The Revel F226Be is a top flight speaker: accurate, dynamic and fantastic looks. Perfect for all situations from hi-fi listening in the living room to watching movies in your home theater. It's a long video. I know. I edited it down as best I could. But this is a complex speaker and takes time to discuss the performance of it both subjectively and objectively (in an appreciable way). So, grab a snack and kick back while I discuss the performance of my favorite speaker to date.
For the full written review visit my website here:
www.erinsaudio...
If you are looking for a good but relatively inexpensive amplifier to use with this speaker, you might want to check out the Crown XLS1502, which I mention in the video. This is a good entry in to the world of hi-fi with good resale value when/if you decide to upgrade at a later date. You can find my Amazon affiliate link below:

My F226Be speakers are the first I have owned that are more satisfying over time. Usually, I become more aware of, and often irritated by, the limitations of a speaker over a period of weeks or months. The F226Be only becomes more enjoyable. Highly recommended.

I understand that. As you “dig” in to a speaker often the “awesome” factor wanes and the issues start to arise. That’s why I conduct my listening over the span of multiple sessions.

"low level dynamicism"...first time I've heard such an explanation of this aspect of speaker performance, and you explained it so well. I wish every speaker review discussed this aspect. I think it's a very important quality because we don't always want to or have the luxury of cranking up to high volumes when listening to speakers.

Hey..how big is your room? I have 26x16 ft room. I am confused between F206 vs F228BE. Is F228be too big for this size room?
@JaySchwartz-hm6fs
@JaySchwartz-hm6fs 23 күн бұрын
@@gauravpatel3494 So the first advantage is that you can Bi wire the 226be/228be which means you will usually end up with more gauge or more copper but each path is better isolated and the interference between both frequencies sharing the same path can affect image and soundstage and the extra gauge will benefit bass response. I tested both the 226be and 228be with and without a sub. Picked the 226be with a sub (getting a sub soon) and I liked the 226be with the performa 3 B112v2 over the 228be with same sub. That being said the 228be is an AWESOME speaker. I enjoy a detailed rich sounding speaker. I would think the 228be would be fine in that size room. May have to mess with positioning just like any other speaker to get what you feel sound s best. Good Luck!!

My home theater/music listening ratio used to be 95/5, but since I got the Revels, my usage has been about 50/50. They sound incredible and I don't even have them hooked up to a dedicated amp yet... The details that you heard on "Borderline" could be attributed to an awesome transient response, which, in my humble opinion, matters more than frequency response measurements in evaluating how well a speaker sounds. 26:15 I don't believe most people either when they say speakers sound larger than the room... However, the Beolab 90, which uses beamforming to send out cancellation waves towards reflections, does seem to make the front wall disappear, and sounds uncannily like there is a larger room behind them where the sound is coming from.

Hey Erin! Great work! Just a few corrections. What you heard in the beginning of “borderline” is a modified Fender Rhodes an electric keyboard with hammers just like a real piano but using tines instead of strings. It was originally devised of parts from WW2 bombers. While the Rhodes does have a percussive element to it a percussion instrument would be something like a drum, conga etc. Love your channel!

Great video and great speaker. However, I’m not certain that one can depend upon having an equal coefficient of absorption across the frequency spectrum for off axis surfaces. No complete data exists on what a “normal” room would look like and I’m fairly certain that no single schema could be adopted as universally normal. Lastly, as Harman loves to use LR4 crossover design (Dr Toole reiterates this in his work), this means that there is going to be about 360 degrees of phase rotation through each passband courtesy of the crossover. Not sure there is any good data on how this would impact off axis reflections in a normative room. I’m not sold on the absolute off axis linearity being vital to good performance. Though it is indeed nice to have.

@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 жыл бұрын
You would ideally place them away from the wall simply to get away from boundary loading of the bass (unless you want/need that). But, IMHO, their wide dispersion is ideal to place them away from the wall to help get more "space" from a recording at the listening position, as the reflections hit the wall and create additional width.

