I think I’m honestly warming up to the idea of more hybrid and electrified cars. As being a car guy I still like a old school v8 and a manual or just a engine in general haha. But the torque these electric motors produce is amazing and the engineering is just cool and futuristic.

Hey Matt 👋🏻. I’m curious ... where was your review filmed? Beautiful scenery! So ... I had a tough decision on my hands. 🤔. Choice A was Audi Q5 “Prestige” or Choice B ... Volvo XC60 T8 “ Inscription”. The Audi had the virtual cockpit by Google which no one comes close to. BUT the Volvo XC60 INSCRIPTION T8 is sitting in my garage because of three factors ... (1) more comfortable than the Audi Q5. (2) faster when necessary than the Audi Q5 and (3) MOST IMPORTANTLY ... here in California (I’m in L.A.) because the Volvo Inscription T8 is considered a hybrid, it ADMITS YOU TO THE HOV LANE which is crucial. I’m very pleased with it! I’m not going to worry about reliability because now that I’m retired, I intend to turn it in for a new one just before warranty runs out. 😉

Hybrids in SUV/trucks makes sense. Since the vehicle can normally handle a lot more cargo weight, the batteries do not cause so much of a penalty to the overall chassis dynamics of the larger heavier vehicle. That and what would normally be a vehicle with poor fuel economy, now becomes something that gets good fuel millage. Small cars that are hybrid make little to no sense at all. The weight gain and cost associated with installing a hybrid system in to a smaller sized car, makes the fuel savings useless. For example the Toyota Camry comes in both versions, to where the Hybrid version gets 11 MPG more at a premium of $4K over equally equipped none hybrid model. At $2.50 for an average fuel price per gallon, you could buy roughly 1600 gallons of fuel for the $4K spent on the Hybrid version.
@bennylofgren32087 жыл бұрын
MasterMech77 Maybe it makes no sense to you as an American. But fuel prices here in Europe and most of the rest of the world are something entirely different. I pay the equivalent of $6.50 per gallon (14 SEK/liter), so as you might imagine that initial price difference rapidly becomes insignificant. Also, we get tax subsidies for buying "green" vehicles, so that makes the initial impact even less painful.
@JJ_ExMachina7 жыл бұрын
Benny Löfgren Well regardless of fuel prices, the negative results of Hybrid systems installed in to light weight compact cars is just backwards thinking (all electric is a whole different subject and makes sense in light weight cars). The weight penalty for having a hybrid system installed in say a Toyota Camry cuts its carry capacity almost in half. Meaning you could not drive "safely" with 4 adults and cargo as the vehicle's maximum gross weight will be over loaded. The standard Camry can easily carry 4 passengers and cargo, without worrying about exceeding the factory breaking systems capacity. However once you start getting in to larger vehicle like Semi-trucks (aka Lorry for the overseas peeps ;) ), you gain all sorts of advantages by installing hybrid systems in to those type of vehicles. I am talking ones that use electric motors in the wheels to drive the vehicle and an internal combustion engine (aka generator running to produce power, set RPM (say 1700 for example or whatever is its most fuel efficient to power output). You would then use a power storage system like say super capacitors in banks to store energy for acceleration so that the "generator" would not have to "rev up" to supply the extra output. Then you can remove the transmission, axles, driveshafts... basically the only thing needed is a hub mount to a form of suspension and a way to attach the drive motors. Not only would you be saving thousands of pounds of weight since the transmission alone in a "semi-truck" can weight in at 4klbs. But now you are taking a vehicle that would average 8mpg or less highway and get a 30mpg or more return. So basically exactly like a Train uses... but instead adapted to be used for larger road based vehicles.
@bennylofgren32087 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on how to design hybrid vehicles, with a power generating engine driving electric wheel motors. However, I would like a battery in the mix as well, for driving shorter distances in for example cities. Super capacitors might work, but I don't think they are super enough. But I disagree with you about putting hybrid technology in "compact" cars (bear in mind that what you call a compact is a normal-sized care in Europe). It is in fact well worth the effort in most cases, both for environmental and fuel cost reasons. Not to mention drivability. An electric motor has instant torque and makes a red-light stop-and-go function very usable, for example. Also, EVs generally have better fuel economy in the city compared to on the highway, while an ICE vehicle is the other way around. A hybrid could be the best of both worlds.
@JJ_ExMachina7 жыл бұрын
Benny Löfgren I agree EV cars are the way of the future (near future at least), since a fully electric vehicle has none of the weight penalties of running two power trains, like Hybrids have. SO about the Super capacitor banks, vs battery banks. The batteries would allow you to run on pure electric alone for a given distance, however the weight associated with them is what becomes the issue. The design I was referring to in the Semi-truck example I used was to save hundreds if not thousands of pounds of weight by not using batteries. Since weight is the main reason you need more power, which equals a reduction in efficiency. By keeping everything as light as possible, you can use smaller electric drive systems, which in turn requires less power to go further. Of course this is all taking in to consideration that a Semi-truck has to pull 80,000 lbs long distances. That is where traditional hybrid systems are no better then the standard engine alone. When I was talking about compact cars I was referring to one like the VW polo, or vauxhall vectra, Toyota Corolla, Peugeot 308/208... You know cars in the compact and sub compact categories. Heck even "K" cars would fit my example as well. All these types of vehicles should either be installed with some version of small displacement turbo engine tuned for efficiency or go fully electric. In the late 80s and 90s the Honda CRX (which by the way got 50+ MPG from its 1.5l engine in the late 80s) was one of the most fuel efficient vehicles around. However if you take these types of vehicles and stick a Hybrid system in just makes little to no sense, outside of trying to make yourself "fee" good about owning a hybrid. A fully electric version is a great idea, take the Nissan Leaf, or any of the Tesla vehicles, those make sense. You get great range, fast charging, no emissions, and you don't ruin the vehicles utility, by band-aid fixing a hybrid system in to the car.

Man, since Verizon made the worst decision in their history as a company to throttle speeds of unlimited data subscribers to around 10mb/s (as low as 5% of what urban subscribers were getting before) I'm very grateful that Matt Maran is still broadcasting his channel in a still very clear and competitive 1080p, not many action shots so I don't see why that should change. Although, QHD or 4K 30fps HDR would be nice, maybe with upgraded omni-directional microphones or something similar to increase viewer involvement. So long as 60fps isn't part of the equation since it doubles required download speeds and is immensely frustrating for those who check KZbin whilst on the go/away from home. Samsung's S8, S8 Plus and Note 8 smartphones have studio quality microphones built in so I know some folks are utilising those to improve audio in their channel.
@bennylofgren32087 жыл бұрын
Danny Murphy I don't disagree with you, but one thing you should note is that doubling the frame rate doesn't double the bandwidth use. The reason is, the higher the frame rate, the less difference there is between individual frames, and the video compression algorithms used are specifically tailored to be efficient in those scenarios. Very little data needs to be sent between similar frames since they only send the deltas (diffs).
@danmurphy19947 жыл бұрын
Benny Löfgren Oh, I did not know that, but there is a slight difference right?
@bennylofgren32087 жыл бұрын
