It's mesmerizing to watch the two of you pruning that tree.

You've really given me the courage to tackle my Japanese maples, including a bushy dwarf cut-leaf maple. Do you do landscape design, as well?
@AsiaPacificGarden2 ай бұрын
@@DouglasKnisely Thank you! Also, unfortunately we don't do landscape design. We only do tree work since the foundation of our business is bonsai.

I just posted a video of me doing late spring defoliation of a maple as well. Two questions.. 1. Are you doing any large branch pruning or only new (this years growth) removal? 2. You defoliated much more heavily than I did.. it seems you removed maybe 80% of the leaves. If the tree is healthy with a strong spring growth… is it safe to do such a large defoliation every year or does the tree need a recovery year? I am used to working on bonsai but I am trying to learn how to apply bonsai pruning techniques to garden trees planted in the ground (Niwaki style). Thank you for the video.. the tree looks wonderful!

Great questions! 1. We didn't do any large branches for this tree, mainly because we have been servicing this tree for ten years and have already removed major branches several years ago. If you look at another one of our maple videos from a couple months back, we removed some bigger branches and explained the reasons behind it. 2. We removed more than usual with this one because it is as early spring when we filmed this. It will grow back quick. Second reason why we removed more than usual is on the request of the client. They wanted it defoliated more than usual to open up the sight lines from their windows. It is absolutely safe to remove even ALL of the leaves if needed. We service this particular tree every single year and remove this much if not more. Styling a landscape tree as a bonsai is such a rewarding experience!

@@AsiaPacificGarden Thank you so much for the thorough reply! This is really a big help for me to hear because I am working as a gardener doing maintenance and am a hobby bonsai artist. The company I work for does not have anyone else who has been studying bonsai and I feel that our service is not always the best when it come to specific situations where clients want detailed work done on trees. I want to start offering a service exactly like what you are doing here in my location as most of the gardens here are compact and nobody seems to be applying bonsai style technique to in-ground trees or larger potted trees. Truly I really appreciate you response… thank you so much!

@@MujoNatureArt You are welcome! You are correct in that not a lot of people apply bonsai techniques to in-ground trees. Often times you will encounter negative comments with people wondering why you're not just trimming it back into a circle or various other shapes. Don't let these comments discourage you! We are currently doing a first time cut on a white pine that is in-ground. We will be posting that video in the near future.

@@AsiaPacificGarden Interesting … I very much look forward to the White Pine video because I also have someone with a JWP which is planted in the ground. It was a former large bonsai that they planted in in their yard a long time ago and it has never been properly maintained. They asked me this spring to bring it back into shape because they no longer like how it looks. So Yes… excited to see your video! Today I actually cut back a rather large Japanese maple for someone who was unhappy with how bushy it got. On this job I was working under someones supervision and they always hold me back… but I told them I was going to take out 60%, trying to be “conservative”, they said No Way! He asked if I was going to prune it into a ball…🤣🤣… I said.. No Way! True story! Haha I took 60% and pulled quite a bit of leaves 🤣… and they liked it. Baby steps I guess. Thanks again!

@@MujoNatureArt the maple ball shape 🤦♂️ If you're the only one doing this style of pruning in your area, it will definitely be difficult to get people to see your vision, mainly because they've never seen it and have only seen the maple ball cuts. Feel free to show your clients our videos so they get an idea of what you're trying to do. At the end of one of our earlier maple videos, we showed an 18 ft wide maple that we cut and styled into a bonsai. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos, too!

why did you not cut any branches? It seems like you got rid only of leaves and tiny twigs, but did not alter any of the "tree"
@AsiaPacificGarden4 ай бұрын
There was no need to remove any of the large branches. We've been servicing this tree for ten years and have removed several large branches previously. This video was to show that by removing the leaves and small branches, you can reveal the beautiful structure that gets hidden behind an overgrown maple.
