It’s a beautiful afternoon on October 8, 2024. Many of the Aspen trees have shed their leaves, especially in the higher elevations, but closer to Chama, the gold is still vibrant.
Looking down the Los Pinos valley, we see Cumbres & Toltec 489 turn north bringing the Antonito to Chama train home. Sometimes it will stop at the water tank, but today it continues up the 2 percent grade toward Cumbres Pass.
The trains always stop at 10.022 foot Cumbres Pass, sometimes to take on water but always to check the bearings and brakes before continuing down the 4 percent grade.
Beyond Windy Point, which can be seen in the background above Highway 17, the train makes the tightest curve on the 64 mile railroad in the Wolf Creek Valley before the straightaway toward the crossing at Coxo.
The train departed Antonito at 10 AM, stopped at Osier for lunch, and then pulled into Chama around 4PM. There is no bad time to ride the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, but fall is the most popular. Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado put on an incredible show of turning Aspens and Cottonwood trees before succumbing to the cold and snow that is a few weeks away.
