Did you know. Gerry Anderson copied a Ford concept car when he created the fantasy vehicle. "Supercar" a vehicle from a 1960s children tv show that could fly and travel underwater, like, "The Terror" from Jules Verne's novel "Master of the World".

2023........I have this model from Revell that I bought more than 20 years ago. I never built it as I was already an adult and age 49. I love the box graphics and I keep it on display in room with my other collectibles from my youth and beyond. Its 2023 I am 69 presently, I have no plans on building it. I have no idea whether I could sell it for a profit, ( like on E-bay or Etsy) as I think Revell keeps manufacturing that model, for retail sales in hobby stores. The color it was produced in as a model is a very nice sea-foam green,...no gloss. In my youth in the 1960s, I was an avid plastic model builder. I even customized them, with add-on parts from my other models, and in some cases I modified the bodies, with plastic putty, that I sanded smooth, and used an airbrush to paint them. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and they would have model building contests, run by local hobby stores, where one could compete with other's, creations. I entered those contests yearly, and even won one year. I was awarded a certificate and my name appeared in our local newspaper. It was for a customized model of a VW Beetle. I added custom tires, and sculpted the fenders, with add-on putty. Many years later when I became a professional artist, I would utilize my teenage years' model building skills, in my sculptures. I would do custom painting, with spatter techniques. One of my jobs along the way was building displays for retail stores. Each display was different and sometimes I had to build things from scratch, and even work on things that were miniature in scale. Some things I built for retail stores, were sent to other companies, to be replicated and set up in national stores. So I was building the "original", which was later copied, to be used in stores that were in other parts of the USA. Working for a "design" company, meant the individual designer, is never credited for their creations. All the credit and recognition goes to the company, which employed us. No big deal, that is how that industry works.

Bro! This is beautiful! I thought it was real until I noticed the wood underneath your model. I'm an old man, but as a kid I was most proud of my '65 El Camino in purple & orange 2-tone. Another notable model was the Undertaker Dragster. I painted it to match the picture on the box. My first model was a Ford GT-40. That one was spray painted dk blu metallic / hand painted white stripes. I was too young and it was too advanced for me. And I barely remember a '29 Cadillac, the "gangster car" complete with a gangster on the running board holding a Thompson submachine gun. Thanks for posting this (11 years ago! (now 2023)) I just found it and I had a flood of memories of my youth ❤

Beautiful model in the '60s when I was a teenager I used to build model cars and customize them the best one was a '36 Ford AMT kit I put a '32 Ford grille sideways with '61 Chrysler headlights I Detailed the engine using thread for the plug wires and cut the doors open and did the seats with ribbed ribbon Painted it candy pagan gold and first place in a local shop in the senior division. I'm getting too old and shaky to build them anymore but I really enjoyed building them

Yes. George Barris did the custom work on the Batmobile version. Because of the very limited time frame the TV production company gave him, he didn't have time to change a whole lot. Which in retrospect might have been a good thing, considering some of the other crazy build he did. LOL The original Batmobile turned out a real icon.

Keep in mind that George Barris had barely three weeks to come up with the Batmobile... So glad he already had the Lincoln Futura in his collection ! Anyway, growing up in the '60s, this Batmobile will remain the best one for me, a true classic. It's all the other ones that were a joke, looking like trucks, not cars, and simply expandable vehicles that were treated like shit from the other Batmans... By the way, Barris was a smart guy: he bought the Futura from Ford for ONE dollar, and sold it by auction in 2013 for a whopping 4.5 million dollars ! Kudos ! 👍

This car and the 57' Chevy are my two favorite cars. The beauty, artistic in design. The style and look and the sounds these cars make are unheard of today. Even just closing a door sounds like music to my ears. Solid. Not just some cheap metal and plastic screwed together. These weren't cars, they were Automobiles. To me there is a difference. The early 70's perhaps late 60's the Automobile died in favor for cheap easily produced mass marketed junk. Unless you get something like a Bugatti, Lamborghini, or something else in that price range, you aren't going to feel the quality of a true Automobile, just perhaps a nice car. Hell, Cadillacs aren't even Cadillacs anymore. Sickens me.

An XR7 and the Speed Racer car. I probably got both wrong but I think I'm sorta close to what they are lol

If you know the history of the 1966 Batmobile then you know that the vehicle started out as the Lincoln Futura, which was featured in the film “it started with a kiss”…. Since it didn’t have an Air conditioner it must have been fun to drive around in the summer time…. Anyway, cool build. If you have a 66 Batmobile, you should ‘park’ the 2 together

Oh, yes. Originally, I wanted to display all 3 together. In the initial green as the concept car, then red, and a Batmobile all side by side. It would be an impressive display. I still can really. These aren't hard to find. This model still looks exactly this good. It is aging well.

when I was 5 years old, in 1955, my family took a trip to California. We had just eaten at a cafe, and my mother was at the cash register paying the check. There was a toy rack, like the old comic book racks that spun around, and on the rack was a model of the Futura. I begged, but mom wouldn't buy it for me. We got back on the highway, and a few minutes later, going the other way, was the actual Futura! It was the original pale green color. What a religious experience for a 5 year old!

