That limousine always bugged me. "Oh, we need over 500 pounds for it to start tilting at all!" Yeah, that means it was NOT on the balance point, just close to it.
@AkiSan03 ай бұрын
its far worse. you literally see they are like 10cm in front of the "knife edge" point, so no way in hell that thing would have moved. the corner needed to be in between those lines. edit: assuming the size is standard across the pond: 5cm per tape, 3,5 tapes width from the center of the "edge" tape to the actual edge would mean they were 17,5 cm off. 43:46 shows this very clear.

I agree. The physics is straightforward: once you have a perfectly balanced system a small additional force will unbalance it. If that system is unstable, a minute force can be sufficient to cause substantial deviation. I suspect the team were attempting to mitigate uncontrolled forces, such as wind and potentially shifting material. Hence they set the car far enough back to keep it stable, unfortunately undermining the test itself in attempt to be cautious. A repeat would likely need the car to be suspended with safety ropes, much like a climber. The ropes are kept slack unless the car tips, allowing the experiment to be reset after successful attempts and thus enabling a more precarious balance point.
@scrivener683 ай бұрын
I think they bust the myth, not because it takes more force than expected to tilt the car over, but because what they really demonstrate is that it's basically impossible to get a car balanced that finely. Way too many variables, from wind to metal deforming under pressure to fluids sloshing around to...

Maybe its the camera angle causing that parallax, but it looked like the car wasn't near it's tipping point at all.

I was thinking the same thing, until I remembered that the engine would make the car quite front heavy. So, even though the car didn’t physically look like half of it was over the edge, maybe it was half over in terms of weight?

they were supposed to take a longer car, because the idea was that then a small bird could actually tip it. but they were like " were using a bigger car, so were using a bigger bird..." going totally against the original logic

The egg was out of their sight, and so he was operating purely from hand signals from his banksman. As a crane operator, I will assert that the driver is only as good as the instuction he receives.

i'd like to see perfectly built water/steam cannon. they had so much wasted energy, you can see it coming out from between the barrel and main tank. imagine what a perfectly built steam/water cannon could do. it needs to have quick release pressure valve that automatically releases pressure when it reaches certain point and entire thing has to be like 10 times stronger, so you can build up insane pressure and then the valve would auto-release when pressure is high enough. i think it would easily beat the cannon.

I always felt like they should have tapped the steam off the side of the boiler. Like - have the lid blow one way, the heater the other, and the pressure vent out the barrel radial to the two.

what the hell was that car tipping over? they totally messed that up, idea is that car is balanced on that last "straw", but they balanced it in a way that you could walk on the hood and it wouldn't tip over, that means they balanced it wrong to begin with it. you can even see, they put those tapes in there to mark perfect balance point, but when they put it over the cliff, that mark was in wrong place, it was balanced way too much towards the rear. in order for this to work, you have to balance it perfectly, only give it enough wiggle room so that wind wouldn't send it over.

I really loved this show when i was younger but to really pay attention to the episode's as a adult that has worked in many many feilds of the engineering aspects of many of the myths the have tested! The show had many questionable outcomes
@petergerdes1094Ай бұрын
This used to bother me but now I realize it's the magic that made the show work. It's not doing peer reviewed research it's edutainment and their success conditions are excite people about science and engineering, get them thinking about the problems and try not to tell people anything false. A bunch of shows have tried the format of let the guys with the science degrees or technical consultants set everything up so it's perfect and the experiment gives the ideal result. But that's a lame classroom demo with a car or explosives. The magic comes from watching the team design and build in ways that are dramatic (eg car might fall not car might tip and get caught) and do so the way an average viewer might complete with mistakes. This invites the viewer in to argue and engage in a way getting it all perfect never would.
