What rod case do you use ? I see it goes slim into the Panga

Good effort on the review. One very obvious bit missing from a 'click' reel review and that is, WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE!! Listened to this several times and no where can you actually hear what it sounds like, FAIL!

can i use the lwt7 version of this reel on a 10ft 7wt echo lago stillwater rod? i’m a beginner so i don’t know, i just see many people putting these click n pawl reels on fiberglass/bamboo

Absolutely you can, just a question of do you want a spring and pawl reel you need to palm or a more modern disc drag reel that will do the braking for you..

How would this line in 12wt match up for my 12' 8/9 wt, fast action spey rod. Im running 510 grain shooting heads on it, and it does great. I just want to condese my gear, and also strip my line closer in and not worry about to loop connection. I've been exclusively beach fishing the year and want a little smoother go at it.

Hi, very good video! I am going to Cook Island in the end of November for flyfishing. I am bringing a Hardy Zane 9ft #7 for Bonefish and a Hardy Zane Pro 9ft #11 for GT. Do you think that this will do or do you have any other thoughts?

Hey there. Before I order one and get the drill out (bear with me on that sir...), how tough is the plastic rim that rises from the lid and what's its design? The downside for me is it's got no way of attaching a clip to it to attach to a bag or fishing yak to stop it falling out or overboard. My thinking is drill a hole through that lid rim and we're there, but would that cause the bottle to leak, or would it not be strong enough to hold the weight if it fell?
@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishingАй бұрын
Gonna be honest, really no idea. Plastic seems pretty thick to me, and no, would not make it leak as the inner workings of the cap and seal are much lower… would probably work…. 🤷♂️
@chrisjpainterАй бұрын
@@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing Thanks for the swift reply. You've convinced me. Looks like you can buy the lids separately, so if I cause a disaster, there's a way back!

Very useful video. I am going for the first flyfishing trip, in December, to Cook Island. Been fishing for many years at home in Sweden, and in Mauritius, St. Brandon, Tanzania, but never flyfishing and never for Bonefish. Soooo looking forward to it! Going with a #7 for Bonefish and #11 for GT. A lot on my mind planing for everything. Your channel has been a good help! Thank You! I have a question for GT fishing: Do you still change the loop of the flyline, even if you buy a Rio Elite Bonefish WF11?
@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing2 ай бұрын
It depends.. they have just released a new Elite that has a new loop design on it which is designed by the guides on Providence… they are fine, previous normal loops I would still cut off.. glad the information is useful and good luck!

That big, you're gonna want wheels.
@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing2 ай бұрын
Nope, adds too much weight for charter aircraft, that’s why it’s so good. Most charters have a weight limit of 15kg, add big wheels makes it normally 5kg before you have out anything in it. The pack pack straps make it very easy to hump around..

No contest, Fortuna every time… the Zane carbon is fine up to a 9#, but anything bigger you really need the drag on the Fortuna…

What do you recommend for Christmas Island GT Fishing, on a 12WT rod ? 10k or 12k reel ?
@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing2 ай бұрын
Hi there, I have both and the 10000 is certainly up to it and can take a 12# line… the 12000 is a big reel, although light. I now use the 10000 on my 11# and the 12000 on my 12#. For backing capacity the 12000 is better…

I realize the SDSL is a mid-range saltwater fly reel from 6+ years ago and was in the shadows of the older model Fortuna, but why did Hardy move away from it so quickly? In my opinion this is a great value reel given it's performance (16 lbs of drag), weight, 340 degree drag knob, and durability in the saltwater environment. It was offered at a price point where there weren't a lot of other options given this combination of attributes. Not to mention the attractive silver and blue aesthetics and detailing that Hardy has clearly returned to in the new Fortuna Regent series reel released in 2023.
@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing3 ай бұрын
I agree with you and still have a couple.. great budget saltwater reel. I think they moved away from it only because it occurred about the same time as the buyout, so management changed along with change of focus…

Hi there I’m going on my first saltwater fishing trip to Mauritius it’s a combined holiday with my wife so will be fishing opportunist times and not every day. I’ve watch the excellent video and wanted to know what I can take in as hand luggage in my backpack now in 2024 . Flying with emirates airline , could I Take my flies boxes spare reel spool Loaded with fly line in the backpack ? Also pliers and my hard rod case and main kit I presume will need to go in the main suitcase luggage and in the aircraft hold ? Your advise is greatly appreciated! Love the videos Kindest regards Dave Lloyd
@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing3 ай бұрын
David I am afraid these days you can’t take anything in hand luggage, it all needs to go in the hold… flies are ‘dangerous’ and I have seen them make some one strip all their line and backing off a reel and throw it in the bin. Rods as well…

Thank you pete for the advise and noted all will go in my main luggage! Look forward to seeing you at the sportfish meet on the 20th September !! Kind regards Dave

Well I bit the bullet and got one of these (in a #6) - fantastic, beautiful to look at and beautiful in use. Also had to treat myself to a Perfect (for a #5) - if you haven't had one of these Peter, you need to discover the ultimate. Duchess remains my #4 and I've a Lightweight (Featherweight) for my #3. Hardy happiness. As far as palming the reel is concerned, both the Lightweight Series and the Perfects are enclosed rim, but there is a way of using your free fingers on the side of the spinning reel (the porting assists) to exert some extra control on a running fish. I suppose the only real downside to all these reels is the relatively small arbour, but that just comes with the territory.

Species of fish not really sure as this would be my first salt water fly 0:01 experience and off the cuff to , Species possibly if I’m lucky permit , Bonefish ect Also not sure what tapered leader to use possibly the Rio’s ? I deliberately set up my spinning reels to wind in left handed and my fly reels to wind in right handed. The argument about holding your rod in your strongest arm thus really doesn’t become relevant as both forearms are roughly similar in strength. There is something about stripping fly line with the left hand and winding with my right which feels more natural to me. At the end of the day it is all about which feels most comfortable to the angler. Fly fishing is full of dogma and those that are pushing a particular perspective. I agree with you that doing what feels most comfortable is critical as behaviour needs to be instinctive when fighting fish.

@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. At the Tsimane helicopter programme in the Bolivian jungle, they limit environmental impact through several strategic measures. Their operations prioritize the use of eco-friendly aviation fuel to reduce carbon emissions. They employ precise flight planning to minimize fuel consumption and avoid sensitive ecological areas. Additionally, regular maintenance of their helicopters ensures optimal engine performance and reduces emissions. They also engage with local communities to implement sustainable practices, such as supporting reforestation projects and wildlife conservation efforts, to offset any environmental footprint their activities may leave. The entire Tsimane fishing programme is operated in conjunction with the local tribes and is why it is such a success.