Have to ask...Do you know anything about a "metal version" of this car sold as a toy in the late 50's? I had one but have never seen another. My best recollections of it are: about 18-20" long / working bubble top, doors, hood, trunk, and a friction motor that shot sparks! I was very young at the time ...haven't a clue what ever happened to it. I seem to recall it being red and pre-dating the "Bat mobile redo". I was born in 53 and had a number of "promotional cars" as dad was a car dealer.

They had to remove the that part of the bubble because in the sun, it would cook the occupants if it was down for too long.

The bubble canopy was hinged at the back. It popped and folded to the back. It don't know if it was automatic -- probably not. I could be wrong. I think watching the movie would tell you! The Futura's bubble canopy was obviously inspired by bubble canopies on military aircraft like the P-51 and F-86. It's got the tear drop shape down. The funny thing is that by the time the movie was made (1959), bubble canopies had become passe and aircraft canopies became faired in/streamlined with the body of the aircraft reducing pilot visibility, especially to the rear. The bubble canopy was reintroduced on fighters with the debut of the F-14 in 1970. Like other people have mentioned, they would have had to installed a powerful air conditioning unit to keep that car comfortable to sit in the sun with the bubble canopy down! The bubble canopy was going to act like a magnifying glass and make the heat that much worse. Once it's down, you're REALLY sealed in the car like a fish in vacuum-sealed plastic wrap! I have to wonder how comfortable Debbie Reynolds and Glenn Ford were driving in that car for their picture. I hope they had cooled air pumped into that car because it probably would have been uncomfortable sitting in it for hours to get the right take unless they got it right quickly. The replica Lincoln Futura (modded back from a Batmobile replica!) is often shown with the middle moveable bubble canopy section removed. Hmmm... I wonder why? That motion picture was probably the last hurrah for the concept car before it was turned into the 1966 Batmobile. By this point (1959), Ford had to know they would NEVER put the Lincoln Futura into production. I'm going to go against convention and say that I like its second paint job better than the original white. I don't like white paint jobs. They get dirty quickly. The only color I dislike more than white for a car is probably black because it sucks in all the heat!

Is this just the Batmobile resprayed red, or was the Batmobile this car resprayed black?
@Toppervision1
@Toppervision1 Жыл бұрын
Yes, in 1955 it was a prototype from Lincoln and it was green. Then it was painted red for this movie, then eventually yes, it is the original Batmobile.

Hi. Just saw this. Beautiful job! Is this the 1/25 scale model? Would you happen to know the dimensions of the car - in inches? Also, you said the model was lousy. How so? I was thinking of buying and building one as well. Im new to building a model kit - was this a tough project?
@Toppervision1
@Toppervision1 8 жыл бұрын
Wow, I forgot all about this video. I haven't been getting notifications. 87,000 views? Wow! Anyway, sorry, yes it is 1/25 scale, made by Revell. I would guess around 9 inches. I can get you the exact measurement from the car if you wish. The kit is lousy compared to most other kits. No engine, no undercarriage, and the fit of the body panels is poor. It is a very simple build though. You will probably have trouble finding the kit. Try Ebay of course.

Im inexperienced in building models from kits. Do you suppose I would be able to achieve the same results as your beautiful model or did you have to really re-work the kit (shaving plastic parts, filler, etc.). Is painting a car and adding the clear coats the way you did hard to do for someone like myself?
@Toppervision1

Steve Clarendon The assembly would be easy, but the paint job takes some experience. Practice a little on plastic spoons.

+Toppervision1 Thanks so much! Very helpful. To be honest, I have a 1/18 diecast batmobile and have scoured the internet for a 1/18 diecast futura. It would be nice ti have them side by side. The only 1/18 I could find was a 'will be shipping really soon' Minchamps Futura that is probably b.s. So, I thought Id build the model even though at 1/25 its going to be considerably smaller. Your gorgeous model, however, made me consider it despite the size difference. Thank you so much for your advice. i really appreciate it.

I never knew Barris built Batmobile from an existing Ford 1955 Lincoln concept! It's all there except for a few details. Ford sold this $250k (now ~$2.5M) car to Barris for $1 where it sat outside deteriorating for several years before Barris based the 1966 Batmobile on it -AMAZING My question is how the hell does this version steer with skirts over the front wheel? It must have an extremely large turn radius? 😂 /221230
