Hi Bruce, I thought you might be interested in a bit of a time saver. Instead of using hot water for the first cup on the gelatin. Use cold 🥶 water ( out of the tap ) sprinkle the gelatin on top, then leave for about 6 minutes. During this time, it will swell up. Now you can pour your second cup of hot to boiling water on top. As you stir the mixture with your wisk, the gelatin grains will dissolve, leaving no lumps . I hope you find this helpful. Enjoyed your video 😊. Thanks for sharing.

I had heard complaints about mold before i made my gel plate for art prints using this basic recipe. Some recipes called for alcohol, which will evaporate out. I live in hot & humid Texas, so I put a generous amount of alcohol in. My gel plates are three years old and have no mold.
@jennercustomtoys
@jennercustomtoys 2 ай бұрын
@@G.G.8GG the mold in the stuff I described comes from the water. Once it evaporated you are left with just glycerine and gel. Like I said in the video, if it's left uncovered the moisture can escape and no mold can grow. But like I always say, I'm no expert. I'm just trying to show the Holiday Hobbyist how to save money.

The best instructions I've found for preparing gelatin is to use the proportion of " 2 teaspoons of powder sprinkled into 2 tablespoons(30 milliliters ) cold water . Whisk with a fork and stand for 1 minute. Melt in the microwave for 20 second increments until dissolved." It seems to help to prevent the formation of solid lumps.

I came home from work today and was soon headed out to the shop to check on my first mold casts I poured last night. I'm probably $400 into this resin casting and I easily poured $50 worth of silicone last night. So Today as I am demolding my first casts...your "Reusable Mold Making Compound " started to play on my laptop. Heating resin reduces the working time and speeds up the cure so you may not have the full working time available if you heat it. Also, instead of a cup of hot water, try preheating both parts of the resin before mixing. This has several benefits such as reducing the viscosity so air bubbles dissipate quickly and resin flows easily into detailed molds as well as reducing the curing time. The disadvantages of this would be a shorter working time and with added heat, faster cures make it more susceptible to flash curing and clarity issues. My personal preference is to use a real vacuum chamber (one that can reach at least 28” Hg) to degass the resin, pour into mold and remove any pouring induced bubbles and then put it on a heat pad at 50 C if I want a faster cure, usually to pour a top/base coat. The mold material is interesting. I’ll give it a try when I run out of 2 part silicone and impression putty.

I haven't finished watching yet, but I'm so thrilled to have come across your video and learn about this technique. The cheapest way i knew to make a mold was with clear silicone caulk (to seal windows and sinks), but I've always hesitated to ever do it because i only ever want to work in very small amounts and from my experience, once you cut the end off of the rest in the tube it doesn't store well and dries up within the week and here it's like $7 a tube. But with that, you can use fabric layers to strengthen and you can water down the silicone with mineral spirits (i think that's the one)... but yeah, i just can see when I'm gonna do it. This is so much more up my alley. Re-usable, melts, plenty of work time, isnt as sticky, stinky, or messy. I'm thinking that i could probably sculpt with monster clay and because it's so waxy this would mold my form and easily release.... i did hear you list off a bunch of things that didn't work.. it would be cool to cast plaster, but i can definitely see it sticking because it's like chalk powder and glycerine is basically a sticky sugar (as far as i recall). Also, very good to learn that you can find large jars of glycerine at a drug store (i think you said, will go back through). I needed food grade glycerine once for lollypops or something and it was expensive for a tiny bottle ¹/⁴ the size.. still sitting around with no use (i only used a teaspoon).

Huh.... You do realize that if you grab one of your little shot glasses and put a bit of 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol in it and just suck it up and push it out of the injector a few times it will end up clean? You don't need much of the alcohol and you can just let it evaporate or put it in a small, airtight container to keep using for that purpose until it doesn't work anymore. Doing this will eventually dry out the silicone on the plunger but you should still be able to get 5 to 8 uses out of it depending on the quality of the silicone. No need to scrape and you shouldn't have any clogs. 😆👍🏼 Also, I think using a mini blender (or even a mini electric wisk) would help with the first step of making the mould. Alll the gelatin and 1 cup of water blended should break up all lumps. Pour it out into the bowl and pulse the second cup of water alone in the blender to pick up any residue and then dump it into the gelatin and stir. Afterwards you should have perfectly mixed gelatin with no lumps that should easily mix with the glycerin by hand. The gelatin is made for food so it's perfectly fine to put in a blender and running the plain hot water afterwards in the blender should make cleanup easier and use up all the gelatin. Simple and more efficient to do it that way since there should be no product waste. You can probably even get a cheap blender at a secondhand store or even Walmart just for this purpose if you want to make a ton of this stuff and if you do you can just mix the glycerin in there too. In that case I'd still recommend leaving at least half a cup of the water out to blend in alone and help with getting everything out of the blender. There should be minimal hand mixing and cleanup that way. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@jennercustomtoys You're welcome! Glad I could give you a good tip. 😄 It's easy to forget about using alcohol to clean up after resin sometimes. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Actually, if I were you I'd get some cheap baby wipes too. They make initial cleanup a bit easier than paper towels do. Wipe up resin with the baby wipes first, then use isopropyl alcohol with the paper towels. I'd put the alcohol in a fine mist spray bottle for general cleanup and for popping bubbles at the top of resin. You can use the baby wipes on the syringe first too, to get the worst of the resin off, then use the method I mentioned with the alcohol to clean it out. Rinsing the alcohol off with water after cleaning might keep the silicone from drying out too quickly too since it would remove the alcohol. Just set it out to dry with the plunger out afterwards and you'll be set to use it again as soon as it's dry. If you're just cleaning it out in between different colors of resin though, don't bother with the water, just wipe off the excess alcohol with a paper towel. How goes your Christmas light bulb collection? Have enough yet? Or are you looking to sell them online for people who might be looking for them? 🤔
