Love this car. After doing some upgrades and custom tune this car is so aggressive. Suspension was one of the first upgrades I did which gave a huge improvement to body roll and responsiveness.

If I'm not mistaken I believe that M-Sport package is actually 320 hp and 320 lb ft torque. The power/torque option on the display would have shown this. But there are so many options for BMW models it may be that this one was the base 300/300.

The X Drive cars actually use the standard suspension regardless of package. On RWD models they get the M 704 suspension. The XDrive cars did have hydraulic steering vs the electric on the RWD models though.

Good info, thanks for that. All I know is it felt a lot tighter than the previous 535s I've driven without the package. Maybe BMW made revisions through the years. The other ones I drove were earlier F10s.

subaruwrxfan The refreshes on the F10 and the F30 did a decent amount of good in turning them around. The only thing that got worse was the addition of fake sound. Though it can be coded out, or you can have M3, M5, or i8 sounds coded in lol

Mine has the hydrologic steering it feels heavy but sport + mode this car handles on rails some body roll but it’s smooth and predictable

Matt, loved the review. I could be wrong, but as far as I know, if the xDrive option is added to the 535, the M Sport suspension gets deleted from the build and the standard suspension is used. It is, however, surprising how different the feel is with the larger wheels and lower profile tires.

Suggestion: Buy a cheap decibel meter on amazon and test each car at the same speed on the same stretch of road with cruise control on and HVAC completely off and radio off. It would be hugely helpful for people wanting to know what road noise is like. (there isn't a lot of info on that metric for some reason, making it hard to know how quiet a car like this will be)

Good idea. Unfortunately I review cars in various places and aren't able to get every car to the same spot. Also with varying wind speeds and road conditions throughout the year it would be hard to keep it fair and even. The only real way to know unfortunately is to test drive them yourself and see how they are.

The 5 series (F10) x-drives with M-Sport DID NOT come with the M-Sport suspension (package #S704). You can get it with the Dynamic Handling Package, if this one had it, however, only the RWD versions had the added "M-Sport suspension".

The back seat is the opposite of "airy". It is tight! I am 6 foot and put the driver's seat where I would drive and then moved to the back seat to see how I would fit...no leg room. I was ready to buy the 535d. I found the perfect car for me, moved money in the bank to buy, drove 3 hours to see it and test drove it and the thing I couldn't get over was the back seat space. I have 2 children and I couldn't see them riding comfortably in it for over 1 and a half hours. It is a great driving car, a beautiful car, but there was no way you can say the back seat is "Airy" that is not accurate.

I see some readers are HP disappointed with this car. Just the HP numbers will not give the all information. It is important to know the HP graph, torque and RPM range!. Power and HP comes early therefore, with 8 speed transmission, can drive like close to 400 hp. Spec should be: HORSEPOWER 302 hp @ 5800 rpm TORQUE 295 ft-lbs. @ 1300 rpm,

Very nice review. I currently own a 2014 F11 530d and it just continues to impress me. It is fast and can really get your heart racing, yet it is very, very comfortable on long road trips. I'm going to hold on to it for a couple more years. The plan is to eventually upgrade to a F10 535d or perhaps a F10 550d. We'll see.

The hilarious thing is everyone uses the (almost) same 8-speed ZF gearbox. But difference is in in-house tuning of the gearbox, so Jaguar use it for the F-Type and it works great, Chevrolet use it in the automatic Z06 and it's rubbish. Same deal with the ATS.

Interesting review, Matt! I recently had the opportunity to test drive a 2016 BMW 535i for about a week. While the powertrain was impressive, the handling and suspension feel was a huge let-down for me. It did not feel sporty whatsoever. The interesting part was that I drove an E60 535i a few week prior to that and it honestly felt like a 3 series. Loved that car. The F10 that I had wasn't an M-Sport package, and that's probably the reason why it felt like that. It was a loaner because I own a 2013 328i stick shift and it was in for a repair. I have a feeling that the new G30 will be much better with the weight reduction.

Yeah, I think the M Sport package is definitely a necessity to get rid of the floaty feeling. That's how the standard 335i I tested felt. Really sloppy without the M Sport package. I still think I like the E60 5 series handling better though.

like others have said, xdrive M sports have the standard suspension... but there's a chance the car had the adaptive suspension . If it had the standard suspension, it would have felt floaty and soft like the 335i xdrive you drove a while back.

Love the reviews. One possible suggestion, film in the shade. To many contrasting tones, makes the camera jump from overly light and dark shades. I'd even close the sunroof. But, keep up the good work, love your enthusiasm!

Nice review but there's another suspension from factory called adaptive suspension or something along those lines. Those are the real sporty cars in this current generation. If the owner was feeling fancy he/she might have fitted the m performance suspension from the M division after the fact. Find you an adaptive suspension or m performance suspension 335i and let the smiles take over! A review would be nice too :D

I just like the higher revving nature of naturally aspirated engines, in addition to the better sound you mentioned. If you're looking to save money though the diesel is the wiser choice.
