantastic women who made all of their movies worthwhile.
@RayPointerChannel
@RayPointerChannel Жыл бұрын
I don't quite know where the idea came from that the film depicted The Cowardly Lion as a "stereotypical 1930s depiction of a flamboyant gay male." Bert Lahr's performance was NOTHING of the sort. He portrayed a "big bag of wind" character that pretended to be a bully who was really a coward--as most men of that type really were. The only "gay" connection would have been in his self-deprecating remark in the song, "I'm just a 'dandy lion." That was an ironic, literary joke. But there is nothing "gay" about his character. He's more of a comical, lovable oaf. People are too quick to read present-day realizations and perhaps project self-conscious personal perspectives, or personal reflections onto something that was not really there.
@Oecobius33
@Oecobius33 Жыл бұрын
The 1930s lion wasn't remotely gay, he was just hammy. It was a very vaudeville style of acting. Even this 60s lion just sounds goofy; it's a common type of old comedic voice. When you see a goofy clownish character and your first reaction is "that's like the queers," then congrats, you're the one who's doing the bigoted stereotyping here.
@MaskedMan66
@MaskedMan66 Жыл бұрын
Wrong on so many counts. In the very first place, the MGM movie isn't the "original." That honor belongs to the Selig Company's 1910 movie _The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,_ in which the Cowardly Lion is played by an actor in a lifelike lion suit requiring him to walk on all fours. Secondly, Lahr was playing a loudmouth braggart and playing the bombastic egotist to cover his shame of being cowardly.
