The rubber tiles isn't for noise reduction, it's for sonar absorption. The Germans were the first to use rubber so that their U-Boats could go undetected for longer because it won't show up on any sonar devices

The Typhoon has 2 big shrouds that cover the screws. They're not exposed like Revell's model shows. Plus it's missing the 2 seawater intake inlets that look like two protruding scoops near the back of the boat, at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions on the hull.

excellent build but the stern on the kit is completely wrong. Typhoon class has ducted propellers staggered vertical planes and separate dive planes.
@JD-pq2ym3 жыл бұрын
Revell got this kit wrong multiple times. The earlier revell kit release had a bulbous bow in addition to the above inaccuracies. But honestly, it is a pain finding accurate literature/photographs of Russian/Soviet vehicles either because they got gutted very quickly when they failed or blown to shreds by Japan or Germany, or just some classical Soviet extension of the truth. I do exclusively Russian/Soviet stuff, (why?) because I am a glutton for punishment.
@Menudofan19856 жыл бұрын
Nice work. I have one sitting in the garage waiting to be built. This I believes is revels kit from when the movie came out. It is accurate to the studio model. The real typhoon is slightly different. It wouldn't take mucj to add the caterpillar drive at the reZr a d the doors to the front. Nice weathering. Really captures the loook of a Russian sub

That's the 1 thing about Revel models. You have to use putty 99% of the time, or you just leave the gaps. I remember building this when it 1st came out. I left it black, cause that's what it looked like in the movie, even though the instructions had the paint diagram on it. Now I wish I would've took the time to do it right.

It is not a real Project 941 Akula (Typhoon) - but the Red October from the movie. The screws should have shrouds. And there should be two stern planes right behind each of the screws - there is no one center stern plane. Torpedo tubes should be in two columns - not rows. Front is too wide and should have not these two rails coming from the top.
@devil50510003 жыл бұрын

Not really my thing. Typical Revell kit to my mind. Weren't the props/blades horrible does no one make after market parts ? Would it not have been worth it to try and make your own photo-etch for them (couldn't be any worse than those kit items).
@GrahamWalters6 жыл бұрын
The ties are not to minimise noise output, even though their technical name is acoustic tiles they are actually there to alter the radar and sonar signature of the boat. To be honest there is so much worng with as a working boat its laughable, all those little crevices on the upper hull would cause cavitation, which would mean it could be detected hundreds of miles away. The props are far too small to pus a boat that big through the water, and in real life you cannot have retractable planes leaving great holes like that in the outer hull right where your airtight ballast tanks should be !. That however is not your fault, the build, paint and decaling are good. PS I am a fully qualified submariner and served on S Boats in the RN
@scalemodelling766 жыл бұрын
Oh wow were you based in Plymouth ? And thanks for sharing the information I don't know anything about ships and submarines I just read a little bit on the box . From what people are saying this kit isn't very accurate ! Thanks for commenting !
@GrahamWalters6 жыл бұрын
Remember that was a fictitious sub,and what it did in the film, tight turns etc are impossible, boats do not react that quickly !
@darthgavel6 жыл бұрын
Graham Walters Silly Russians, building 6 of a fictional submarine class. Also retractable bow planes are definitely a thing, since at least WW2.
@GrahamWalters6 жыл бұрын
Red October was based on the Typhoon class Submarine, the Revell model is so wrong it has to be based on the film version. On the model the fwd planes are too far forward and would conflict with the torpedo tubes. Also the model only shows six masts when the Typhoon had ten in all. the biggest mistake is that the Typhoons didn't have propellers of the type on the model, they actually had propulsors, which were had sharper angled blades, and more of them, this was all encased in a shroud to create a jet engine effect and an attempt to reduce propeller cavitation.
@darthgavel6 жыл бұрын
The inaccuracies are I suspect more to do with the fact that this kit is a re-box of a model designed in 1989, and exact details and clear photographs (particularly of under-water details like the propulsion) would have been extremely hard to come by for western model companies and necessitated a bit of guesswork. Also means the first kit came out a year before the film.

The Typhoon class was developed under Project 941 as the Russian Akula class (Акула), meaning shark. It is sometimes confused with other submarines, as Akula is the name NATO uses to designate the Russian Project 971 Shchuka-B (Щука-Б)-class attack submarines.

@@PrintScreen. Oh yes and please do some research, the american subs used to shadow these russian boomers at 100 yards behind them and they even knew if someone on the russian sub went to the toilet.. And if the russian boomer even showed the slightest sign of opening its missile doors, the US sub went into full battle stations, ready to sink the boomer, that's why the russian subs never opened their nuclear missile ports, there was an instance when the kursk had a fire and had to open its missile ports to vent the smoke, the following American sub was within an inch of blowing it sky high, it was only the US captains experience and realisation of what was actually happening that stopped him!
