You people are ru adventurers! Fantastic video! My Dad was military, we lived in Colorado Springs and Ft Carson , mid 1950’s año later late 50’s . Dad would have Mom pack a picnic, and we would go “exploring” on old roads up in the Rockies. It gave me a healthy respect for weather, scary roads, animals, water., rocks, trees. Even the “good” roads were narrow, twisty, rail less, and sometimes peppered with boulders. My Mom, a realist, read every newspaper article about children getting lost in the woods, drug off by bears, people encountering cougars, and we saw cars that had tumbled hundreds of feet down gulches and ravines. This video brings back memories!

Thank you for highlighting my state’s history, Colorado is still a huge mining hub. Even a lot of smaller mines and quarries, like the the ones I work in, can make money. Still though, it’s incredible to see how much mines do for their surrounding towns. They’re a very large source of jobs, but now it’s very difficult for us to find workers, and that may end up putting some smaller companies out of business. It’s easy to see why there are so many abandoned mines and towns nearby when you work in the industry.

Been working my way through your channel and wanted to tell you I believe your channel is the best in the overlanding/exploration genre. Great, well-shot, edited, and narrated content, plus your lack of hyperbole and brotastic attitude is very refreshing. You come across as very likable and humble but still knowledgeable.

Beautiful video! When I was in undergraduate school at UC-Boulder, me and my then wife took several trips to many ghost towns in the state as well. We loved Central City, Black Hawk, Ames, Arrow, the old city around Canon City, Silverton, Ouray, and so many others. I hope to go exploring again soon, but with COVD and gas prices skyrocketing, I don't think I'll ever get back....but this video brings back great memories of the spring/summer of 1993. THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing them back to life!

Once again very nice work. I though I'd mention we thought of you folks the other day. While down in New Mexico we drove into a hell of a hail storm. Nothing to be done about it we pull off the main road and waited the storm out. When the sky cleared we climbed out to assess the damage and the sweet smell of sage was overwhelming. I had remembered in a previous video you mentioned how much you enjoyed the scent of Utah sage. Said to my wife I wish I could bottle this and send it your way. We could have skipped the hail but them we wouldn't have slowed down to enjoy nature's gift. Thanks for all the hard work. Safe travels ...

The area does look well maintained.
@danb.709
@danb.709 Жыл бұрын
It's not well maintained its plowed once a year in the spring, right when this video was shot. Many roads in the area are 4wd jeep trails some requiring a heavily modified offroad vehicle, if you get in trouble help could be costly and take hours to get to you, if you can even get a call out. Some of the roads are milder, but the area in general is pretty serious, good planning and a bit of experience are needed, and a real truck or suv for most of it, a crossover suv minivan thing is asking for trouble, also most rental companies forbid it. There are like a thousand little roads similar to this in Colorado, some are fine for cars and some are incredibly dangerous for any vehicle, people underestimating them is becoming a real problem, just know before you go what you're getting into.

For the most part, most 4 wheel drive roads in Colorado, at least those above 10,000 feet, stay closed well into summer and many are not plowed, so you wait for the snow to melt or you don't go at all. Except for a couple of extreme roads, most routes don't require real four wheel drive, but it comes in handy during the spring thaw and a reasonable ground clearance is usually desired. I've done many of the popular routes in a street stock Subaru, but we generally wait until late July and August, or go in September before the snow flies.

I am filled with admiration of the people who worked and settled there. They were tough people back then. My great grandfather was a coal miner back in the early 1900's to mid 1900's 50 years who worked close to Ludlow, Walsenburg, Trinidad, and Louisville. So I am really interested in old mining camps and the mines. I also have to compliment you on how prepared you were. You are a good man to have around in time of need. Colorado has always fascinated me. Most people today move there because they want to be close to the mountains and have places to visit on weekends, but most people who went to Colorado back in the 1800s were looking to get rich from mining. It's amazing the lengths people were willing to go to make a living back then, and how it often ended in failure. I often wonder what happened to the people who risked everything to get a mining job in the mountains and things didn't work out. Where did they go? Did they simply jump from one mining job to another? Did many give up and take up factory or railroad work?
