@dan19evans, maybe so, but again, its a sports car. consider the fact that our 3.6 liter is going in full sized family sedans and producing that much power, while other six cylinder family sedans we produce have power outputs of 365 hp from a 3.5 liter.
@StickMechanic
@StickMechanic 14 жыл бұрын
@dan19evans correct me if I'm wrong, but i do believe the Ferrari 360 has a 3.6 liter 8 cylinder engine. Also, It is built in Italy. I will admit you have us with the Jaguar XJ220 (a personal favorite) but that was produced in such limited numbers. These vehicles I am using to make my point are vehicles that are commonplace on our roadways.

@dan19evans maybe not, but 304 is, especially from a naturally aspirated motor.
@dan19evans

@StickMechanic a lotus evora puts out 276hp and 24 lb-ft of torque. and thats from a 3.5 petrol V6. and the evora gets 32.5mpg. so, more power and more torque from a smaller engine, and gets better mpg....
@dan19evans
@dan19evans 14 жыл бұрын
@StickMechanic it doesnt matter what size car the engine is going into, it doesnt affect the power output of the engine. it will affect performance figures like its 0-60 times yes, but doesnt affect the power produced at the crank or the wheels
@StickMechanic
@StickMechanic 14 жыл бұрын
@dan19evans, meh... it doesn't matter. Its safe to say that the G forces generated by acceleration would most likely kill the driver, so by the end of the first second, the next six wouldn't much matter.. -.-

I have this same exact car and it still turns heads. Lots of fun and if anyone says it's a girls car don't worry, it just means women tell you how much they like it more often. Oh also mine manages a flat 6 second time 0-60 plenty for a dd.

@dan19evans either way, Mazda owns us all, with their 2.6 liter naturally aspirated rotary motor producing 700 hp... admittedly, this comment was off the wall, but i just felt like pointing that out...

@StickMechanic hmm lets think what a british manufacturer can do with 3.6 litres. TVR T350... 350hp from a 3.6 straight-6
@dan19evans
@dan19evans 14 жыл бұрын
@StickMechanic point taken, forgot it was a V8. although the radical SR8LM puts out 455hp from a 2.8 (V8 i know, but only a 2.8), and its still naturally aspirated. put that engine in a super lightweight body and youve got yourself the current record for the nurburgring for production cars...
@StickMechanic
@StickMechanic 14 жыл бұрын
@dan19evans, this part you are correct, and I will not deny. but again, this particular motor is a derivative of Toyota's mid/full size line up of cars, and was tuned for the Evora. In its original form, and used in its intended vehicles, the engine still produces more horsepower and torque, (268 and 248 respectively,) but cannot provide the fuel economy that the 3.9 liter does. But what I am trying to point out is that this makes a better comparison than a sports car and a large coupe.

@StickMechanic yes but if the mazda ur talking about is the 787b, it wasnt a road car. and yes cars have done sub 7 seconds laps round the ring, but theyre werent road legal production cars, like the radical sr8 or sr8lm

@StickMechanic my point is that it still puts out more power and torque, despite being a smaller engine...
@StickMechanic

@dan19evans its alright. You made your point. Still, would be interesting to see that... seven seconds to travel 13 miles... to pull it off, the car would have to travel at about 700 mph or so to pull it off. Feel free to correct me, as I was doing this in my head.

Well, I don't know if the info is bad, but I own a 2007 G6 GT (2 doors) and I have the 3.5 and it actualy does 230hp. But the cars you compare it to aren't made for the same thing, if you talk about the S2000, we're talking about a small car made for perfomance, it has been made to ride like a sport car. For infinity, the g35 ou g37 are luxurious versions of the 370Z (made for performance). The G6 is a car made for long comfortable rides, the 230hp are way enough for the car.
@StickMechanic
@StickMechanic 14 жыл бұрын
@dan19evans the Evora is classified as a Sports car, and weighs significantly less than a G6, classified as a Large coupe/mid-sized sedan. If you were to put the Evora's Toyota derived V6 in a similarly sized car (i.e. a Toyota Camry or Solara) you'd see that 32.5 mpg drop to about 26 or 27, regardless of how many valves, cams, etc etc. This car is difficult to compare to others, as there are so few else in this class that offer the same configurations. The Camry/Solara is the closest.
@StickMechanic
@StickMechanic 14 жыл бұрын
I'm impressed you knew what I was talking about. While you are right that it was not road legal, the fact that it merely exists proves that, while not entirely practical, It could be done. As for running the 'ring, no car has or ever will run the ring in 7 seconds. 7 minutes yes. As of 07 it was a Porsche that held the record @ the ring. It was a road legal vehicle, but not in America, due to safety restrictions. I believe second was a Lamborghini, and third was the Corvette Z06 (C6)
@dan19evans

@StickMechanic another example of europeans getting more power from is the ferrari 360 - 400bhp. even metro made a V6 version which put out 380hp from a 3.0 litre V6.. and a more refined version of the engine with a couple of turbos put out nearly 550hp in the jaguar xj220....
@StickMechanic
@StickMechanic 14 жыл бұрын
@dan19evans you forgot to mention the fact that that motor has 12 more valves and 3 more cams, and a DOHC configuration. The result is that mechanical efficiencies lost through the pushrods are eliminated. That, and diesel has a higher thermal efficiency than gas (petrol.) Of course it will put up better figures with all those advantages. Considering the Pontiac is a gas powered V6, 30 mpg is very impressive. I've yet to see a gas powered Jaguar do that.

@dan19evans i apologize for the delay before. I was dressing a wound i suffered in class today. I am aware that it doesn't matter the size of the car that its going into. It is simply the fact that these motors produce that much power, and wouldn't normally be seen in that particular type of vehicle. I suppose its for that little niche that love hauling ass to baseball practice...

