Instead they die in hospital, not for any good reason, but because the hospital cannot discharge them - because there is no support in the community.
The problems in social care block up hospitals in England denying many the hospital treatment they deserve and others the deaths they might hope for.

Yeah . maybe try paying care workers a decent wage for the job they do ! My daughter is a care worker and she gets minimum wage , these people need the respect they are due for the job they do . Would you sign up for being abused , lashed out at or even bitten for minimum wage ? I know these people dont know what they are doing but this is what she goes through every day.

As a home carer, i feel we are not respected, well underpaid, and overworked with little support. Until this is addressed, you will see carers leaving this field. They cannot retain staff because the do not value their workers. This means a massive knock on effect to service users In hospital. The govt and councils need to invest in staff. Such a shame for those poor people

You are very valued by the people that you look after The problem is social care has been defunded by all councils and governments … I’m 70 and been disabled from age 13 …. But the last 10 years need a little help at home .. the council paid for it for 5 years then it stopped now I have to pay privately but I can only afford 3 hours a week …when I really need at least 8 …. I don’t use care company’s as they charge around £20-£25 per hours but I know that carers only get around £10 of that …

The thing is, also, that a lot of bad nurses bully good nurses, and they also watch as patients are bullied, so they ended up quitting out of frustration. I was a patient in a long-term care home not even 1 month ago, so I actually saw this happen myself. I've also seen nurses quitting their jobs after watching patients be bullied for not complying with C-19 rules. I also have seen bad nurses giving people a different level of medical care based on their income (for example: in the care home that I lived in not even 1 month ago, I wasn't even allowed to shower or wear clothes that weren't hospital gowns because my ward was experiencing a C-19 lockdown. But my neighbor, who's rich (I'm not) got to go shopping. (Don't worry, my Dad threatened to sue them, and one of the nurses got fired).

@julialane6645 As a person who lives in a country with socialized medical care (Canada) and have also visited countries without it (The United States): actually, I prefer socialized medicine. I was in a coma at one point from brain damage, and I would probably be dead if I lived in a country where they wouldn't treat me unless I paid for it. I also have a medical condition that requires medication (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis), and again, I probably wouldn't be able to afford the medication for it if I didn't live in a country with socialized heath care. Edit: these are just my own personal examples, but there are many others that you can find online.

This is crazy. In America, they toss you out of the hospital asap. Often there is zero help other than-here are instructions, call us or go to the ER if you have problems. Take your meds, see your doctor in a couple weeks, good luck! Many times, discharge begins at 9 am. Patient calls you in, I’m going home, and you sit till 5 pm, getting more irritated noticing your loved one isn’t able to actually care for themselves. Mom healed at home over a few months, but it was exhausting. Our system is broken too. Just the other way.

This is why Homecare nursing needs to increase. I am a Homecare nurse and there is so much need for skilled nurses within Homecare. Most nurses do not like Homecare because you are going into other peoples homes and you really do not know what you are walking into and they are all 8 hrs days shifts some nurses like the 12hr shifts. Also, Homecare Nursing pays less then facility nursing and for most health authority the nurse needs to use her own vehicle. There is such a huge need for Homecare nurses.

This is what I have been saying for years, they need to up the wages for the nurses, their job is more intense than those who work in the hospital, once they rethink how the home care works, only then will they have a system that will work. Its not just nursing that is needed, there is a need for house keepers and gardeners as so many have gardens attached to their homes. Both workers do not need to be there every day as you can only clean so much in a day. Gardning is really a weekly thing, house keeping at least 2-3 times a week. In most cases there is no need for a nurse, just house keeping and Gardning. If a nurse is needed for meds then they only need to pop in at the times needed for that I setup my phone calendar to page me when it’s time to take my meds, I cook once a week making a stew and placing into meal size containers.

It isn’t much better here in the US. I do respite and habilitation care for kids with developmental disabilities. I don’t even have to dispense medication but I get paid more than an actual home health nurse does.

