All the people who complain about CVT are either never owned any car with it or never drove. I have been consistent with my opinion. The best thing about this gen Maxima is its CVT and engine combo. And l trust me I know my stuff. I have driven and kept from Manual Saabs , Audi RS and BMW's. This car is a gem and treat to drive. In this price I have not been able to beat Maxima. I owned 2015 Murano and it was Ok. It got the job done. But never had any issues with CVT. Then bought 2017 Maxima SR and loved it. Then bought 2018 Rogue SL Platinum for wife and she loves it and she moved from her Rav4. And now I have traded my 2017 Maxima and bought a 2019 Maxima SR. And never once I had any issues or complain with any of these cars or CVT's. I don't get who are those people who just bitch and complain?

I own a 2004 Maxima SL with the 4 speed auto and it has almost 245K miles on it. It has been a fantastic car. I also own a 2009 Genesis with a 4.6 V8. I haven't had a chance to test out newer Maximas with a CVT, but I have driven a Subaru Outback 2.5 with the CVT and really didn't mind it at all. One thing I don't like at all, however, is the fake shifts. They make the VQ sound like a mooing, groaning cow. Hyundai/Kia have a CVT in their Forte (soon to be put into the Elantra as well) and it does a much better job at simulating shifts with real rpm ratios instead of just droning over and over again like a broken record by dropping the rpm by 500 every time it hits redline.

Nissan's marketing strategy is pretty clear across several of its models; the Maxima, Altima, Rogue, and the Murano, for example. It focuses on offering especially appealing interior appointments including very comfortable seats and upscale materials, smooth and linear power delivery and stylish overall looks. As Matt says, the Maxima is a very comfortable cruiser. As such, it's aimed at its intended market. Where it is NOT aimed is at an "enthusiast" market. But there are far more non-enthusiast drivers out there, especially among purchasers of four door non-sport sedans. And while Toyota seems to be aiming at reducing the average age of its Avalon customers or at least responding to the "sixty is the new forty" market sub-segment, Nissan is content to let the Maxima continue to grab a portion of the shrinking sedan segment with aging boomers. All in all, the Maxima seems to suffer from neglect by Nissan. They could have added AWD to give it a bit of trendy market appeal but they've chosen not to bother.

The point you made about turbocharged cars isn't really accurate. People just need to understand how motors work. A 2018 Silverado 1500 6.2 is rated at 420 horse and 460 torque and will get 17 city and 21 highway, but if you drive it like a racecar, it'll get 8 in the city. Small 4 cylinder turbocharged cars are phenomenally fuel-efficient if you drive them out of boost, meaning intentionally taking it easy around town. Like a big powerful V8 with an 8 speed trans, your vehicle is capable of EITHER power OR economy. Not both at the same time. a 1.6 turbo 4 cylinder in a 3,000 lb car can easily return 32mpg city and 38 mpg highway OR it can thrill you with close to 200 horsepower and 200 torque. Nobody should be complaining when they temporarily get 20mpg when thrashing a fun car that actually gets up and goes.

And they work better than most cars in the segment, and are the best of any CVT car. Instant downshifts and holds onto gears as long as you want. Also you have to use downshifting in corners and use the high revs to get maximum handling out of this car, downshifts make the the car brake and corner DRAMATICALLY better. The Altima is actually larger than the Maxima. At 192.9 overall length, the Altima beats out the Maxima by 0.1 inches. However, the wheelbase is where the Altima really wins out: 111.2 compared to 109.3 for the Maxima. Nissan wants the Maxima to be that 4-door sports sedan so they made it smaller to emphasis performance over interior space. Despite the CVT and FWD characteristics, I'd say Nissan was mostly successful. It does have sporty driving dynamics vs. say, an Avalon.

When you listen to the YT's that test drive these and push the accelerator you can hear that god awful CVT wonder around and up and down the power band. Then they put some fake shift points to just throw more salt on injury. I have to admit, it sounds and acts just like my CVT did in my Sentra SL with 2.0 liter. But in that application it makes sense. The Sentra does not try to be a luxury performance sedan and it never did. CVT's can only be driven like your a little old lady. Never pushed just go with the traffic flow. In that element, they are very smooth and offer decent MPG's. But in this car, its just wrong. I listen to the sounds of this awful transmission on many videos and then I drive my BMW with ZF 8 speed. That's how it is done. Good performance and still gets the MPG's. This is just cheap for Nissan to build. I would only consider this with substantial discounts.

Never going to buy another Nissan again. They have always been just getting by with known issues. Lawsuits for the cvts, their timing chain issues of older cars, braking issues and dash deterioration.

I've had nissans for years, no issue. I take really good care of my car. Wax and detail once a month between weekly washes. Car be 5 years old and people ask if I got that out of the showroom floor. Make sure maintenance is up, just like my Infiniti car. No matter what car you have, it will take care of you so long as you take care of it

So, it's better to get a Maxima instead of an Avalon if you have an Android? Pretty sad if you have to choose a car based on your phone.
@Trades465 жыл бұрын
The newer Altima actually looks better, but Nissan deliberately puts cheaper details on it to make sure it doesn't overstep the Maxima. However outside of the V6 there's not much draw compared to the new Altima which now either comes with a turbo or AWD. Perhaps the next gen Maxima would have both turbo & AWD?

Always liked the styling of the Maxima. However, it needs a new powerplant with a premium sporty transmission. I hope Nissan gives it the sportier design for it since they consider this car their 4 door sports car.

the Maxima is actually 1/10th of an inch SHORTER than the Altima, same length as the camry and half an inch larger than the accord....it's a myth that the maxima is full size... not sure why it's still in that category...maybe for price, luxury and performance, but certainly not for size
