Saw him last week with Wilco and he's the greatest guitarist I've ever seen. I've never seen a guitarist who can be so melodic, so messy, so virtuosic, so simple, so complicated and so unique - all in one song.

I not only got to see them in Meridian, Ms, I went to the after party and met everyone but Tweedy. Me and my buddy hung out and talked with Nels for over an hour. He is as nice a gentleman you will find on the planet. He let us hold the little metal thing he uses in shot in the arm solo. Said he buys it at hardware store. I will never forget how gracious he was and how polite the entire band was. They literally treat u like family.Pat introduced me to his family and they started hugging me. Lol! They thought I was his best friend but I had just met him. 😂 I had a buddy that knew him so that’s how that all happened. It was a blast!

I was fortunate to have had a conversation with Nels in a bar in San Diego years ago. I had no idea who he was. At the time he was playing in an improv band with the drummer from Jane's Addiction. There were only a handful of people at the show. I was blown away by the noises that he made. After his set, he was at the bar and asked him what he was using. He spend a good 20 minutes chatting with me about guitars. I found out later he was the guitarist for Wilco after the fact. He was a really approachable guy who clearly enjoyed what he did.

His "apocalyptic" sound here sounds like a track from the Guitarrorists compilation. Namely Dave Rick's 'Where's Gitchi Oombigat At?'. If any of you like Nils Cline and this type of experimentation and haven't picked up Guitarrorists yet then do so. It's a who's-who of alt/underground/groundbreaking players from the 70s and 80s released in 1991. It changed my perception on how to approach guitar and I had already been listening to Sonic Youth since '85 when I found Confusion Is Sex and thought I was ahead of the time. I was wrong. I have always wished follow up releases would happen every decade but sadly that never happened.

You only have a Ferrari because you're overcompensating for your lack of driving skills."