Perhaps this gentleman cannot walk or needs care at home. It’s a terrible situation to need to leave hospital and not have good carers available to properly and professionally care for you at home. We need better rehabilitation services and to bring in a National Care Service into the higher standards of the NHS in terms of training, supporting and paying care staff- who are effectively tasked to do the job of community nurses with much more unwell patients at home than 20 years ago.

Delays in discharge can be caused by delays arranging for home modifications/ equipment and home care assistants to come in for say 30 mins every day or a few times a week to help with household tasks/washing/dressing/ getting out of bed. While the patient remains in hospital, their muscles deteriorate, strength, balance, co-ordination decline, they lose capacity to do tasks for themselves and become institutionalised. There is a shortage of home care staff which is poorly paid. Home care packages are under resourced. It costs less money to keep people at home than in nursing and care homes or hospital.

In my home country (Eastern Europe) there are no provisions for the elderly, carers are a rare thing and almost never provided from the gov. The whole family cares for elderly family members, I spent time in my teenage years going to school and providing care after (tending to bed sores etc), a woman was hired to help throughout the day while my parents were at work. It’s not easy, but it’s strange for families to be there and not try to pull together their community to get the grandparents back at home. I’ve seen the pain of leaving them at a hospice, it’s absolutely devastating - they lose their minds, they are scared and lonely, crying in pain… We couldn’t do this… Not everyone has family members, but for those who do.. it’s heartbreaking that some people have become so complacent they see it more as a responsibility of the government than their own, also planning is not always done on time or possible earlier… 😢

I used to think the same before I became a nurse and got a job at the hospital, but usually the patients who are stuck in hospital are dementia patients who have very challenging behaviour, they are not suitable to be looked after by family at home. The man in this video is definitely not the typical patient who is waiting to go home.

My husband and I are early 60s. I'm scared because we have no family to care for us in the USA and we will wind up in a nursing home which are horribly neglectful and drug patients so they don't have to be bothered with them. They smell like urine and feces. They are at times beaten or even raped by staff. And laughed at and made fun of. We live in Texas and it is the worst state for these nursing homes. If you can't shell out over 6,500 per month on top of what social security Medicare pays, which will get you in a decent ( mostly ) nursing home ,then you are left to the bad bad places. Im truly frightened. Our home needs repairs and changes if we were to be able to get around in a wheel chair or scooter. We both have bad backs and hips and knees from arthritis and our hands and elbows are starting. If you are a Christian, please pray for our future or tge rapture and for us to be counted worthy.

If you can downsize now, rent out a room or your driveway to a single mom or handyman..get some life back into you…join your senior club or get to know some neighbors…there are a lot of lonely people out there that may come check on you if you offer supper or homemade goods….churches have programs for checking on seniors…look for community groups or charities…do something now to increase your friend group…you’ll be okay programs are out there 👀🇺🇸🕊

Social care provision has always been brushed under the carpet - it’s been talked about for at least 40 years. Years ago there used to be convalescent homes - a half way house to home, helping people to start looking after themselves. No one wants to rot in hospital till they die.

My grandmother and my great auntie were left in hospital for months because they couldn't sort out at-home care. In this time they both lost tonnes of weight and lost all mobility from being stuck in bed all day. They were both on noisy wards where they didn't sleep, which only accelerated their decline. My grandmother died within a week of getting home. She was under 5 stone when she passed. My great auntie is going the same way. All because she went into hospital with a perfectly cureable lung infection. They were both fit and healthy women in their seventies until they went into hospital, but came out looking like skeletons who couldn't walk. How is any of this humane?

Shortage of places in convalescence nursing homes for shorter recovery stays. Hard to recruit and retain home care staff to assist patients who need support at home. Home care packages for home help/ modifications are under-resourced even though it saves state extra cost of keeping such patients in hospital or longer stay care homes.

Our society is b*ggered. The most important jobs for the betterment of our society are not valued at all. Carers, nurses, healthcare workers etc are all paid peanuts and when they ask for help their plight is ignored. We need to prioritise the careers that we need and pay them their worth.

