Why Matt are you saying that all in the control instrumentation is cheap and outdated and the space in the car is small and limited? You have better choices in the same line and segment?

Matt, great review. We had a Durango Citadel AWD with the 5.7 Hemi. I got about 13-14 mpg in the city. Recently swapped it for this exact model, and we are very impressed. I had my eye on the Telluride, but the dealerships in my town had a pretty long wait list at the time. No regrets, my wife has had three different people comment at gas stations that is looks like a new MDX. We like the acceleration, best 0-60 I’ve had is 7.1. and cruising at 70mph it will get 30mpg. Keep up the great reviews!

By the way, Matt. It's worth noting that for those who don't need/want third row seating and would prefer a turbo4 engine, the new Hyundai Santa Fe is nearly identical to the Sorento. Identical in length to the 2107 Sorento and only an inch shorter than the current model. Has virtually the same interior space in the first two rows and overall cargo space. Same transmission. Same suspension. Same infotainment display (though it's a tablet style rather than integrated into the center stack). Same controls and switch gear in the same highly functional locations. If you're familiar with the Sorento you'll feel at home in the Santa Fe. And vice versa. All in all, the Santa Fe is based on the 2017 Turbo4, two row Sorento with a different skin and some additional features. Personally, my wife and I prefer the availability of third row seating for occasional use. It's a good option when hauling a gaggle of teenage girls or going out with six or more passengers that would otherwise require two vehicles. And I'm partial to a naturally aspirated V6 in this application. But for those who don't share those priorities the Hyundai Santa Fe is an excellent alternative.

Hello Stephen. I know you have a 2018 Sorento sxl. I'm curious about your night time driving. I've read some reviews for the 2019 sxl that the smart headlights aren't too good. They said the smart headlights doesn't illuminate the road a good distance as it seems to point too low. I just want to know your experience with your kia Sorento. I think that's the only thing holding me back from. Buying a 2019 sxl. Thank you!

@@lennoxruiz1193 My wife complained about that in our Sorento. A quick trip to the dealer, however, resolved the issue in about 10 minutes. I'm not sure if it's a common issue but the only fix required is to re-aim the headlights. No complaints since then.

Good review, Matt. My wife and I purchased our second Sorento last spring and I'd differ on a few points. First, it's true that externally the Sorento is smaller than most of the midsize competition. At 189 inches long it's a full 10 inches shorter than the Mazda CX-9, for example. For us, that was a positive, not a negative. It's more maneuverable in urban/suburban traffic, easier to park in public spaces, and doesn't pose a challenge fitting it in the garage. Of course, if we had to sacrifice significant interior space for those advantages it might be an issue. But the Sorento has more overall cargo capacity than the CX-9 (73 cf vs 71 cf) and more overall passenger room (154 cf vs 135 cf). It has more headroom, shoulder room and legroom in both the first and second rows than the Mazda and more headroom and legroom in the third row, as well. In fact, the only space advantage the CX-9 has over the Sorento is in the cargo capacity behind the third row (14 cf vs 11 cf). And all of this comes with a panoramic sunroof that the Mazda doesn't offer. In short, the Sorento offers a highly efficient allocation of interior space along with its "Goldlilocks" size exterior dimensions. There are, of course, other midsize SUV's that offer more capacity than the Sorento. But those, too, range from somewhat larger to massively larger than the Kia. Even so, the Sorento has more third row room than the Toyota Highlander that claims to seat three people in the third row. (A claim that adds insult to injury.) And when it comes to the features that most consumers value in an SUV, efficient allocation of interior space ranks near the top. It certainly does for us. I'd agree that the CX-9 excels in handling on secondary roads. And that's good considering its ponderous size. But in the habitat of the suburban traffic jungle, the Sorento wins hands down as a result of its more manageable size. If canyon carving is your thing (it's mine) try another vehicle. (I do.) And if you're using a vehicle for long freeway slogs, the naturally aspirated V6 in the Sorento combined with its better sound insulation makes for a more relaxing trip. Finally, there's the issue of price. Some find the highest trim level MSRP of the Sorento to be difficult to swallow. In terms of feature for feature comparable trim levels, however, the KIA meets or exceeds the competition. And in terms of "real world" pricing (i.e. serious negotiation for a purchase) I've found the KIA to be a much better value. We purchased our Sorento early in 2018 for $8000 under MSRP, making it several thousand dollars less than the best deal I found for either the Mazda CX-9 or the Toyota Highlander.

May I ask how you managed to negotiate 8k off MSRP? Best I could on a 2017 Forte is like 1.5k
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 жыл бұрын
@@vladsaghin7644: Note that I'm talking about a Sorento with an MSRP of about $48K. The Forte's MSRP is about half that. Dealers will always offer a bigger discount on a more expensive vehicle. In addition, dealers are more likely to offer large discounts on models with more limited appeal (i.e. are more difficult to sell.) The best selling model of the Sorento is one of the EX trims; the SX-L top trim is naturally less popular. Of course, a dealer won't discount a top trim model to such an extent that it's less expensive than a mid-trim level but they'll often drop the price of a top trim vehicle to close to the MSRP of a less expensive trim especially if they have a better chance of moving that mid-trim model sitting on their lot to the next customer. Finally, I purchased a 2018 Sorento several months prior to the delivery of the 2019 models and I made the deal on the last day of the month. When new models arrive dealers don't want last year's model sitting on their lot so they have a strong incentive to move them prior to the new model arrivals. Further, dealers typically earn manufacturer incentives based on monthly sales. Those incentives include both holdback payments to the dealer based on their sales and the promise of a bigger allocation of forthcoming popular models. So purchasing at the end of a month is often a good strategy.

