Returning to RuneScape in 2023 - Building a Main #1

I wanted to get back into Runescape, and I wanted a main account. This series is my journey of returning to mainscape and challenging the add old adage of "the rich get richer" by seeing how long it takes us to get established by getting access to all the areas and content in the game, as well as access to a solid gear set up to engage in end game content.

I actually love the initial hand holding of starting fresh in RS3. Anybody new to RS is gonna be clueless on what to do after the tutorial. OSRS kinda just drops you in after the tutorial. RS3 will slowly introduce you to the absolute basics of every skill. Completely unnecessary to people that know what to do, but it's less alienating to newbs.

Definitely a problem of the sandbox mmo, I did the intro path later because it prevents progress in a quest, and it's a reasonable intro but still barely scratches the surface. Though the best thing you can do in RuneScape is just start doing something, so if it gets the ball rolling then job done!

ava`s is a permanent unlock to your character now, so no need to wear it, can wear any cape and still have the effects of ava`s

Gonna keep an eye on this series. I adore rs3 and osrs, both definitely have their place. If this gets anyone else to play, I'd just recommend they fiddle with their UI to get something comfy. One of the worst, non-beginner friendly things RS3 has is the UI. There's so many menus and stuff to navigate through i can see it being unbearable.

It's quite rough tbh, the initial layout is quite bad for burying stuff but how does a new player make a better UI without first experiencing the game for a while? Would be great if we could share UIs and release some beginner friendly ones.

It's amazing how quickly they start working once you're in the 90s. Just always top them off and go about your business. Great for something AFK to keep yourself from having to run courses for a year straight

Rules edge case question: if you go to Daemonheim you must do at least *mostly* solo parties, but can you do party runs as required for the aura?

I would put the task in the same camp as BA and allow for grouping only to get any tasks completed that require it. Otherwise solo only. I didn't think about that until now because my only context for the DG tasks was Ironman which has a bunch of them swapped out.

I have just recently started back up about 2 weeks ago from scratch. My biggest struggle is resisting purchasing keys when the grinding gets long 😪

Long grinds can definitely lead to some burnout, I found some success by varying my activities, doing some stuff just for fun even if it doesn't directly contribute to a major goal can be a great refresher.

@KrityaRS yeah defs! I think the game was designed to be played this way, too. feels like things flow better. Have started playing osrs a bit more as of today. It might switch to Ironman for rs3.

I agree, sometimes the grind it long. But the key to RuneScape is level your stats all together for verity. Even if you’re at 90 & you’re pushing for 99. Level others to 90, so many players burn because they go straight to 99-120, or 85-99. Also some days I’ll do a money making skill method to break it up for the grinding. Important to remember there’s plenty of time after max, enjoy the journey. This method has kept me engaged and haven’t burnt out & I play every day for 2 years now.

I’m closing in on 20 years or so I think (or somewhere around there) for my main/only account and I still don’t have a single 99… Whereas a friend who lost her account due to a hacker and Jagex being Jagex, made a new (normal) account and got a 99 within like days or so. I don’t think it was even a week old

it's a lot faster to farm easy clues by pickpocketing h.a.m. members, you might know this but thought i'd mention it.

I knew it was an option, didn't know it was faster though, a lot of my remembered methods are probably outdated by 6+ years!

​@@krityaRS You can also downgrade clues to any tier at the NPC outside of the Grand Exchange. So you don't necessarily have to do methods that give Easy clues.

It might do with how expensive these past 2 expansions have been! But I don't know if that's necessary for every player or just because my guild went for HoF.

There are no "barriers to entry" in any game except ones where you compete directly with other players (great example is SW Battlefront 2) A person's ability to learn a game is solely down to their own mental capacity and learning skills. The issue most people have is they're too used to instant gratification and hand holding in games. My gf had me play WoW for a bit and she was surprised at how I was easily able to do things that most new players would fail or die to. For me, I just play and apply my natural intuition to games and don't worry too much if I don't know everything right away. Then as I come across things that I don't know, I will look into it and slowly add to my repitoire of game knowledge.

yea its so difficult to get to max level (1 day) or to start engame content (the next day) and get enough rating to upgrade everything close to max (2 weeks). really difficult game

A bit confused with the concept and what makes this unique? Essentially you just created a non iron man main?

That's not far off, the tl;dr for it is that I noticed a lack of progression content around mains in RS3, most content is either ironman based or end game/latest update focussed. So when I returned to the game and started relearning it all I decided I would contribute to what I felt was lacking, capturing the experience of progressing in mainscape as a regular player, the thing that makes it unique as far as youtube content goes is that I made the journey as un-youtuber as possible. The rules are mostly there to establish that no boosting/MTX abuse is going to be happening as they would sour the experience imo. I highly doubt the concept will be interesting to everyone, I'm honestly quite shocked by what has happened the past week, but it's something I could only do as my first series starting on KZbin so it's where I'm starting.