My grandma was stuck in a hospital as well. We(my family + relatives) ended paying a little over £2000 per month to put her in a care home. It’s not even a luxury one, just a small room. My mum visits her almost every single day but due to medical needs she has to be in a care home.

I'm a healthy 78-year-old, illegally evicted from my farm 3 years ago, now living in sheltered accommodation I don't need. My health is deteriorating, going from a farm where I looked after sheep, poultry, and a herd of dairy goats to sitting in a chair all day is weakening my body. Not even a garden to look after and no dog to walk. I'm starting to suffer with blood circulation in my lags, my muscles are wasting, I have nowhere to exercise. Furthermore, I'm taking up a flat that that is needed by people who are stuck in hospital. I will have to go to a gym to preserve my health. My father was a professional athlete, I've always been active in sports and athletics. I anticipate living to 95 +, if I can get out of here.

Individualism took over Great Britain quite aggressively starting from the late 90's when it was all bout looking out for yourself, just so you could get your new car, your house and holidays and NOTHING else mattered. We lost the community spirit and family values and breakdown. Everyone wanted to be a celebrity or have a celebrity lifestyle. Of course, there are many other factors like addiction, failed education, lost souls who thrown on the scrap heap etc etc, but the family dynamic was destroyed

My 90 year old with dementia was sent to hospital from a care home because she became angry. They did not wait for the mental health team, mum has been there since the 21sr of April 2023, the ward now its second sickness bug and we cannot visit. She is slowly declining. There are no places in any care homes in our area, it is heartbreaking 😢

My dad died because of no home care. He went home and sat and laid in bed and didn't do what they had advised. No home care to push him to get up and move. If someone doesn't want to move around and improve themselves, then it's on them. Let them go home and spend their last days with family.

I'm 72 now and, ten years ago, I had a complete knee replacement operation. After three days of neglect by the nursing staff (I was severely dehydrated because I couldn't even get a nurse to fetch water for me, and I had to fight to get my dressings changed), I discharged myself on the fourth day. I swore I'd never go back to that hospital again, even if I was dying. _I wisely chose to refuse the trial drug (aka the C19 "vaccine") when my GP tried to coax me into having it_

This is showing people actually having a bed just left hospital(North West of Enland) Large Hospital A&E looks like a war Zone i waited 39 hour only in a chair for first one of the many trolly beds ALL OVER THE CORRIDORS then waited 1 hour more for a bed on ward. 6:16 some people told me the longest wait was 72 hours. I felt sicker with the sleep deprivation.

Unless they don't have any children... where are the family to take care of them ? My grandmother lived with us till her last days 95yo. It was a win win situation as my parents could work all day and she will be the one welcoming us at home after school with crêpes, marbré. And we will keep her physically active by talking to her about our day at school, listening to her stories, playing cards, board games etc. And I have only lovely memories ! With my parents salary and grandmother's pension we could offer a nice home to live togethers. When I was young I thought that home care were only for old people without family or needing heavy care 24h/7. But it rarely comes to that point when they are given good physical and mental care through family members. That is so sad😢

Or they could live with their family -who end up neglecting the vulnerable patient - despite the adult child (now with their own family) is living today on earth due to the patient (the vulnerable grandparent/parent) It’s sad that we can’t give back to our elders when they most need us

This has been a problem for years. Home carers are paid very poorly and expected to travel distances between homes for which they are not paid. The jobs often require evening and weekend hours. Insurance companies/government don’t want to pay for care homes unless you’re in imminent danger of death. Care homes are poorly reimbursed by the government. It’s a matter of nobody wanting to pay for care.

If you have a relative who cannot be safely left alone for any amount of time then how could you support both them and yourself without being able to work? If you take them into your home and quit your job to become their full time then you will both starve and end up homeless. How is that helping them? Also, it’s not only elderly people who may need care. You may have a younger person become disabled and their only family are elderly parents who are not in good enough health to provide care

They have been trying to get healthcare and social services in tandem even before 1994. This has always been an issue. There has always been under funding, poor staffing, inadequate training, skill mix issues coupled with diminishing community services to facilitate hospital discharge. The NHS has been progressively under funded for a long time. more attention is paid to managers than clinicians. Each manager believing that the NHS can be run like your local Tesco.

