I've had a World Rally Blue '02 WRX wagon for around 8 months now, and though I've considered ditching it for something newer or perhaps less likely to break down, I keep finding myself repeatedly falling in love with the little bastard. This review perfectly encapsulates just about everything I can say about these cars and what makes them fantastic to drive and live with, and what makes it even better is that I can still say all the same wonderful things about it at 180k.

Ive never driven one but the combination of the sound, look, and interior still make it feel like home, im very likely to get a early model WRX sedan as my first car. (because i can only get something AWD and that is by far my best option for my circumstances) Contrary to many people i actually prefer simple interiors and cloth seats, they are lighter, aswell as more raw feeling, (especially for the WRX and STi) and cloth seats dont wear nearly as much as leather. I cannot describe it very well but it seems more "realistic" and not too new and pristine, it gives it alot of character, especially in these examples how its a cheap interior but a bloody quick car. I just feel alot more comfortable in cars with similar interiors, the 90's and early 2000's cars are of my favorite era in all of their features and characteristics.

Sweet spot is 2700-5400 w/ stock TD04 turbo. Max HP is at 4500rpm so keep her in the power band and get after it. Better front sway bar and end links couple with upgraded rear sway bar end links eliminates understeer on the 02 bugeye wagon... or use the hand brake ;-) I found my silver 02 wagon completely bone stock three years ago, have down a few suspension upgrades but that was to rid the understeer as I replaced worn parts. Cannot beat the reliable solid power that EJ20T puts out and given the weight you can get that car moving. With the factory short shift and a decent map you can definitely launch the car with stock hardware to a better 0-60 time than you described ;-)

Thanks for the review. I bought a completely stock '02 wagon in the same color about eight years ago and immediately fell in love with the chassis, steering feel, the engine, and the seats. The chassis is extremely stiff and as you noted, makes no creaks or rattles. The steering feel surpasses most AWD and FWD platforms. The seats are extremely comfortable and supportive. This WRX has my favorite seats of any Subaru model of any generation. As you noted, the 02 has a noticeably more raw and mechanical feel than later Imprezas. If you haven't driven a 98-2000 2.5RS, you should, it provides an even better driver-car connection. After about a year of living with the incessant understeer, I finally had to replace the sway bars. Hotchkiss makes a reasonably priced set of hollow bars that are compatible with the wagon (not all of the bars work on the wagon). The improvement is truly impressive. Now the car rotates beautifully and controllably. As communicative as the chassis was while it was understeering, it's even better at communicating yaw and rear end grip. It's a great platform that results in an honest, pure, fun car that's also very practical and capable. Oh, and that road... I'm really jealous.

I bought a 2002 Bug Eye WRX wagon 5 speed in 2002. The 1st year for this car in America. The transmission synchro's went at 30K. The clutch started to chatter like crazy! There was a TSB for the clutch problem. The front bumper attach points cracked on EACH side about 15 Times Each! This car was in the shop constantly. With that said, I did love the car....massive turbo lag and all. I actually Lemon Lawed the car and got back 3K for the endless amount of hassle and days this thing was at my local Subaru dealership which BTW was not the best gang to deal with. BUT...everything that was said positive about the car in this video is true. If you can pick one up with all of the "bugs" worked out of the Bugeye then I say go for it, but this thing has massive turbo lag...........Do not expect it to feel like a Focus ST which I own now and IMO has NO lag and TONS of Torque!.

I bought a 2002 silver wrx wagon brand new in august 2001 and sold it in 2008. Wish I'd kept it. The wagon was definitely more of a sleeper. Note that it weighs 80 lbs more than the sedan, slight offset on 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. I modded the car with a "stage 2" turboxs turbo back exhaust and unichip and pulled 292 at the wheels. Fun car for sure and extremely practical. It pulled a 9x5 trailer with ease. Gear box was definitely not STI spec. First gear broke on these cars frequently at the drag strip in the early years. Geez, I miss that boxer rumble. Sniff sniff.

ive always thought the studder when giving it gas was from the turbo not being hot enough and/or too low of an rpm. It is a pretty good idea in these USDM versions not to go WOT under 3.5-4k because of the ringland issues in these. besides that going with a few simple bolt-ons and a stage 2 tune you can keep up with STi's for very cheap. I actually drive a 99 forester with a USDM 02 EJ205 stage 2 tune, so its the same weight and handling as the WRX wagon and I love it!

Gotta disagree with you Matt. 0-60 in the first gen WRX is indeed about 5.4s and it's about 4.8s in the 2015 and on. That is with a hard 4000rpm launch, but it's capable of that. Starting in 2015, the WRX was actually faster 0-60 than the STI. Because of the gearing, you only had to shift once to hit 60 in the WRX. STI you have to shift 2 times. Of course after that, the STI blows it away.

Probably has the best seats of the three cars and I think the interior materials are better than in the 2011. It's definitely lacking low end though lol, dp and tune helps but it's stills pretty dead under 3k. The sound is amazing especially compared to my two fa20 cars lol. The ride is pretty soft but it seems to go around corners just fine.

At the end of the 90s I was fan of the Impreza ( I always owned old GM sedan and Chevette at that time), I liked the look of the 2 and 4 door 2.5rs back then ( I still like it that square look is awesome, the 22b is he best looking Subaru ever). When they introduced this WRX, like a lot of people, I hated to rounded eyes look. I actually test drove one with a friend, in 2003 I think, he was shopping for one. The 2.0L was a little laggy but still cool. But funny thing is, now I like that look, I really think it was underappreciated at the time. ( I'm kind of giving up my age lol).
