It's New Year's eve and lashing down with rain, yet you have transported me to the other side of the world, to a place where dreams are made. Many thanks to all involved.

I'm puzzled. When Joern was fighting the huge Napolean, it SEEMED that several times he had the opportunity to fight the fish "on the reel" (where the drag could have done its job), yet he didn't do that. All I know is that MY fingers and palms are a poor substitute for the smooth drag on my expensive fly reel. Thanks, as always, for sharing this last day of the trip with us, Peter.

Hi Chris, good spot! The reason he was handlining it is if you give them any line at all they cut you off in the coral. When they take in that depth of water they are normaly very close to thier coral houses so your only real chance is to winch it up as fast as possible. It takes so much strength to hang onto the line that if you tried to get it on the reel it would all be over. Those big green giants are very challenging.. :)

@@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing Of course! Having dealt with several large-ish grouper on the reefs of the Yucatan, I've experienced this problem first-hand. Especially in less than 20' of water, there wasn't time for me to get these fish on the reel, and I, too, broke them off while trying to stop them with my hands! Thanks for reminding me . . .

Pete - Which flats boots and gaiters are you wearing in this episode, they look sturdy and sand proof?
@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I wear the simms neoprene sock/ gaiter and the boots are Simms Freesalt… very robust for this kind of fishing..

So pretty if you didn’t catch a fish it would still be a wonderful trip.
