You could add a booster pump to speed up the process. I use one and it produces approx 12-13 liters an hour.

They are very slow, I use a portable 3 Stage I got off Ebay for $120. It does a great job, as I run comprehensive tests, as I use it for Marine aquariums as well. Having over 3000 Litres of tanks, it takes days to get enough to do water changes, and the garden gets a good water. I only use partial RO for brewing, and adjust from there.

Good stuff Gash. Been using a cheap RO system from eBay the past 3 years. I originally bought 1 because my water was aweful. Also living in Melbourne I'm constantly hearing we have good water 🤷. I think it has something to do with the old pipes in my house (80ish years old) The 6-12 month replacement of filters is overly cautious IMO. I've heard the 6 month cycle of filters is based off 200l per day but don't have any evidence to back that up. I have not changed mine in the 3 years they have been installed and there is still a dramatic improvement over my tap water. Cheers.

Nice review mate. I used to store my RO water in sanitized cubes for later use. Best alternatives if you're buying it, are distilled water from the supermarket or hardware store and try your local aquarium store for cubes of RO water, many of them have it for topups to saltwater aquariums, At my old house, I used to have an RO system plumbed in and just let it run for 4hrs or so in the evening to fill a cube. All my wastewater went into the garden water tank.

Pretty sure water from an RO unit is a little different from distilled water. Water obtained from Reverse Osmosis still has some of the natural minerals in it, whereas distilled water is generally made from stilling boiled water, which removes pretty much everything from it

@@tomar5e115 RO removes 90-99% of minerals. (depending on how new and how good your RO unit is). So distilled is not very different and as I said it's a reasonable alternative if you can't get RO. It's not the same but close enough for most purposes. Thanks for commenting. Cheers

Thanks for the run through. I did think of getting one of these in my last place when I was still brewing but the water wastage put me off,I simply wouldn't have had a use for all that waste water,plus they were quite expensive at the time. Our rural water is pretty good as a general rule,our biggest issue is chlorine and limescale. Cheers.

Yep not cheap, though you can get cheap chinese ones.. Guess im using about 36L for a brew so around 60L waste, so not much, well, its easy to use 60L of waste around here, I use that much on cleaning half the time, between kegs and fermenters. Cheers Greg!

If you get yourself a TDS meter you will be able to determine when you want to change your filters. You'll get a fair life out of your filters as your only brewing beer especially if you flush the unit before use for about 30 seconds . Great way to soften your water for lagers. The 6-12 month rule is more for use in marine aquariums where you need clean water. Waste water is usually around 1.25ltrs per litre of water purified. I use my waste water for watering my plants.

The water here isnt too bad, but doesnt take much salts to change the taste of a beer, talking light beers and pales etc. Cheers mate!

Hi mate, love the videos. I wanted to ask. I am looking at RO filters and have seen some cheaper ones on ebay that seem similar and that alot of brewers near me are using. Obviously the kegland version is 2.5 times the price so i wanted to ask you what are the benefits (in your opinion of course) of the kegland version ? I like the buy the best when i buy things but not waste money unnecessarily. I plan on sticking to this but its indeed an expensive hobby to get going so i want to save where i can. thanks and i really enjoy your content, thanks

I don't know what the difference is to be honest, I do know that the KL has Australian stickers on it so is put together here or something and its rated to Australian standards, , that would be some of the price, I can't vouch for the others as I havent used them, they should be fine I guess? I thought the point of doing reverse osmosis water was to strip the minerals out so you could have a clean slate and add back the minerals needed for the specific style you are brewing, or are you going to be doing this in the future?

From RO water should be fairly simple set amounts to get into style then maybe tweaks for personal taste .. is there a webpage anywhere for this

Be careful when running water from a garden hose and make sure to run the hose for a little bit to get any warm water out of it from it being sitting in the sun. if you run water that’s over 40 degrees it will destroy the RO membrane.

I've found the best hose connection system is from hoselink.com.au. I've had them on my garden hose and forgotten to turn off the tap a few times and it has never leaked or let go. cheers mate
