She did already do symphonic metal before Revamp though in her first band After Forever 🙂
@billattercliffe86553 жыл бұрын
She formed ReVamp in 2009 as her child. She had creative control, produced the song ideas, wrote lyrics and melodies, managed the band and so on. ReVamp went from 2009 to 2016, which is almost a four year overlap with Nightwish (starting October 2012). She toured with ReVamp after becoming the official lead singer of Nightwish. She actually met her future husband (Hannes van Dahl of Sabaton) while touring as a support band with Sabaton for Iced Earth after she was already a member of Nightwish. The funny part is that Hannes knew nothing about Nightwish, but the Sabaton guitarist was a serious Nightwish fan so he was freaking out that they were sharing the tour with the Nightwish singer while Hannes is like, "Who?" This is just a crappy fancam video of ReVamp, but it does give us a better idea of how Floor can swing from a deep growl to opera in the span of a single note, "Misery's No Crime" kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX-zlqaCe7mhi8k. I particularly like her leopard snarl at 0:38 and the reaction from the guitarist. He knows what's coming, but he still can't help but recoil. Nightwish kind of resurrected Floor - she had a burn-out and with ReVamp she was doing everything (booking, arrangement, lyrics, etc.) When she came to Nightwish, they needed her, yes, but they also restored her and gave her, her confidence back... Floor herself says she was an angry person in ReVamp, but that she is not the person anymore. Nevertheless, she did great things with ReVamp and also with her very first band "After Forever".

Back in the days, Revamp was touring with Nightwish and Tuomas knew what she could with her voice. When their singer became ill in the middle of a USA tour, there was no doubt in his mind that she could do what was needed. So she was called and jumped on a plane. NW toured with After Forever, Floor's first band back in 2002(?), but never with Revamp. After Tarja they needed a new singer but didn't want to break an existing band, so they never asked Floor at that point. After Forever disbanded 2009 and Floor started Revamp from scratch but eventually got a burnout from doing too much trying to focus not only on Revamp but also her dayjob. She was still recovering from the burnout when she was asked to fill in Anette, NW singer at that point, for the end of their world tour. Obviously I can't say for sure what was the motivation for them to ask Floor, but she was available and they knew she was capable to do it. Why Floor agreed to join them? Nobody than herself knows it for sure, but after severe burnout it must had felt relieving to step back from being the primus motor of Revamp and focus only for the vocals. And actually make her living doing that.

I'm somewhat disappointed that Revamp was unable to continue due to Floor being scooped up by Nightwish. This was Floor's band, she wrote all the lyrics and melody lines. I personally think the best example of her growl is in the third verse(I think) of the title song from the 2nd album Wildcard. There are only crappy vids of her doing it live, though some clever chap dubbed in the studio track on to some live footage and that worked pretty well. This Graspop performance is the only(halfway) decent live footage, at least that I've been able to find. with Disdain she is in her beginning growl really. She talks about being intimidated by growling until her friend advised her on who to learn from. There is an interesting vid of her making a guest appearance with Soilwork called Let This River Flow. She does a growling duet with the lead, but they're voices are almost the same it seems like and he has the bigger voice so it's a little difficult to hear her. Still, it's a pretty cool cut. Thanks for this reaction, I subbed because of it.

@@Killermcknight A couple more tidbits on this concert. This was an noon opening set. At the start very few are engaging. Revamp was not that well known. By the end the entire crowd is involved. The whole set is worth listening to. There are some mike issues during the first 2-1/2 songs. The crew seemed oblivious...oh well.
@billattercliffe86553 жыл бұрын
@@Killermcknight About the Soilwork appearance. Being the guest, Floor is not going to sing over the lead, plus her mic might be cut back a tad. She is capable of growling very loudly (e.g. the ending of some of the "Yours is an Empty Hope" performances), but in this Soilwork song, we don't hear her well. The key is though, she's down at the same C2/D2 level as Björn.

Hi Killer, Floor was about 29/30 years old in 2010! She played with After Forever from 16 years old for 12 years until they disbanded which broke her heart as she loved this band and they were about to make it to the top. Also around this time she broke up with her partner, also with After Forever, who actually broke up with her as he started seeing her best friend behind her back, which also broke her heart. I won't mention their names but you can Google it easy enough. I'm only saying all this as, when you hear the lyrics of the songs she sang at this venue with ReVamp it's obvious she felt betrayed. The point is the she went on to form ReVamp and they were very good!! There is a full 41 minute version of this set on KZbin which is great. It starts with a broken mic during the first 2 songs and not many fans but, and by the end there are thousands watching her and shouting for more which she felt really good about. She makes a couple of small speechs during the set which are heatwarming (which I thought were both sad and happy) and brought a tear to my eyes!! I have this 41 minute set on my playlist but I don't know how to give you the KZbin address to send to you. If you want I can give you the reactors name so you can check it out. I think you will really enjoy watching the whole set and not just the one song. Take care Ronnie

The songs of Revamp deal mostly with (bad) relationships and the bad breakup of her first band After Forever certainly has brought on this 'angry' Floor. Afer Forever was also a Symphonic Metal Band and in 2001/2002 toured through Europe together with Nightwish. In that time Floor and Tarja became good friends and still are. Maybe Tuomas considered asking Floor already after Tarja left in 2005. After 'After Forever'disbanded, Floor started Revamp from scratch in 2009 and did run the band practically on her own. As she also did a lot of vocal coaching, Floor paid the price and got a serious burnout. She just had recovered when the call came from Nightwish to fill in for Annette october 2012. She performed a couple years with Revamp also, but in 2016 it was clear she could not do both anymore, so Revamp disbanded. Here is a link to a song (Misery's no Crime) where Floor takes growling to a next level, even compared to the better known 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card': kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX-zlqaCe7mhi8k

@@Killermcknight One of the complications about the demise of After Forever - Sander Gommans started After Forever with Mark Jansen (no relation) and Sander became Floor's live-in boyfriend. When AF broke up, she not only lost her band, she lost her man as well. Sander married Amanda Sommerville, who I believe had worked and/or was a friend of Floor's. I'm not good at the gossip thing so perhaps someone else can fill in the details. When we listen to the lyrics of both ReVamp and Northward, there's a lot of anger in Floor's song writing and performances. Check out "While Live Died" kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHLMgZiJqNZ3Y5Y to see another side of Floor - an 80's hard rock version. This song was written about the time of the breakup of AF, but released about a decade later.

Floor’s first band After Forever was more Nightwish-like, though they did have male growling combined with Floor’s singing which, again, was more in line with what she does in Nightwish. reVamp was completely her own thing, but she got burn out trying to handle it all herself and her health suffered a great deal as a result.
