When my son was a mid teen-ager, he complained that he thought he was sort of abused as a child. He was required to do work around the house and keep up his grades at school. Then I reminded him that he should talk to his friends and ask how many had done the things we had all done together; Went down inside a gold mine; camping in Colorado; camping in Wyoming ; Craters of the moon in Utah; swim in the ocean; chased nudibranchs in Florida. He thought of it a bit and said, 'well maybe it wasn't too bad'......

Raised our kids on a dairy goat farm. We also homeschooled. We joined a homeschooling group that met once a week for “classes” and they were in 4-H until they aged out. We did a lot for them since we live a little more than an hour from DC so they got to go to all the museums etc.. they tell me they loved growing up the way they did. They also did sports of their choice. Yes we were very busy but I wouldn’t have changed it. My 2 girls live on farms and my son is a chef in high end restaurants so I feel blessed they love their lives.

Your conversation about food reminds me of a favorite memory. A group of us who had lived all over the world were discussing what was the strangest thing we ate. I remember someone saying fried tarantulas. I've retired now and no longer living overseas. I miss that lifestyle.

I think it was such a good thing for the young people to dress up and have a nice formal dinner and dance. It is good training to know and feel confident about how to act in formal situations . The girls looked so pretty in their dresses very nice but not over-the-top fancy/expensive.

My husband never had to travel or be away from the home for work, I work in the medical field and I have spent a week away many times and also worked 96 hrs a week. I have worked from home since 2007 because of a work injury. It’s so good to see strong marriages