I currently work at a Mazda and Kia dealership and I would personally take the CX-9 over the Sorento. The Kia’s infotainment and 360 camera system outperform the Mazda, but I prefer how the Mazda drives, the interior, and it is more spacious than the Kia
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but the Mazda CX-9 is not more spacious than the Kia. The Kia has more headroom and legroom in all three rows of seats. It has more overall cargo room than the CX-9 and more cargo room behind the second row. In fact, the only measure on which the CX-9 has more room is cargo capacity behind the third row (14 cu ft vs 11.3 cu ft.) Since you work at a dealership that has both vehicles, I suggest you take out a tape measure.

Stephen Hendricks I haven’t looked at any numbers and haven’t spent too much time in the back so I could be wrong, but to me and everyone I’ve talked to the CX-9 feels more spacious whether or not the numbers say it isn’t. Could have something to do with the way the seats were adjusted or something

Zakaria Fraitis I’ve only driven the 2.5T in the CX-9 and to me it sounds fine. The N/A 2.5 sounds fine in the CX-5, Mazda6, and Mazda3 imo
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 жыл бұрын
@@3turbo144 Nope. It has to do with the long exterior silhouette of the CX-9. That's very appealing in terms of overall style but it's an illusion in terms of actual interior space. The long, long hood of the CX-9 is a very old styling trick by automotive designers. Ever notice that automobiles such as sports cars designed to appeal to men have very long hoods? Freud can explain that appeal.

Happy New Year Matt. Great review as always. As I've mentioned, I have a Kia Soul, and other than that horrible dual clutch trans that I loathe, its a great vehicle. I'm honestly surprised at how little room there is in some of these SUV's between the front seats and the first passenger row behind them. I drive a 2014 Tundra double cab and I have a couple of 6'3 guys who ride in the back and honestly, they look like they would have more room in the double cab vs that Sorento. I think the 3rd row being shoved in the Sorento is compromising room. They need to make it so that the 3rd row can fold all the way down, and the row behind the driver can slide back at least a foot or so more than what it already is to really give some nice leg room to the passengers. Not everyone has 7-8 people that they need to haul.
@harrismi7
@harrismi7 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, If you need to haul 7 or 8 people get a minivan. Unfortunately people are getting brainwashed into buying SUVs.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 жыл бұрын
You need to take another look and take along a tape measure. According to Toyota the Tundra has 42.5 inches of legroom in the first row and 34.7 inches in the second row. The Sorento has 44.9 inches of legroom in the first row and 39.4 in the second row. Furthermore, the third row of seats in the Sorento does "fold all the way down" and the second row slides back and forth nearly a foot and reclines by about 20 degrees.

@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 жыл бұрын
None of the smaller midsize SUV's provide a truly accommodating third row. And if you plan to carry six or more passengers AND their gear on a road trip, you're far better off with a larger SUV or a minivan. But it's worth noting that the Sorento is more accommodating than several of its rivals smaller than the humungous VW Atlas or the other larger SUV's. It has more legroom and headroom than either the Mazda CX-9 or the Toyota Highlander. And with independent HVAC controls and vents in the third row it's not bad for short trips. We only use the third row in our Sorento occasionally. But its very useful for chauffeuring our teenage daughter and several of her friends. And when we need room for six or seven passengers on a local outing it's very convenient to avoid having to use two vehicles.

I live in California, they just passed a new law January 1st, that if your exhaust is modified in anyways it’s a $1,000 fine and it’s not a correctible offense. I had no idea this was even on the books, I was shocked!!! The reasoning is to cut down on the illegal racers blah blah, just the stupidest thing I ever heard!!! I’m still gonna mod my exhaust and enjoy my cars, but I think the whole community around the country should know about this, there is a petition everyone is signing. CA man geez!! I need to get out of here!!!

You should definitely establish a price you're willing to pay before you negotiate an "out the door" price for a vehicle. And STICK TO IT. In my experience (and it's only my experience) I've found KIA dealers are more willing to negotiate a price than most other brands. For example, I purchased the top trim (SX-L) Sorento in the first quarter of 2018 for more than $8000 under MSRP. With TTL the difference was close to $9000. I couldn't get that deal from either a Toyota dealer (for the Highlander) or a Mazda dealer (for the CX-9). I've also found that dealers are willing to provide greater discounts on higher trim models on their lot. (Mid-trim vehicles like the EX are easier to sell.) I suspect you'll find that while the SX-L trim of a Sorento is more expensive in terms of a "real world" price, the difference between the SX-L trim and the EX trim is considerably less than the MSRP difference. Furthermore, it's worth keeping in mind that when it comes time to sell or trade in the vehicle, you'll recover some of the additional price you paid in terms of the value of the used car. Depending on how long you hold onto a car, it can amount to about 50% of the original price difference. between a mid-level and top-trim level vehicle. Only you know what you're willing to pay. Establish that figure and stick to it. A dealer won't sell you a top trim model for less than they can get for a mid trim vehicle but the difference may not be as great as you might think. Resist the salesperson's efforts to "up sell" you but think carefully about the deal you can get and what you're willing to pay for the features included on a top trim. If the real world price difference is within that margin, think about the value of the deal, not just the purchase price.
