I wrestle with the world of salary negotiations. I once interviewed at Unity and their salary was posted on the JD which was like $125k and I'm thinking "ha! I can negotiate this to $175k or more" but the recruiter told me there was no space for salary negotiation and the reason was because they wanted to focus discussions around candidate experience and qualifications and create parity on the team so people are not paid unequally because one person was really good at negotiating during their interview but someone else on the team wasn't. Everyone gets paid fairly for doing their job. He also said that people of color, women, or other groups like veterans, queer people, people where English is a second language, or even older candidates don't feel like they have leverage and are more timid to negotiate. So they post their salary transparently, saves everyone time, and doesn't create friction in the futre. And I really appreciated and respected that. Also- didn't get the job and stayed at Salesforce where I had to keep negotiating lol.

As a woman in IT, I agree some negotiations help with the pay. However, it would depend on each individual worth. Not all programmers skill are the same. Negotiations basically tell the company that your skill worth more money. But no one would pay for overpriced employee. In my experience, once I pay over $120k, my money happiness doesn’t move that much. The higher you pay, the more you are in target when economy is bad. But if you are so skilled that company justified in keeping, you would stay longer in high pay category

That's crazy you felt confident enough to negotiate to $175k!! I had such a hard time negotiating for $2k more for my salary and they ended up not even meeting me there 😭
@helenwo7570
@helenwo7570 9 ай бұрын
@@SPDcru aww I'm sorry! And I think that is the exact reason why I respected Unity for being super transparent about their salaries. So someone like you who is competent at their job gets paid the same as someone else who is equally competent but maybe that person knew the right thing to say to get a higher salary or used a buzzword or made a special bond with the recruiting manager- whatever it is. That is not fair and has no merit on someone's performance. Unless you were interviewing to be a hostage negotiator 😄

lol you never negotiate up to 50k. I understand 15-20k but 50 on base is close to delusional. Maybe it could happen between 2015 and 2021 but not anymore.

I’m 36 and just starting to build my career because I spent my 20s taking care of my parents who got cancer back to back and both passed away from it. I’m finally just starting to build my life and I feel so behind. I’m so tired of being underpaid and taken advantage of while everyone at my company tells me how valuable I am and that if I just “stick it out” I’ll end up in an executive role. No thanks. I’ve always loved tech and I’ve considered going back to school for it, but I’m not going to lie, all the layoffs and being in my 30s already scares me. I feel so far from earning my true potential and salaries like you discuss seem unfathomable. I hope I get there soon, but until then, I’ll keep watching and taking notes!
@megaprimegamer1184

So one thing you gotta keep in mind with this is these are all mostly Bay Area salaries. Well there’s some of them in Seattle and NYC but that’s about it. The funny thing is while it’s a comfortable salary, you ain’t buying a home in these places unless you crack $400k or so. Typically requires both husband and wife to be making money. Like the home prices are in millions for a regular home. The mortgage rates alone would be $10-15k a month. So most people just leave the area after a while or hope they grow within the company. As for you, It’s not impossible really. What matters most is the company. Tech industry positions including non engineering roles get decent comp along with company stock. That’s the major difference. So if you want to make it into this field. I’d suggest to start finding roles in the Bay Area.

I just wanted to say I’m so sorry for your losses and I can relate somewhat. I was caregiving for my mom almost all my 20s and she passed at the end of 2022. I was 31… I’m grateful I’m living with my dad and he’s been teaching me things, and I’m also feeling like I’m starting from scratch with a career and life for sure. Good luck with figuring out your next steps in life! Maybe watch Mel Robbins? I’ve been watching her podcasts on here for clarity on direction. But if you know you want to get into tech, maybe play around with it! I understand with hearing about all the layoffs…

So sorry for your loss ❤. You are EXTREMELY strong and powerful just know that. One thing I can tell you is that you HAVE to do something you somewhat enjoy. Doing a career purely for the $ or because it’s prestigious will lead to burnout and you will not be the best in it. It constantly leads you to question your worth and abilities. Meanwhile there might be something that actually interests you but you’re just not doing yet. This might be something you crush because you like it and because of that you can do really well. In fact, you will probably do better than other people in this area. And this leads to way less questioning in your abilities. You totally got this. ❤🎉 not going to just say best of luck because we all believe in your abilities! KEEP GOING. You matter ! ❤

