You've nailed it with space being the #1 concern in terms of staying out there for a while. I had to get rid of my Gladiator and Baroud for a 4x4 Sprinter because I just couldn't stay out for more than a couple of days in that setup and I wanted to be traveling full time. All those small options are great if you go out on weekends or take one big trip a year but beyond that they're far too small for me.

Great review, however theres no way i could convince myself, nor anyone in my family that $17k (or the price of a great condition low mileage used vehicle) is worth it for basically a fancy tent topper

Thank you Rob for the in depth side by side comparison. Nicely done video. I had narrowed my choices down to the AT Habitat and the Alu Cab Cabin for my 2019 RAM Power Wagon. I ultimately decided to go with the Alu Cab and I have been using it for about a year now. I am absolutely in love with it! You nailed it perfectly with your description. The ease of set up and breakdown is unmatched and there is zero light or dust infiltration. I opted for the Dickinson marine fireplace, which runs off of propane, and it heats the camper quite efficiently. I do wonder from time to time what having all of that space in the Habitat would be like but I guess it’s human nature to want what you don’t have. LOL. You have a really nice set up! Maxpedition makes really nice replacement zipper pulls that are positive grip and quiet. Definitely worth looking into with the amount of zippers rattling around on your habitat. Anyway, thanks again and Happy Trails!

And i thought 2-3k for a pop up tent was a lot. 17k seems to work for you because its for your business. For casual outdoors people that is way too much.

My Project M was 15900 OTD with the options I chose, its pretty cool because it has a king size bed and it leaves 3.5 ft open as a living space with the bed deployed and I can keep my bedding up there when closed. But, it is wide at the top which really hurts going down tight trails with trees.....
@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 11 ай бұрын
The Project M sounds like a great alternative as a tourer with a ton of space. I didn't look into them much because I assumed the width would make tighter and more technical trails tougher. It's not something I do a lot of, but it's nice to have the option.

Excellent review. For me, it was the 48in wide sleeping space. That was a non-starter. And as much as I like the alu- cab, not having windows, not screens but windows, was also a deal breaker. We landed on the hiatus. Little heavier but those solid pop up sides are sexy! Insulated and quieter

Maybe if it had hard sides it might be worth it. Every time it rains you would have to worry about drying it out, or it would mold. Its still just a tent on your roof. The problem is people are paying to much for to little these days.
@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 11 ай бұрын
I've never had a problem with mold, but I think it's because we use it constantly and dry it thoroughly when we get home. It's the same with all the tents I've had in the past.

sounds like the few 'negatives' could be fixed with some duct tape..gaps, rattling zippers, bright windows, waterproofing,.crying babies (just kidding) .. , i've yet to decide what to do with my Gladiator bed.. pricing and options have kept me from committing to an Alucab, GFC, decked system, etc..almost too many options..cheers Rob,,looking forward to the next trip 😎✌

I’ve had my AT Habitat on a TOYOTA Tacoma since 2018. No problems and no issues. Absolutely, love the room and setup. In high winds, i just turn the truck into the wind and it performs rock solid. I’ve built wood cabinets on top of a Decked drawer system. Getting in and out with the drawers is a problem bit I’m used to it. I’m an active 75 year old but deploying the tent and take down is no problem. Would I buy the Habitat again? Yes, I would.

How do you like the operation of the Truma heater verses the Propex? Is one louder than the other? I know you had them mounted differently but I’ve heard the Truma has a nighttime setting that’s quieter at night compared to the Propex
@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 11 ай бұрын
I didn't think the loudness of the fan was a problem with either one. The Propex is either off or on, so would warm the tent a bunch, then shut off for a bit once it reached the temperature on the thermostat. The Truma has the lower setting, so is a little better for maintaining heat at a certain temperature. Unfortunately you get that really loud click when the Truma switches from high to low or to off. The Propex is smaller too, so if I were to do my RTT heating again, I'd probably go with that. For a camper or trailer, the Truma would be my choice.

@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 11 ай бұрын
I've only seen them at expos. The seem neat, and I like the extra space. Setup seems to be a little more awkward than the Habitat, and I prefer the hard lower sides of the Habitat - it gives me a (probably false) sense of security in bear country!

Would a project M have more living and bed space?
@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 11 ай бұрын
Slightly more living space and a slider wider sleeping area thanks to the wider walls, but unless I’m wrong, I think they also overlap a little. I’ve seen a lot like it that have a slight overlap and that would make a good compromise.
@SasukeUchiha-zu6dw

@@RevereOverland I might be mistaken but I think the bed platform pulls toward the tailgate a about a foot or so so that the bed becomes king or queen sized
@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 11 ай бұрын
@@SasukeUchiha-zu6dw sounds like it could be a good alternative, and I assume it's easier to set up too. My biggest concern with it is one that theangrycamper just confirmed - it seems too wide to be used in tight places, and just doesn't seem suitable for more technical trails (not that I'm doing a ton of that in the Tundra).

Let's just say you camp for 2 weeks out of the year for the next 5 years, its equivalent to paying $243 a night to camp in a tent 😅. But then again if you can afford it who am I to judge 😁
@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 10 ай бұрын
People do that in the $30k RVs, then have to pay $70 a night to stay at an RV park. I can camp anywhere, and I estimate I’m over 15 weeks camping so far this year, most out of my truck.
