I think your desk might be Mahogany. You might want to look into that, because if you strip it, the wood is pretty red still. You might look for pictures to see if you like it that way. Mahogany furniture was often given that cherry like finish your desk has or it was often black lacquered. You might look up pics of that too. I think you can’t go wrong either way you go ( black or natural) but just check and see if you’d like how it would turn out natural. I’m not sure if you can get other stain shades so easily as other woods if you have a particular stain shade you want in the end.

Awesome job! Have you thought about adding antique brass furniture tacks along the bottom of the chair? It will help secure the fabric for longer use and give it the antique look to match the desk. I refinished a chair like that and an upholstery shop told me to add them. It's been 20 years now and I still have it. Again, GREAT JOB to you, Marcus and your mom.

Yes, I reupholster chairs like that and wing back chairs and full couches for a living. And it’s so funny how people question my rates because they think it’s just easy off easy on so I am so glad you said how hard it is to take off the old fabric in this video so others will get a perspective on how long it actually takes to do it. I think you should restore the desk, there’s a lot of white painted surfaces in the room, and the wood tones of the desk would definitely naturally warm up the room a lot more. I think the warmer wood would also compliment to floors really nice too

I have reupholstered a wing back chair and it took 3 months to complete that task. You were correct when you said sooooo many staples! Hundreds--no THOUSANDS of staples. You all did a great job!

Give sanding and staining a try for the desk first to see how you like it. You could probably match the legs of the chair. I re-upholstered my dining chairs. Loved it! Don't forget the stain guard for that beautiful chair.

I think you should restore the desk. Color choice is it should match with the chair. But I also think the desk being black will make all the light colors (i.e. walls, bench and rug, etc.) pop. Love, love. Love what you are doing.
