To download an mp3 file of the accompaniment, go to www.steveparkhornmusic.net. This is a beautiful, romantic piece by the Russian Composer Glazunov. It has a range from high Ab above the staff to low Ab in the bass clef. Subscribe! I will be adding more solos on a regular basis. I teach horn at a University and my goal is to create a video library of some of the best horn solos for my students and others. Also let me know if there is something you would like me to record.

I don't know how many times I've listened to this, but it seems to get better every time. Thanks for all you do for horn players, Steve.

@beforhorn I played this on a "student model" Holton 378. It plays wonderfully, as do most Holtons. I now own a Holton 276 - the Merker model. It is perhaps the best horn I have ever played on, and I have played on all of the best ones over the years.

You have to develop a low embouchure. Set the rim of the mouthpiece into the red part of your lower lip. Keep your upper lip flat. Use solid pressure. Experiment. I play the D BELOW this Ab in the intro to the Csardas, another one of my KZbin videos. Check that one out.

@shib340 I played this horn while I was between horns. The Ricco Kuhn had a great sound but I never felt comfortable on it and it got water in places that were hard to empty, so I sold it. The Holton 378 in this video turned out to be a great horn. I have now purchased a 10 year old Holton 276 Merker. It is a duel bore, hand made horn that plays incredibly well. When I get a chance, I will post some KZbin videos using it.

Great playing! I was going through your videos and there is amazing playing all around. I would love to hear the other Haydn concerto as well as the Gliere horn concerto. Again, kudos to you sir!

Last year I looked at your rondo and romance Mozart movements for help in solo and ensembles. It really helped me a lot and I went to state as a freshman. :) I love all of your videos, but I was wondering if you could play Hindemith. I will not be playing it this year, but maybe some other time. You are great! :)

@ohsteacher The first editions, published by M.P. Belaieff, have the last three measure open. See the editions on IMSLP for more information. Besides the stopped measures the Mason Jones edition adds in a few dynamics and articulations, uses a key signature (instead of writing all the flats out), has some slight rhythm changes around breath marks, uses 'new' notation for bass clef, and changes the combines some beams. The stopped/non-stopped measure is the only real significant change.

I thought it was probably the Holton 378, but I couldn't see the extra little Bb slide under the switch valve. It was obscured by the camera angle. Beautiful "melty" tone.... as usual! You have such effortless control. Sheesh! I'm eager to hear a recording on the Merker.

Could you record Sigfried's horn call ? I love your playing and would really like to hear how you would play it compared to many others that I have heard. I am currently working on this piece. It would be greatly appreciated.

If you take requests you should try recording the Hayden concerto #2 in D 1st movement. One of my favorites.

@abbellimenti The Mason Jones edition indicates to stop the entire last 6 measures. Some of the pieces in the book say "Arranged by M. J." but this one doesn't. Still, it is possible that he changed the ending. This is the only version I have ever seen or played. Does anyone else have any more info?

This is the first time I've heard this piece played where it didn't end with the e-flat played open. Are there different editions where it doesn't go from stopped to open at the end?

I wonder if you are familiar with the french horn obligato parts for the LDS hymn "Oh My Father" Crawford Gates arrangement (2nd and 4th verse) and if so, would you post it with the midi accompaniment? I have always wanted to play that and to hear it without the choir.

Oh my goodness!! ^u^ I am playing this for my horn solo this year.... I was hoping to play Felix Mendelssohn's Andante last year and this year, but my teacher didn't have it and by chance he gave me this and told me to look you up, but I started acting like a fan girl because I watched your solos before, so I was so happy to be able to listen to you play this solo. :) But I have a question or two: How do you hit the high and low A flats? &What does the 0 at the end mean after the +'s? Thanks :)

The 0 is meaning too uncup your hand that's stopping the sound. But that doesn't make artistic sense. So, i would just keep your hand in the bell and stop the sound until it fades away. In short it means too realse your hand from the bore while your playing..