I'd argue that the GTP 3.9 was the best of all the Pontiac G6 variants. Legendary GM OHV V6 with great horsepower, torque, and VVT, hydraulic steering, sexy wavelike styling stretched out over the wheels, and this coupe is roomy inside. I'd love to have one.
@EyeonthePrize247
@EyeonthePrize247 2 жыл бұрын
I felt proud to have the first specific issue with my 06… a cylinder 2 misfire along with some other jargon I forget (back in 2011) but basically oil slipped on the VVT or something and GM came out from Michigan to do a case study which was cool.
@StickMechanic
@StickMechanic 14 жыл бұрын
@dan19evans, what i meant to do was suggest that you compare this motor to similarly sized, petrol powered six cylinder engines of v-type configuration from other vehicles. For the reasons stated before, it is very difficult to compare petrol and diesel.

@StickMechanic 14 жыл бұрын
@dan19evans, the other thing that was never mentioned by TheNewMrCool was the fact that in 2007, the 3.9 litre OHV was replaced by a 3.6 litre DOHC V6 that produces 252 hp and 251 lb ft of torque. More recent variants of the same motor produce no less than 281 hp and 266 lb ft of torque. Tuned variants get 304 hp and 273 lb ft of torque.

@dan19evans, LM, standing for LeMans I'm assuming. Any car in LM trim is going to have ungodly amounts of power, regardless of engine size. However I do believe that it is a Porsche that currently holds the record at the 'ring, with a sub-7 minute time. I have the records somewhere... though they may have changed since then.

Rough ride at times. rough idle steering clunk "Pros" Reliable. Decent HP comfy seats that give a real sports car feel. decent rear leg room small things such as EX temp, Digital MPG ratio, and other dummy integration. Decent factory stereo. @TheNewMrCool a jaguar XF can get 271hp and 440 ft-lbs of torque from a 3.0litre DIESEL V6. compare that to the 240hp and 241 ft-lbs of torque from the pontiac, and thats from a 3.9 litre PETROL V6. and being a diesel its guaranteed to get higher mpg than the pontiac, and the jag wont be ready for the scrapper after 5 years like the pontiac.

Because GM as much as I like them is still a big massive company that will do ANYTHING to keep itself alive. If That means dropping a good brand and making thousands or more lose their jobs, so be it (they don't care). Maybe it's just me but there seemed to be more Pontiacs around here both old and new then other GM brands.

@StickMechanic thats exactly my point about american cars. a single camshaft and 2 valves per cylinder? when will the americans actually learn something about making sports cars? and the reason i compared it to a diesel is to prove how little power the americans get out of an engine, when us british can get more power and more torque out of a diesel engine that is smaller than your petrol engine. and the only reason that engine gets good mpg is because of its pathetic 2 valves per cylinder...

Cause Pontiac kept having flop after flop! The Vibe, Sunfire, G5, Aztek & Solstice. The G8 & GTO where great, but way over priced for the time, the Trans Am was dead. That's why they killed it and Saturn.
@hakeemsd70m
@hakeemsd70m 5 жыл бұрын
How was the Solstice a flop? The car sold extremely well for its time and today is a sought-after collector car, along with the similar and slightly more elusive Saturn Sky. And don't believe the hype behind the Aztec, it was not the reason that GM cancelled Pontiac. The reason GM cancelled Pontiac was because Buick was their best selling brand in China at the time, so of course they wanted to keep Chinese capitalism alive, while putting thousands of American workers out of work. They basically sold out to the Chinese.

Had one of these in convertible for a few years. No wonder GM killed pontiac. Good looking cars but the cheapest interiors ever even the leather seats were crap that didn't hold up and started to split. Plastic coatings on all the buttons on the dash started peeling revealing white underneath that stuck out like a sore thumb and looked like trash. Heater core leak at just over 120,000. Wheel hub went right on cue at just over 100,000. The absolute worst mpg you can ever have for a car. Lucky if you get 17 mpg average. Exhaust made strange sounds that the dealer couldn't pin down. The coolant system used lots of cheap plastic parts and connectors that cracked and were proprietary and could only be bought at the dealer. Trac control lights would light up at high speed and kick on the check engine light. It was due to crummy wiring harnesses used by GM that they issued a recall for but did not replace the harnesses, but only slapped on dielectric grease and sent it back out. Lights still came on regularly when I finally managed to pull off a miracle and get a dealership to take it for a trade in after a few attempts over the past couple years with having fair credit. The problem was most didn't want to give the fair blue book because it was a Pontiac that is now a dead brand that had one of the worse reputations for reliability and quality materials. If your looking at buying one of these used. Don't, no matter how good it still looks and no matter how great a rock bottom deal your getting. Do yourself a favor and go foreign. America's time for great and reliable cars that last well over 150,000 miles is long gone.

We had a 2012 Chevy Malibu 2.4, almost identical to the G6, and we never had any serious problems in over 100,000 miles of ownership. We had to replace the starter and break rotors around 60-70K miles. The 2.4L Ecotec was supremely reliable. Unfortunately, we were in an accident which totalted the car.

Zekican Ozkaya I know this comment is ages old but your comment is entirely off to a degree.The displacement doesnt equal the physical size of an engine. A Ford 5.0 block is actually bigger and taller than an ls 5.7 L. A pushrod engine is less bulky because its less complex, ala the 3.9L. Also the s2000s engine has no torque and you have to wind the hell out of it to get the power in the upper rpm ranges. I believe at the time, the higher end Nissan v6s in Maximas and Infinitis commanded a msrp in the 31k+ range. Several grand more than what the GTP was going for.