My father had bladder surgery, and bc of the length of his stay, he couldn't walk on his own. His muscles had to be re-taught to move, so he had to go to a nursing home to rehab for a few weeks. This was in America, but I understand how these ppl are getting left behind with the medical system breakdown.

What is never mentioned home care has to be paid for and that charges can be considerable you are only left with £ 169.00 a week. Yet again it comes down to the government not funding the system. It is cheaper to treat people at home ,so fund it !!.

Hospitals in Gadsden Al discharges people that they shouldn't. My grandma was sent home when they couldn't find what was wrong. Another hospital out of town took xrays & found out the problem in one day!

I know families in Eastern Europe who take care of their elderly parents. Sometimes if they cannot look after they pay privately other people to look after them for a few hours while they are at work. Here in UK 🇬🇧 no body takes responsibility for their parents and leave them in hospital for months. Very bad, no compassion 😞

I'm now a carer for my Mum. I've halved my salary and am clinging onto my job that I've made huge sacrifices for by a thread. I get no carers allowance. Respite is almost impossible to arrange. I haven't left my Mum for more than an hour and a half since early March. I'm single and in my early forties. I have no other family in this country to share the load. This is my life for the foreseeable future and if I lose my job, I'm on my own on the scrapheap. Sounds good, eh?

@@rachelm1816Get in touch with your local authority. There are carer charities and associations that the council know about that can put you in touch and in the know about things like respite. Also you will get good advice on all things to do with caring for your mother. Do it now. Also tell your GP. They need to know what is going on with you - they sometimes have groups that can help you.

I didn’t understand how that elderly man said he has family at home but he still can’t go home! My mum was in hospital for a serious operation and she came home under my care. I looked after her until she was better and more able to look after herself. Why are people letting their parents/relatives deteriorate in hospital when they are declared fir enough to go home? Most of them can look after themselves after a period of convalescence.

I ‘AMA’d’ (left against medical advice) as I had been there a month with a broken hip/revised broken hip - they wanted me to have an electric hospital bed, commode, arm chair and hoist delivered so I could live in one room for months. I was fit and active before going into hospital, now I struggle if I have to go out for an hour. Last year I had care organised to help when I came out of hospital and when they got there I asked them for help to rinse out a mug so I could warm up some tinned soup (I couldn’t get to the sink) I was told by the carer it was a meal service, not a cleaning service - I said I don’t have anything clean to cook with - they said I should have frozen meals that you put in the microwave as they only had about ten minutes to help get food. I had to have some crisps and a biscuit instead.

The Hospital needs to be able to bill local council Social Care services for bed blockers. Until they have to pay for not sorting out their part of the system, they have no incentive to fix the blockages in the system.

We in sheltered housing can't do much it's the different teams that the client and family has to deal with unfortunately upon discharge everything should be already in place bit the system pushes vulnerable people outa hospital it's all bout numbers

Unfortunately sometimes peoples relatives want to visit but dont want the hassle of helping their own to do the basics. Other families work so hard and throughout will work together to do something to help the frail and elderly.

Families live farther away from each other so the work may fall to one family member. Families often need some small amount of regular rather than infrequent support, to make it easier to cope with the workload.

