The American Embassy was about 3 miles away. It averaged 96 decibels inside the Embassy. 120,000 people went to hospitals the next day for hearing loss. No alcohol was sold but people could bring whatever they wanted. Pantera fired up the drunk crowd right from the start and the military started beating people. Then the crowd started a rain if glass bottles onto the soldiers. By the time Metallica took the stage, opening for AC/DC, the violence was over and many soldiers were partying with the crowd. The helicopters were forcing air into the crowd to cool them down and supply oxygen. 3 months later the USSR collapsed.

@MikeSparkman, GTFOH, who told you that babbling BS my friend? And how could you be so naive to believe such a silly thing like that? IDGAS who, what, when or where you heard this from but they're FOS & lied to you. I've been to some of the loudest concerts ever back in the day from KISS to Manowar, Motorhead to Maiden, etc... & there's NO way in hell Metallica or any other band for that matter could be that loud in concert. The American embassy could have been 3 doors down much less "3 MILES" away with every single window in the building completely wide open. And the people working in the embassy still would have never had 96dbs of sound ringing in their ears. No way, Jose! There's a good possibility that Metallica could have injured people's eardrums if they were playing inside the American embassy. But it's impossible for any band to be that loud to injure someone's ears playing live at an outdoor concert from 3 MILES away. Just saying... Let's keep it a buck, ya dig? +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ 🤘😜🤘

As someone pointed out on another very reaction to video, so I'm not taking credit for the idea, this concert took place as Metallica was literally in the process of becoming the most popular rock/heavy rock band in the world. Their album was climbing up the charts in the USA as they were touring Europe at this time so, ACDC were the "headliners", this was the last tour they ever did as an "opening act". So we're literally watching 1.6 million, or 350,000 people, whatever it is, rocking out to a band as they literally hitting the pinnacle of international fame and stardom. Pretty cool stuff.

This was epic because of the crowd, the music, and the political ramifications. Some interesting notes... the people at the back were over a mile and a half from the stage, the helicopters were actually using their rotors to push fresh air down into the crowd because people were passing out. They only expected 250,000 to show and don't know how many are actually there because they lost count at around the million mark. Dark side.. approx. 45 people died, some from a mosh pit that formed because the military thought it was a fight and tried to break it up which went badly. Today looking at it, all I can think of are bathrooms.

Yes 1.6 million people attended and they had to have the military do the security and that is why you see the military helicopter at the beginning of the video. It wasn't the first. The Moscow Peace festival on 12th and 13th of August 1989 had Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Skid Row, Scorpions, Motley Crue and Ozzy Osbourne. That was the USSR and Russia's first major concession to western music being allowed. It is important to note The Berlin Wall was still up when this happened. it didn't come down until November that year Iron Maiden had earlier in 84 had played dates in Poland, Hungary, and Yugoslavia when they were still part of the Eastern Soviet Bloc. But playing in Russia never mind Moscow itself was still unthinkable then

Now, if you want to talk about big fans, well that was exactly what those helicopters were there for... To move the air so people would have air to breathe. The concert was happened after the Soviet Union collapsed, styudents were revolting. In their negotiation to return to peace they asked for a free rock concert. It was AC/DC, Metallica, Pantera and a couple other bands. The uniformed people are Russian Soldiers. I would suggest Creeping Death from this concert next.

Sorry to double post - rude, I know. But you saying you were born in '91, and listing your mums favourite bands... REALLY made me feel old. Born in '74 and could never grow a beard like that, and not only was I totally into all of those bands, I can play most on guitar and bass - a little piano. Met most and been interviewed in magazines and tv - back when they were a thing.... Even if you don't play guitar.... borrow one and learn "Youth Gone Wild" by Skid Row... really, really fun to play and excellent at pub gigs.... Oh - and the helicopters.... lots of differing views on those.... SOME say they were spraying the crowd with cold water to reduce illness / injury. Some say they were simply filming for TV etc. And... of course - some say they were government camera units to spot "agitators" and so on. Given recent actions the last one could have been true, but this was '91. Much more likely to be the first one.

Remember that Metallica had been around for most of a decade already by 1991... but yeah, it is extra amusing to see them have an obvious following of fans behind the iron curtain in the U.S.S.R. Technically, nobody in the crowd should have had access to their music... but we know how that goes. ;-) The U.S.S.R. fell not long after this concert, btw.

It still cracks me up how Kirk runs around the stage like a kid in the candy store😂 Kirk, Hammett, Riff lord and shredding savior. Jason Newstead bass demon. James Hetfield, rhythm, guitar, vocals and cowardly lion impressionist. Lars Ulrich, tiny brooding, cheesy danish, drummer, and Napster opponent.😂

If you like bands like those 80s bands ... I want you to see something amazing. Versailles Faith and Decision live with English Subtitles. Note these are all guys just in costumes. They are Visual Kei, which is the Japanese equivalent of Punk and Hair bands but amped up to 1000.

NO! The Bassist for Metallica was Ron McGovney. Mustaine, yes with an E, was the Lead guitarist but didn't appear on any albums. Mustaine toured with the band and co-wrote four songs from Kill 'Em All & 2 from Ride the Lightning. McGovney basically left the band due to Mustaine's antics and unruly additions with alcohol & drugs.
