I still have my original Mongoose team SX 1995 and my 1996 Cannondale F700, the Mongoose I wouldn't ride; it's hanging on a wall... The F700 I use it as a short distance commuter a couple of times per year it's a wonderful little twitchy bike, still love it... I did buy other old bikes I owned in the past for fun but they are not the originals like my two favorites...

I remember when I switched from cantilever to v-brakes. Game changer!
@BikingRoots5 ай бұрын
Ha right?! I remember that too! That was awesome… Of course there were good ones and bad V brakes as well (just like disc brakes today I guess).

@@BikingRoots for sure. Huge difference from the Tektro v-brakes I started with to the XTRs I eventually switched to.

I had a 1999 GT XCR.5000, loved that bike, but was really high centered. Funny thing is bikes back then in full suspension, most of them weigh less than todays counter parts. I recently sold a 1997 proflex 856( needed the money) and that thing tipped the scales at I think 27 pounds, versus my 2021 Marin Rift zone at 33 pounds.
@BikingRoots9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Oh no way! I remember those old xcr bikes. I also remember pro flex! Yes weights have gone up over the years but at least we have bigger tires, better suspension and brakes, and tougher tires! Yeah you need to spend some good money these days to get in the mid 20s

Those era GTs have great paint jobs. I had a 91 Avalanche in Daktari White, which had black tiger stripes over the white. Coolest looking bike I ever had. The 18" hardtails looked fast standing still.

The problem with the LTS is that when you hit the Rear Brake it wanted to toss Over the Bar's...BRAKE JACK AND THEN SOME. The XCR's.. I-Drive's ACTUALLY SQUATTED. 🙋♂️❤
@BikingRoots9 ай бұрын
Interesting. You are probably right, and I probably never noticed. Luckily I don’t recall any OTB experiences on my LTS. I never had a chance to really ride an I-drive on trails unfortunately to compare but I trust you on that. We’ll see how it rides when I get it going again!
@tomrobinson78799 ай бұрын
Keep it original. It will never ride like a modern bike, plus once you upgrade to modern standards, then its neither old or new, just a mess! Keep the soul in it. V brakes are ok, 3x is great for XC with all that range. The biggest thing you'll miss is a dropper post. A shorter stem helps a lot (Looks like 120 you have on there currently). 80-90 mm is optimal without messing up the reach too much and was available in period. Parts are easy to find and these bikes are simple to work on. Good luck!
@BikingRoots9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions! Yes, I agree with you that it would just be a mess trying to make it somewhat modern, so I’ll keep it original. I may experiment with the shorter stem like you suggested, we shall see. Thanks again for the suggestions and the comment!
