The Bleach anime series adapts Kubo's manga but also introduces several original, self-contained story arcs. In Karakura Town, a 15-year-old high school student Ichigo Kurosaki becomes a substitute Soul Reaper (Shinigami, literally, "Death God") when Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper, cannot fulfill her duties after engaging in battle with a particularly powerful Hollow. Although initially reluctant to accept the heavy responsibility, he begins eliminating Hollows in Rukia's place and during this time discovers that several of his friends and classmates are spiritually aware and have powers of their own.

“Arrancar” is a term for Hollows who’ve removed their masks to gain Soul Reaper powers. This can happen to any Hollow rank from the lowest ones to the Vasto Lorde. It’s very difficult for Hollows to evolve, hence why Vastos are rare, so Aizen has only a few Arrancars who were originally Vasto Lordes.

@@jewelabyss but also if i remeber correctly, there were never vastolordes discovered, also it makes no sense that those arrancars were before "vastolordes", if it's supposed vastos to be even stronger that captains, vastos still look like hollows, with their masks on, but they're just human size, SPOILER. . . .remember when one of grimmjow's fractions told him they wanted to be vastolordes, but they were just adjuchas. And i think the only one who reach a vasto level for a bit was Ichigo with his new form against ulquiorra

This ARC is Spanish Themed. Arrancar means " to rip off or Take off" whic is what the Arrancar do to their mask to gain soul reaper power. Espada meaning Sword. The OST this arc is heavily spanish inspired also etc. Its amazing.

So a Vasto Lorde would still have its mask, but be mostly humanoid. For an Arrancar, you wouldn't be able to tell what type it was before its change except if it was really inhuman even as an Arrancar (in which case, it probably wasn't even a menos)

Vasto Lorde is the highest class of hollow. You don’t see them cause they are very few in numbers and dwell in Hueco Mundo. Arrancar’a are hybrid hollow/shinigami. Aizen created arrancars from normal, mostly likely Adjuchas class hollows with the Hogyuko’s power to break the barrier between hollow and soul reaper thus they become hollow/shinigami. More info will be revealed about this stuff in later episodes.

Bleach has: - Normal Hollows Menos 3 - Gillian (black ones) 2 - Adjuchas 1 - Vasto Lorde ( you havent seen one) All of them can become Arrancars (thanks to the Hokyoku), however, how stronger they were before turning into Arrancar, how strong they will be after. Yammy (big guy) was an Adjuchas before turning into an arrancar but Ulquiorra was a Vasto Lorde, thats why he is so strong. Hitsugaya said that if Aizen reunites 10 Vasto Lordes, Soul Society will be over. Aizen said 20 but it doesn’t mean that they were all Vasto Lorde before turning into an Arrancar. Also the reason we havent seen Vasto Lordes is because they are very very rare you have to devour a lot of hollows to become one.

Well, people have theorized that to evolve from Adjuchas to Vasto Lordes you need to do more than just eat hollows. Grimmjow's fracciones stopped evolving after Adjuchas, regardless of how many hollows they ate. Shawlong thought that it might have been decided by fate as soon as they became hollows if they would become Vasto Lordes. There is also Ulquiorra who seemed to be born a Vasto Lorde. He murdered his whole clan who seemed to be like him (possibly also Vasto Lordes), but fully black and with mouths which they were shown to be using to (most likely) eat each other. His Segunda Etapa was the true form of his clan, and since the form was incredibly strong I have to assume they were strong as well. He then wandered around, not seeing any other hollows, until he found a weird bone tree thing that he felt was the most "nothing" thing that he had ever seen. So being nihilistic and all he wanted to go inside of it just to do nothing because to him nothing is everything, and everything is nothing (I don't feel like explaining his views and ideals and all the "The things reflected in my eyes have no meaning" stuff) and in doing so his mask was torn off and he stayed there doing nothing until Aizen found him. If that is so he was born a Vasto and did not have to eat hollows, hell he didn't even see any hollows before he became an arrancar. There are also significantly more Adjuchas than Vastos. Maybe these Adjuchas didn't have what it takes to become Vastos, even though they ate enough hollows.