This is ridiculous, they have home health, at home nurses in America. What’s the scoop in the UK? I’d tell them they have 2 hrs. to get the paperwork ready, and I wouldn’t say another word. Hail a cab, and get the H E (Double Hockey Sticks) out of there. Then let the hospitalists scramble to get the paperwork in order, retroactively 😎. Stop off as an FYI, along the way to the lawyer, documentation of the experience, just in case, facts straight. (LOL)😀😎✅

On August 18th of this year I had a bunion ectomy along with repair of a hammerhead toe. Unfortunately, the bone underneath the pin broke, caused bleeding and invited infection for a party. I was briefly hospitalized and then sent home with homehelp nurses who change my bandage every day and they help with the at hime IV antibiotic infusion. I'm greatful for this service because It got me home and stabilized my toe and infection. Last week, my surgeon closed the open wound. In 1 1/2 weeks, he will go in and repair the broken bone and the fracture of the upper bone caused by the pin angeling up. I am blessed!!❤❤❤😇

You know, there used to be a system in place to do this in-home care and there wasn't a problem with discharge patients receiving it when needed. The Catholic Church, when it wasn't attached to the government teat, had entire communities of men and women who were called to a life of self-renunciation and complete devotion to the welfare of their fellow man. Hospitals used to be FILLED with them. They were called nuns (women) and monks (men). Having taken vows of poverty, which allowed them to renounce their own wants, these people were fully trained professionals that had minimal needs themselves and hence the majority of any money spent would go, not to paying each worker's bills, but rather to the care of the patients. When you kick God out of any institution, this destruction happens. When the godless begin to reap what they have sown, they are quick to lay blame elsewhere and double down on the very evils they perpetrated in the first place.

What about GP's as they do not attend bed bound patients or patients in homes. Even taking patients blood they have passed this onto The District Nurses. Who needs this care people who cannot get out but GP'S used to look as after these patients but not today.

Perhaps one reason there are so many unfulfilled vacancies is that the NHS and just about everyone else requires a DBS check. Even your local supermarket requires one to stack shelves! As a court conviction is so common nowadays, I think the NHS are losing out on a lot of capable people.

😢😢My FIL was given 6 months or less to live. He was sent home with a do not resuscitate. After 3 days at home US social services FORCED him to go into a nursing home because his wife was too small to pick him up if he fell. First day the nursing home stuck him in covid isolation ward where he died 10 days later. ( The sad thing is only his wife was allowed to visit with him. She said it took over 2 hours to get a nurse anytime they rang for one because there were no nurses on that ward. She could have gotten quicker help at home from her neighbors ) He died of heart failure and neither of them ever had any Covid symptoms.

I don’t know how these hospitals in this country get away with doing that, but they do literally just tossed out in the street like trash.

I wont put my care & life in the hands of the healthcare system. My Mother passed away with little care in our local hospital because the staff wasn't there. I can barely see my medical practitioner when I need to see her & this has placed me at high risk because of my health conditions. I have come to the conclusion that if I want to stay comfortable & face less risk, its better for me to stay home & take care of self even if it means my life will end. If that is the case, I'd rather die in my home & not let anyone know how sick I really am. I no longer trust the healthcare system & I blame government for this, As with any professional human healthcare & wellness service I no longer trust any of them, this includes the FDA etc etc etc.

I don't understand this. I had a heart attack and medically discharged myself (against medical advice or AMA) the very same day simply because I had no one who could or would go get my dog and I wasn't about to leave him there alone no matter what. I did go back the next day after both my parents barked at me to return myself asap. They did agree that the dog needed care and Mom ended up taking him in for the time that I stayed until all the testing was done and proved I didn't have and heart damage. If a person wants to go home and has family to care for them at home then let them go home.

When I live in the UK 40 plus years ago NHS was really good, the biggest problem is the comunity help is the issue, they keep focusing on the hospitals and all the money ends up there, when they need to focus on in home help if needs to be upgrading the home environment so they can stay at home, but then the other side of the issue is who to help first, it’s the same thing in Australia, and the ones who need the help are ignored and the ones who can afford to do the upgrades to their home themselves are getting the help that the others should be getting.

The elephant in the room is that there are too many old people. Until the boomers die off this problem isnt going away. And while previous generations died in their 70s early 80s, the boomers are all living well into their 90s. So this problem will stay for another 20/30 years. Stroke at 70, heart attack at 75, parkibsons at 80, dementia at 85, cancer at 90. Each time it gets more and more costly. Its really not unsual for doctors to be treating people with 6 or 7 teriminal illnesses at once.
