Instead of 'a rising tide lifts all boats', America says 'let's subsidize yachts!' ...and blames people who drown for not having 'innate knowledge' of how to build a boat, or even if they do have the knowledge, blame them for not having the tools to be able to do so. 👏👏👏 to Barber!!! The Poor People's Campaign was abandoned/removed from the Civil Rights Act due to politicians' refusals. As a social worker, I tell people that White America are the poorest and highest users of government aid. The fact that they racialized poverty to keep poor White America in cholehold. They continue vote against their own interesr for social capital. That is the voting block that needs to be empowered and educated the most for real change to happen. Poor Native, Black, Hispanic, and other communities aren't enough of the voting block, despite voting for their interest, to cause a dent. The federal poverty line is a joke. I've helped so many of my zero income clients transition to stability BUT, they are no part of the working poor. Don't qualify for any supports...they were given more help when homeless/zero income and cannot beat the system. It's a tragedy and hard for me to hold on to hope for them. Our policies and laws are not for the people and siphon the working class for all their earnings.

@lizliz41867 ай бұрын
Not anymore. Both Trump and Biden are appealing to and saying working class. The challenge is that the working class typically doesn't vote (or donate millions) so there's no reason to help them. At the end of the day they help those who actually vote. Everyone needs to vote. Staying home doesn't make a point, it only gives your view away for free.

Granted, the cost of pretty much everything is more expensive, but that is no wages

I'm so grateful that someone has brought up this topic at all. No, it's never discussed on or in political platforms. I'm in MS. The entire state lives in poverty it seems except for the few. I'm a music director and a housekeeper. My wages for the year last year were around 13,000. Yet folks are surprised when bills go unpaid, car repairs and upkeep undone. This year power and food have been at war and it's really hot, so the power bill won of course. I had someone close to me say recently that "noone (gvt) owes you anything". That was over my lifeline phone, and it was family saying it. Sigh.

I absolutely LOVE that this man wrote this book because this has been a huge issue for a while that is growing. The rich want the poor to fight each other because otherwise they might be able to organize successfully and change things. I have no hope for civilization, but poor folks shouldn't be fighting each other.

The wealth gap is getting bigger and bigger in this country everyday. Addressing it will not just benefit the very, very poor but will also help those of us in the so-called middle class who are finding it more and more difficult to make ends meet. The situation is inexcusable in a country that possesses so much wealth.

And that would virtually guarantee that no one who is not already rich could afford to hold national office. It costs far too much to live a middle class existence in Washington DC for anyone who is not already wealthy to accept an electoral position there that does not pay sufficient to live there. Do you really want to guarantees that the only people who could ever afford to be elected to government are those who are already rich? The cost of living in Washington DC is estimated at 50% higher than the national average. The cost of housing is 140% higher. That means you will be covering the entire cost of living in one of the five most expensive cities in the United States out of your existing wealth; your congressional income would not even cover childcare for one kid. Literally everything else is coming out of your savings and investments. The people who can do that may not have the interest of the common man at heart.

@williamgechtman92877 ай бұрын
@@DawnDavidson the point is, they don't *need* that salary *at all.* Why would paying them nothing make a difference?The people who are in the Senate would be there if it paid literally nothing. They don't *need* the money, they need the ability to shape *policy* to *benefit* those who already have wealth, such as themselves It is worth their while to do the job for *free,* as it will pay off for them in the long run, as it will not for most people of the nation. Their "salary" is irrelevant. Raising the minimum wage might *cost* them money personally. They may well already own businesses that profit from paying employees the least amount of money they can. Raising the minimum wage would provide those senators a pittance at best, while potentially costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional wages paid to their employees. Why would they raise that minimum wage?

Well said Rev Barber and thanks Jon for having him as a guest. In the UK minimum wage is £11.44 or US$14.30 per hour. People cannot live on that. One fifth of the UK population lives in poverty.