However maybe their spiritual pressure had to be very high from the start to become one. All of the Arrancars that are were Vasto Lordes that we know for sure, have a huge spiritual pressure.

2 things about that episode. 1. To answer your question on how they could be stronger than soul reaper, Arrancar, just like Toshiro said are made either with Adjuchas or Vasto Lorde class Menos...At the base, they are very purified version of Menos( won't say how cause it's explained later) and removing their mask purified even more their power and create a zanpakuto...Very pure soul are very powerful. It's the same in some ways with Soul Reaper. 2. The reasons why we haven't seen yet Vasto Lorde is mostly because like other hollow, they feed and prefer pure souls with a lot of power...They don't just come in the real world for fun. We have see an Adjuchas before because of Ichigo...Grand Fisher ! He was there because he felt a tasty soul...Imagine what a captain would attract in the real world ?!?

The vasto lordes, adjuchas, gillians, are levels of menos level hollows. A menos is a huge hollow that is formed from the amalgamation or combination(more accurately devouring-fest) of a massive number of hollows to form one. The menos we saw Ichigo send back to Hueco Mundo in the first arc was a gillian(very common and unintelligent). An Adjuchas is formed when the gillian absorbs more and more hollows until it is powerful enough to morph. These have intelligence, are much smaller than the gillian but much more powerful and they also command the gillian. And at the top of the food chain are the vasto lordes that have human like form and dangerously much more powerful than adjuchas. These are also formed in the same way in that Adjuchas continue devouring hollows so many that it becomes powerful enough to evolve into vasto lordes. The vasto lordes command the adjuchas and the others below. Now these are menos level hollows but are not arrancars. An arrancar is developed when a hollow takes off its mask. Seeing as this is not possible individually, therein lies the purpose of the hogyoku that shatters the boundary between shinigami(soul reaper) and hollow. For a soul reaper to get a hollow mask they would have had to undergo a certain process that shall not be named because its explained in an arc ahead. Because of the "process" thats why visored are complicated. A visored is not just a shinigami who was able to produce a hollow mask and that is due to a certain set of events. Plus also do not categorize Ichigo as a visored because the explanation of the way he is will be done in the Thousand Year Blood War arc. I really do hope that helped. Thanks for the reaction.

We could call the Hollows as a species, within the hollows there are classifications, menos, menos grande, gillian, adjuchas, and vasto lord, these classified from lower to higher rank. An Arrancar is the hybridization of a Hollow and Shinigami power but it is not a species itself. Arrancar means in Spanish "to remove by force", so that's where the explanation comes from that an Arrancar is a hollow that removed his mask, this includes the vast lord, who would be the pinnacle of the hollow species.

Rukia most likely was told by Byakuya who witnessed Ichigo's hollowfication, as if to question her what was that all about. Also Vasto Lordes don't come into play much cause they're exceptionally rare, literally 1 in a million.

Vasto Lorde is STILL a regular type Hollow (Menos) just rare and strong. Arrancar is something else entirely. Any type of Menos can achieve Arrancar stage and look more human. VL look humanlike BEFORE the Arrancar stage the rest don't.

Just help clarify why the arancar are so strong. Hallows have a ranking structure which they explain later in the arc with the the top arancar being high ranking hallows called Adjuchas(think luitenet to low capt level and the top 4 arancar being Vasto Lordes which are high capt to beyond capt level)

The strength of the arancar is explained by the fact that a very long and careful natural selection is necessary for its appearance. it was all explained in Bleach that ordinary stupid Hollows devour each other, further becoming menos. Menos are still stupid Hollows, but if in battles among the Hollows he was a Hollow with a strong will (or mind), then he gains control and continues to evolve by devouring others, and gets the next step as Adyukas. Next comes the Vastelorde, but it is not known exactly how to become one. Grimjow believed that you just need to continue to devour other Adyukas and even just empty ones, and if they bite you, then you will stop in development, but the innate unknown characteristics of the empty ones or luck also play a strong role. We know only 4 vastelords became natural, and naturally only Stark was an arancar, and this is an even rarer situation, Aizen helped everyone else with the help of Haugyoku

One thing to notice at this point in the show is essentially ulqiourras assemsent of ichigo; With ichigo, when hes fighting, when that music starts swelling up, when hes duking it out with a person, and getting the upper hand...he is solid...dam near unshakeable... can block yammys punch like its nothing.... can best, or at the very least, match a captain class soul reaper... But the moment he has internal conflict of any kind, the moment his spirit waivers...he gets his ass beat in...well get wrecked and sent back to the shop.... will struggle, as seen, with fighting a basic ass hollow....