Because the bass and midrange frequency impedance goes to around 4 ohm, most AVRs would not be recommended because they simply were not designed for anything other than a 6 or 8 ohm load. @@ErinsAudioCorner Thank you, that’s understood. I refer to the following: do you know of any signal based test, that allows to measure differences, significant differences, while you are moving back or forwards on the perpendicular on half the speaker distance? I often heard phrases like: „...everything snaps in....the instruments in their right place...“ and so on. Never noticed something „snapping“. In the end it may be necessary to measure two speakers simultaneously and overlay their signal response. By the way an issue I seldom heard as a discussion point. Which speakers pairs are really identical.
@ErinsAudioCorner

Correct. For the stereo image to really be *perfect* you need to identical signals in frequency and time. Otherwise the image suffers to some degree. I have offered testing of pairs in my earlier tests but the time it takes to fully measure a speaker’s on and off-axis response is many, many hours for me. So I have had to cut down the extraneous measurements. I just don’t have the time between family and my job. I am hoping I can change that again soon, though.

30:25 - an Open Baffle speaker having all of these same qualities will easily Best the F226Be (Spatial Audio M3 or better still X3). As good as the F226Be are, as soon as you hear... or rather don't hear... the BOX you'll never want to go back. Plus the way the bass plays the room is better, plus even more with Open Baffle speakers done right. Of course with Open Baffle speakers you'll need a minimum of 3 ft behind the speakers and better still 4 to 6 ft. So IF that is a problem (because at less than 3 ft don't even bother with Open Baffle speakers) then YES, the F226Be is one of the Best speakers that money can buy (Well, if like me you like a very Neutral speaker... for the F226Be ain't no Klipsch Cornwall IV which some folks really REALLY like 😊).

Can you recommend a subwoofer for my revel m105 speakers.
@ErinsAudioCorner

It depends on your room and listening levels. Generally speaking, I’d say get as much subwoofer as your budget permits and then turn the gain down if it’s too loud. But more specifically, I’ve tested a few of the SVS subwoofers and have been happy with their performance.

I'd say this short: the best you can buy for 5-7k. Period.

Another question. Does the material of the woofer contribute to the timbre quality? Or does the freq response just matter? In other words will a Kevlar woofer sound different than a paper woofer? Or is it more around the design ? Thanks !
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. But really only above the beaming point and how it impacts come breakup. A poor design can have breakup modes that create audible issues above the crossover. A steeper crossover slope would be necessary but still may not solve the issue depending on what frequency and amplitude the breakup mode(s) occur. A well damped cone doesn’t exhibit these issues. So the answer is that the speaker should be designed with the limitations of the driver (breakup) in mind.

@@ErinsAudioCorner ok so….( sorry for all the questions man. Lol). All things being equal let’s say hypothetically. We build one speaker with Kevlar woofers and another speaker with paper woofers. They both measure the same ( this is hypothetical land). Will their timbre be different? I’m asking as I’m a musician and some gear I listen to, say for instance DACs sound like there is a note there when a flute plays. Let’s say it will be A440 but it doesn’t really sound like a flute timbre wise. I always found that to be fascinating on why that is. Thanks again. Love your channel btw

If you had the $ and room space would you go for the 228 instead? May not need a sub then.......

$7700 for a pair is a lot for made in China. Should be a more realistic $2200 given where it's made.

To me this speaker looks extremely cheap, has a very plastic look, very small speakers that don't look special or of high quality at all, even all the screws are exposed. I always scrolled right past these while browsing websites for speakers because they looked so terrible. When he said $7000 i almost spit my coffee all over my computer, checked and for the pair its actually $7700 now in 2022. These look like something you walk right past at best buy. I believe his review they probably sound great but they can only sound so great with speakers that size in a cabinet that size. Diminishing returns kick in at some point when it comes to $$$$ And no way in hell is a couple 6 inch nothing special woofers, a midrange and a tweeter worth $7700 Maybe if this thing had some substantial sized/quality speakers in a substantial sized/quality cabinet and some serious technology/materials used in the making of them, but you guys can't tell me your not basically paying for a name here. I don't see unicorn juices flowing out of that port hole.... ahahah im dying inside, these companies get away with selling us MAYBE 4-6 hundred dollars worth of speakers and box, and MAYBE 100 bucks in crossover parts for $7700... didn't even attempt to use some nicely finished materials around the speakers just straight plastic yeah and just leave those screws in that plastic visible as well......absurd TLDR white and black plastic looking thing.... with screws everywhere.... small basic looking speakers.... but it says REVEL so give me $7700 please and thank you.... and they get away with it because people pay it... if nobody bought these things they would be $2000 a pair or less in no time and they would still be profiting

These sound like excellent speakers. If you were looking for a similarly spec'd speaker which can beat them, I would suggest the ATC SCM 40A will likely match them on accuracy and dynamics and beat them on tonality: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZWklqeOa8SMiNU
There is no "perfect" speaker.
