It's so frustrating being an American these days. As I've watched the Republican Congress members, like MTG, continuously put out such extreme hateful vicious statements I feel sick to my stomach. I can't believe the Republican leaders in the US Congress continue to allow this behavior. Since trump took office, it has just gotten worse with every passing year. It's embarrassing & shameful to be an American these days. I continue to pray this will end but sometimes it feels hopeless.

Back in 2020, I dared to say on Facebook that Joe Biden was the lesser of two evils, and a sister-in-law who I had always considered one of the nicest people I knew went absolutely ape on me. Said Obama had been the most divisive President in history, that during his terms her “black friends” started giving her the skunk eye, and Biden was no better. My mom and sisters at least agreed that this sister-in-law seems to have gone round the bend, but man, it’s become so hard to feel like you can believe the person you know is the real person inside.

I was just reminding myself of this yesterday; I can still see Fred Rogers sharing that lesson in his soothing, calming voice with his TV audience... Wise and comforting words that his mother said to him "whenever he'd see scary things in the news"! I believe the first time he shared that story with us, his viewing audience, was just after Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. Fred Rogers has always been a kind of role model and even hero to me; not that I idolize him, but just that from all I've learned about and from him over the years, he was such a dear man and a wonderful example of what being a loving, humble Christian looks like. 💖🙏🕊️

I was a teenager in the1960s, and our country was turbulent then. Most of the trouble resulted from people not being treated as equally important and significant. Many gains were made and better opportunities allowed people to just live their lives. It seems like many people want to reverse what gains were made. Our country is not perfect, but when you have a situation where people are pledging their loyalty to a person, rather than their country, we are in a precarious position. My mom used to say that!! This is the longest trip in a handbasket I've ever seen! 😸 There's always something, that signifies to each generation, that the world is going to "hell in a handbasket". To me it's the loss of civility, the inability to have a disagreement, without it going totally off the rails and in some instances, someone getting killed. And all because of a verbal disagreement! It's insanity. With MTG, and those like her, I don't believe it's hypocrisy, but a total inability to see how what she's accusing Democrats of, is the same thing she's doing. As I was listening to you, I felt the Holy Spirit lead me to this Scripture: "10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved." Matthew 24:10-13. This may not soothe everyone's soul but it helped me by reminding me that the times we're living in, Jesus warned us about. The wife of the deceased firefighter stated on a TV interview that President Biden had called her to express his grief and provide support. She said it was a very heartfelt and genuine message, and she appreciated his phone call. She said she had not heard from the former president nor his campaign or family.

That is the trick to walking on water across a stormy lake. The storm is loud, it is menacing. We are of power, real power. Self control. She (and those like her) are loud. They find a sense of power in their rage. And that doesn't come from nowhere. I've been like that in my lifetime. Filled with rage, because it made me feel powerful. It is artificial power, but the traumatized can almost never tell the difference between real power and artificial power. I promise you she has been traumatized. Probably from childhood. It is why she sees pedophiles in every corner. We must learn to not be controlled by such storms, to not react to them. To walk through them, because the storm, it is just loud. Peace my friend.

As long as there is another day, another morning... Then we can have hope! There is always something we can do, even if that is sitting in the feeling of hopelessness I'm accepting that feeling so that we can have a place to move forward from. What is so much easier to hate and disparage and be angry that it is to find a place from where we can understand and accept each other and find tolerance for each other's flaws and differences. Thank you Rev. Ed. You are in my opinion one of the kind and knowledgeable people serving God who are getting out the word that Jesus didn't preach hate those who persecute you...but to love them. On occasion I'm learning more. I must admit it is sometimes painful...to see my shortcomings.