The wiki said that Gillains are lieutenant level Adjuchas are captain and Vasto Lorde are beyond. Now keep in mind these are averages not every lieutenant and captain. I believe Mayuri would be around average captain level and maybe Sanji. Renji is a lieutenant but beyond lieutenant level there could be hollows the same. Just because your not something doesn't mean your not that level. Even if two people are the same rank one has to be stronger than the other same goes for captains and vasto lordes.

11:20 the new faces that the Arrancar gain when the take off their mask isn’t always their original face because of how hollows work. Arrancar are Hollows, specifically Menos, that have removed their masks. To make it simple, a Menos is created when hundreds of hollows fuse together to make a new being, which is a Gillian. From there, it goes to Adjuchas then Vasto Lorde, the rarest type of Menos. A good way to tell the difference between a Vasto Lorde and an Arrancar is that Arrancar have their masks either completely or mostly removed while Vasto Lordes still have their masks. And keep in mind that Bleach has a lot of Buddhist themes in its story so every soul that becomes a hollow isn’t always gonna be a human soul necessarily

i don't know if you guys are ok with recommendations but i'm just going to shoot my shot. I think you guys should check out the anime Oregairu. It's a Romcom/Drama and it's characters are incredibly well written. For Example: the Protagonist of Oregairu (Hikigaya Hachiman) is the 17th most popular character on MAL. This puts him right below Mikasa Ackerman and above characters like Saitama from one punch man, Kakashi from naruto or even Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. The first season starts but it starts to take of hard after by the end of 5th episode. Also, the artstyle and animation of season 1 is a bit weak (season 1 came out early 2013 so it's a bit older) but season 2 changes studios and while the animation only improves a bit the artstyle improves by a lot. Also, 2 of the 3 main characters are voiced by the same voice actors as Loid (Takuya Eguchi) and Yor (Hayami Saori) from Spy x Family. I love this series so much and i enjoy watching peoples first reactions to it (made my roommate watch it and he also liked it) but there is sadly almost no decent reactions of it on youtube.

You missed it but in the Bount filler arc, Renji was assigned to Kurukara town ( the town of the serie) in place of Rukia...so it's not his first time in the real world and the running gag was the he was a freeloader to Kisuke's place !

No they r not any "menos" can become "arrancar" but Vasto lordes r those menos that naturally evolved into human like beings not exactly human but very human like. Arrancars r just sealed into human forms n therefore any menos with the help of hogyoku can become aranacars. That's the reason even among the espada during the canon manga there r only 4 Vasto lordes n if u include the light novel cant fear your own world then one of the "adjuchas" espada becomes a Vasto lorde. This is something that the anime did a poor job of explaining what the "menos" n arrancars actually r n anime only assume that bcoz they r human they r Vasto lorde which they rnt bcoz later on when Rukia fights Espada 9 Arraniero, he himself says that among the arrancars he is the only "Gillian" who was chosen as an Espada which directly implies that any "menos" can become an arrancar but not all arrancars r Vasto lorde.

I saw many explanations, but as far as i know we have seen only 4 Vasto Lordes in the series, 3 for sure. Vasto lords are hollows that have removed the mask on their own, and Aizen has recruited 4 of them, which we will see that they really are stronger then captain level shinigami. Especially the one that we saw.

From Ulquiorra's Past, we see he had a human size before he evolved, so its safe to assume he was a vasto lordes before aizen, and him being espada #4, means than all the espada above him must've have also been vasto lordes before aizen. Especially baragan.