I'm so sorry for your loss Emily. I know where you're at but don't be discouraged. Be targeted in what you do to build your career. Get your certifications, this will help you catch up and open up more opportunities. Then stay no more than 2 years in one company. Move around until you feel you're being compensated enough to live the lifestyle you need. I've doubled my salary in just over 3 years doing this. I'm 37yrs now, I played small and was intimidated by management positions so I broke through once I let go of the fear and realized fear doesn't pay the bills. You got this...stay strong girl.❤

Wooooo congrats Chloe on 100k subs 🎉 but just a side note on salary negotiations, being a recruiter myself, sometimes conversations like this get tricky! I had a candidate that we had offered her the role at the desired base salary she asked for on top of having bonuses and she negotiated for a 15% increase after. spoke to management, fought like crazy just to have the increment approved, dropped her a phone call personally after that and she STILL wanted to negotiate for a 25% increment! i had to say no to that because internally, we had to make sure we paid her fairly to the job level that is equitable to the rest of the team. plus the constant pushing of increment felt like to me, she wasn’t interested in actually working for the company or the job lol. i’ve also had candidates that sold themselves really well and asked for a high salary only to fail delivering what they needed to do on the job because they sold themselves way too high during the interview 😅 I think the value of salary negotiation is making sure you aren’t low-balled, getting lower than market rates and paid what you deserve from the role. but please don’t push it too far! these conversations count as a first impression even before you step into the company so always remember the higher you’re paid, the higher the expectation there is for you so make sure you walk the talk! :-)
@looppp
@looppp 10 ай бұрын
Definitely agree on that failing to deliver part. You can ask for a ridiculously high number after the initial offer, but if you don't work up to it, you will be first to get canned. Especially in today's job market where cost cutting is still on the top of mind for leadership and board. 150k -> 250k in her video for her friend is nuts.

Congrats! I'm in the Pharmaceutical industry but I like seeing how people in other industries negotiate in their respective fields. I usually negotiate with external companies as well as my current company and see what is the best compensation package and work life style they have to offer. I do that on a yearly basis just for in case of any layoffs or maybe the raise just wasn't good enough. But looks like we all are alike in that negotiation is the best practice one can do for moving up in career.

I’m really scared of what is going to become my future soon going into the real world but im also so excited too! I’m already on my 2nd IT internship with a 3d printing company and coming from a low income background prior it’s amazing to see how much i am making as a college student. still slightly below living wage in massachusetts but it’s insane. I want to get better at negotiating when the time comes. as a second gen filipino american and first generation to go to college it’s daunting to what’s to come in the next 5 years and it’s super scary. I would love to connect if possible maybe sometime in the future as i have projects soon to come to promote south east asians in tech as it’s been an huge goal for myself to create. hi ru! are you looking for a general cost:income breakdown? i did do a video on "what i spend in a week" a few videos back. perhaps that might be interesting to check out? and my take on the high costs + high income is that it's not worth it. i had to move out of SF because i felt i kept trying to chase money and cost of living just kept getting more and more expensive. LA isn't exactly the cheapest place either, but there are far more options for different income brackets here.

I keep having to remind myself that this is California salaries because my eyes were legit popping out of head hearing those numbers! Texas could never! But also, I've never negotiated a salary before. I just got my first salary position as a Cloud Analyst. I really want to learn how to negotiate salary for my next job.

Very interesting and eye opening all around. I’m a registered nurse. And it’s like the exact opposite with salary in healthcare for people like me. There’s basically no negotiating, the rate is what it is. Lucky if you get $1 raise a year. Crazy.

Hi Chloe! Can you also make a video on how to get mentors and what the relationship you have with yours look like?? I have no idea how to start, but I'm getting to a point in my career where I could really use guidance.

You didn't mention about location. Other PM might get lower offers if they don't live in big cities like SF or NY ( I'm not a PM)

Exactly. that experience of getting a multi-six figure salary to just feel “comfortable” is uniquely exclusive to where she built her career (SF)

Really helpful video. I wish you had down a sit down version. It's a little hard to hear you at points or not be distracted by so much going on in the background. But regardless, thanks so much for your transparency!
