Great video. Drove a standard Disco 2 a few days ago and I honestly wondered if there was something wrong with the turbo at first. It just seemed like trying to go quickly was a case of putting your foot to the floor and then just waiting (and waiting) for something to happen. In my own Disco (Storm Stage 2), there's enough "go" that you can actually choose the appropriate amount of throttle to apply rather than having to just plant your foot and accepting whatever acceleration the ECU decides to provide. And, for those who think remapping a 4x4 is a bit silly, try pulling out of a side-road onto a busy A-road in a stock TD5 Defender/Disco and you'll soon see the real-world benefit of a remap.

I love the way you’re so polite describing the lack of power on the stock ecu being aware of some of your viewers who prefer it that way . I had my 2002 td5 90 remapped stage 1 by Alive tuning here in Cape Town and never looked back since ;- the difference is staggering, I did upgrade the intercooler and after a week my manifold started to make screeching sound on flooring it so had to be replaced for a ceramic one . Other than that economy is brilliant and the drive is so much better it’s rather incredible . Great show and I love your enthusiasm- brilliant

I think one of the reasons that the stock tune is limited is to protect the engine when in use in a bad environment like bad fuel, oil, a lot of rain/mud or dusty. So they run nice and reliable

Yep, exactly. That's the explanation I gave in my original remap review.

Your review is spot on Liam. Just looking at my road trip app here, I note that the open road consumption can be as low as 8,67 L/100km at 100 km/h. Not bad for a boxy shaped vehicle. I would be interested to see how that compares to stock. I very seldom need to change down for hills.

I think the best way to describe the effect of the remap is that it just makes the car so much easier to drive, you can be a lot lazier. The increase in power and torque is almost incidental to that. In answer to your question about the throttle response - there is indeed a table in most diesel ecus (and definitely in a Td5) which determines how much fuel is requested for a given throttle position. If you were to simply increase the amounts here in the upper regions without doing anything else in other tables you won't increase power - but it will make it FEEL much faster and more responsive. The Td5 pedal is stupidly long travel, so adjusting the table in this way means you need to move your foot less to get the same amount of fuel, and it becomes a bit of a mind over matter thing. Any good tuner will definitely adjust this table in addition to the other required parameter adjustments, as it just makes them feel so much nicer to drive. My Disco 2 now runs a GTD2056 VNT off a Ford Ranger, and my own remap, and it start to pull from about 1200rpm in 5th, and reaches 20psi under load about 1300, peaking at 24 psi shortly after at which point it's really pulling all the way to the 4500rpm fueling cliff. Combine that with ACE, and an Ashcroft ATB, and it IS a sports car, lol. But that wasn't the goal - the goal was V8 style torque, and it's got far more than my old hi-comp 4.6 classic Rangie with a towing cam ever had. Can't be bothered changing down a gear for that roundabout or corner? No worries, just lug away on the exit from just above idle in 3rd! You were rather polite about the standard map though... I actually drove a mates Disco 2 the other day that had an oldschool 'Stage 1' map in it before remapping it for him to suit my old 2052VNT, and it drove exactly like what it is (a map where the injector calibrations have been stuffed with only in the higher ranges of the map, and that's it, drives completely like standard unless you've got the boot right into it). The phrase "Come Oooooon!" was screamed many times, with rather rude words interspersed in between, whilst creating a dent in the firewall from mashing the throttle pedal into it. I'm pretty sure two snails flipped me the bird as they overtook me, and I seriously considered whether putting a brick on the throttle and jumping out to push would make it move any faster. Needless to say said mate was rather blown away by the map it came back with, although given he'd been borrowing my car in the meantime some of the impact was lost as his is in a lower state of tune than mine!

Very nice. I am on the verge of selling my 110 td5 as its horrible to drive, slow, cruising sounds like its going to blow up over 55 mph. Have you a rough price that a Storm tuning ecu costs?
