@@BobbyTucker Up to a point, you're undoubtedly right about cheaper Chevy engines. I have to disagree about the "same power" end of it, though. If you want the same power out of an LS as an equally well part matched and put together Cleveland headed Ford, I'd bet the LS will end up costing considerably more to be competitive on power levels. Any time a really good builder used a Cleveland headed Ford in that EMC thing, they won, not LS entries. For the person who wants to run an engine straight out of the junkyard and have a durable engine with decent power, the LS doesn't have a whole lot of competition.

What an amazing car, that spark advance/retard lever is really unique and old school. My buddy had a 73 Maverick, we junked the straight 6 and slid in a HO302 w/ a 5-speed from an old, wrecked fox body. That car was an absolute blast with just basic bolt on's for the time- Edelbrock intake manifold, Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, MSD Ignition ect... one time it was myself, my buddy and another guy, we went to the gas station and the other guy grabbed a 6 pack. My buddy asked him not to open any until we got back home. I was in the back mind you. He aptly said "No" and cracked one and proceeded to start chugging. My buddy slams the car into 1st and floors it through the parking lot, squealing tires and slides out into the road grabbing 2nd. The car slides off the road and we nearly hit a telephone pole. At the same time the guy in the passenger seat proceeded to dump his beer all down his face and shirt, while screaming WTF! My buddy was laughing so hard I thought he was going to need oxygen! The other guy didn't find it so humorous at all and left when we got back, and never came back over. Ah the good old days!😁

I've always felt that Ford's performance engines were just a cut above the rest, their R&D department just did such an incredible job back then, and ever today they're still doing it. Even though, I'm a die hard Ford loyalist, GM built some sweet ones back then as well. A good example is a 69/70 Nova with a 396, or a 70 Chevelle, two gorgeous cars that could certainly hold their own.

In Mexico and Brazil they actually did got special models in their mavericks, they get a GT option that actually came with performance parts unlike the faux grabber models we got. They had 4 barrels and dual exhaust, which we never got in the states. They also got Dana 44s as an option. We only got the 8”, but honestly those are great if you’re not making an excess of 500HP.

The paint job is different than the color picture of Dyno Don’s Maverick on back cover of Drag Sport Illustrators pictorial of 1970 ProStock season. This car has white striping around orange side panel with white hood scoop while the pictured one from the book has gold background behind a red side panel with black hood scoop. The pictures in book of the initial ProStock season of 1970 seem to show this different paint scheme (the hood is a good telltale for paint scheme in b&w photos). Has to be same car but it must have been repainted at some point. …I did a little interweb searching after posting message above. The paint as seen now looks to be the 1971 paint scheme so car must have been repainted between 1970 and 1971 seasons. Doesn’t take anything away from car, just adds to the understanding of its history. What a gem.

I saw Don win the Summernationals at Englishtown on July 18, 1971. It was a VERY hot day. A generation-older first cousin's husband took their son and me to our first drag races that day. After the races were over, we got stuck in completely stopped traffic directly behind Dyno Don. We were all out of our cars, and Don talked to us and gave us 8x10 glossy photos of the car, signed. For a couple of years after that, we both subscribed to Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine, largely to follow what Don was up to. I had my family's old '66 Fury VIP to myself in high school, but in college my first car, bought in 1976, was a 'red 70 Maverick with 3 speed manual on the tree and the middle of the three available straight 6 engines, the 200ci. Talk about a car with zero traction in winter, there was basically no weight in the rear. A cousin had a 302 '73 Maverick she bought new, lime green with white vinyl roof. The view of the hood out the windshield of the Maverick was like that of a sports car.

Too bad Ford didn’t put the engine into any car from the factory. All they had to do was make a mere 50 cars of any body style like they did with the 64 Thunderbolts or like what Mopar did with the 1968 Darts and Barracudas and let Hurst build them. But nooo they instead backed the most overrated car engine of the time the Boss 429 that would get spanked by mopar 340’s Chevy 350’s even their own Boss 351. So the NHRA & NASCAR correctly ruled the motor as an experimental crate engine and not a production engine thus making it illegal for class racing though it could still be used for bracket racing but that’s it. I’d rather have a motor that parts are available for without having to need to know someone that knows someone that might have some parts, so I’ll take the Hemi but the 427 S.O.H.C. was quite the engineering piece minus the football field long timing chain though I think a gear drive was developed for it.

The valve cover breathers and plug wires and I will check my pix but I think the Dominators were the early ones with taller choke tubes. It also used Firestone Drag 500's. As far as I was told the car was brought back to California by Dondero and I saw it displayed in Bakersfield at the Hot Rod Reunion as it was when found.

Jobs were plentiful back then and anyone with a good work ethic and a mind for innovation and design could make a good life for themselves.
