Hey Rinoa! I've been watching your vids for the last couple of months now (started with the IBM ThinkPad battery restoration, since I'm preparing to attempt a rebuild for my Latitude CPi/Inspiron 8100 so I just looked for "old laptop battery recell" and you popped up) and I always feel so comfy watching them. You two seem like really nice people, please keep up with all the great stuff you do!! BTW, that's one *great* touchscreen! I do quite like Windows 7, but for me personally, Win2K and XP are really the last truly great Microsoft OS-es. I diasgree about the general consensus that using an unsupported operating system online poses a real secutity risk, since the router's firewall will most likely be enough to protect you from "random" attacks. Still, Linux or the BSDs are never a bad choice IMO, only problem is on old machines Windows tends to be better supported funnily enough.

I recently bought myself a new tester for lead-acid batteries. The feature that sold me was an option to test based on amp-hour rating in addition to the more common settings like CCA. It recently helped in troubleshooting a misbehaving scissor lift, which we eventually found to have one of the emergency descent valves open. My boss was ready to replace all four batteries!

Hi there. I spent many years out in the field working on these. Your video is interesting and cool. One thing. Never mix different brands of batteries, also never mix different ages of even the same type. The reason is the same. Different brands and different ages offer different resistances. Good old Ohm's law will tell you that different resistances will cause them to charge/discharge at different rates. This will lower battery run time, as well as battery life.
@RinoaL10 ай бұрын
Yeah we never would mix different batteries in the same pack. Cant be helped with mixing different packs though since the system would have to handle that

Having worked on many server room APC units over the years, be very aware of the amount of energy stored in those battery packs ( do the math ), there is a reason they are made out of steel.

I have some of those powersonic 18AH batteries in a APC1500 and they seem to still be doing well after 1.5 years.. We also had a batch of about 70 Mighty Max batteries and they didn't last more than about 1.5 to 2 years.. In the search for better batteries, we're also trying out some Bright way batteries. I got a little automotive tester to measure resistance and log them down along with voltages and whatnot..

I wonder if perhaps that eeprom was actually erased by the microcontroller on the bettery itself. Ie it went to program something. Went through it's erase phase and then the voltage of the pack dropped low enough to not be able to program them.

I actually forgot to say in the video but the control board erased it again and I had to replace the whole thing

Ah, XP. It was the last Windows system I used everyday, before switching to Linux in 2012. I sometimes used Win10 for gaming and for work (when working as an EE for a company that used Altium Designer) but generally I'm a Debian gal. XP was a good system killed off after over ten years; if not for stopping support, we'd see it in mainstream use to this day and that's not what Microsoft would like.
@Lampoonlongtails10 ай бұрын
If it (software) absolutely positively has to work, XP. Kind of a joke, but there seams to be, some merit to that. I'm impressed with your depth of self taught knowledge, and your style of presentation, effectively looking over your shoulder. I agree about the serial E²PROM being blank. Static should have made the chip, unusable, not blank the data. Strange! I've not seen a sealed Lead Acid battery fail like the exploded units, you showed. Perhaps a production fault? It may be a good idea, to open that battery pack, and check for corrosion of the case. Some of the acid could have damaged the rust prevention coating of the metal case, and the inevitable will occur (rust). I've found, cheap (clear) nail-polish from a discount store, can be an effective anti corrosion coating (and also a mild 'Locktite' function).

Regarding that EEPROM, I forgot to mention in the video that I later had an issue with that board and had to swap it out, so that board may have been erasing the EEPROM in it
@Lampoonlongtails10 ай бұрын
@@RinoaL That is interesting! Perhaps that faulty board, could be a 'tear-down' episode. May, or may not discover the cause. though analysing the board, could revel something useful.

@@RinoaL Yes, maybe that will be the only APC Symmetra LX SYBT 5 you will service. But, that's an impressive skill to put on any job application. Perhaps a cottage industry, rebuilding battery modules for other clients. I've been able to get several UPSs, simply because the batteries failed (age related), and unskilled users (bean counters) see that a new unit is cheaper than having it repaired/serviced. There could be something in it, for you (you said there had been several blackouts, earlier. If that's a common occurrence, UPS's will be in demand, IMO).
@RinoaL10 ай бұрын
Yes I do work in datacentres but sadly most companies have moved on from these older batteries, so I don't have very many to do since they are going on 20 years old. I'd be best spending time researching the newer ones, however again I already know everything I need to know about this battery module so I don't feel like going further tbh.

How does that russian program work? Does it just spit out a premade dump file that you can write to the eeprom, or does it interface with the revelprog or do some other voodoo?

You save the EEPROM dump as a .bin file and load it into that program, and it just updates the .bin file. Fairly simple tbh
