The Outlander is a fantastic vehicle that far, far exceeded my expectations. Great getting comments about how sharp the Outlander looks too. 😎

It does not have a variable transmission. It has a SINGLE SPEED transmission, like top gear in any other manual or automatic transmission. This transmission connects the ICE to the front axle only, at speeds above 45 mph, when it needs to.

Great review. It really is an enjoyable car to drive and yet is possibly THE most practical car you can own. Long range, EV only ability, competent in modest offroad (better than Rav4 due to stronger rear motor), AC power on hand, super comfortable etc.

The fact that this is still built in japan and its rear wheel drive biased and also accelerates faster than both the korean hybrids even with them having more power is impressive and also this thing is a sleeper off-road.

I'm a current 2022 Outlander and 2015 EVO owner, I can confirm the spirit of EVO is definitely present on the Outlander with the S-AWC algorithm. Admittedly the Outlander doesn't have the pure mechanical ACD and AYC like EVO does, it uses break thrust vector for the extra yaw control in the back. However it works quite magically, and yes the chief engineer of Lancer EVO IX and X - Dr.澤瀬薰 still works for Mitsubishi Motors even today. That's the reason why they still have this EVO spirit in the Outlander.

It’s “brake”, not BREAK. Those two words are spelled differently, pronounced exactly the same way, but have very, very different meanings. 😊

Great review. Mitsi are protecting the battery in EV mode. If you want performance pop it in 'performance mode', that mode uses the engine to make electric and doubles the EV motor power. Then she really boogies, but it will cost you a bit of gas...but so worth it. It basically uses the engine as a second battery.

It's kind of a weird choice not to charge a PHEV on a daily basis given that's how it's intended to be operated. It's a great vehicle. We're picking ours up in a couple months.

Outlander PHEV does not have 3 Electric Motors, only 2. Also the Battery size is 20kWh not 16.8. I think you may have confused the size with the Toyota.

Matt, Great honest review, As you know I have never owned a crossover/SUV, always have been a all wheel drive sedan kind of guy. I told you, the Outlander is impressive. I test drove the Outlander when helping my elderly Mother when looking for new car for her. I agree the Outlander is way better than the Rogue, even though it shares the platform, and goes toe to toe with Toyota. Mitsubishi tuned it their way. Mitsubishi tuned the suspension, programmed the CVT differently, did laminated front side glass and better interior, sound damping, mitsubishi did more with the front seats. Again, I was really impressed when I test drove it. Agree The outlander is a solid product, and the styling in person really grew on me, even has headlight washers. I appreciate you reviewing the Outlander to get the word out, it is a solid product. I don't know if I will ever buy one, but if I decide to get a nice size " luxurious feeling" suv this is one, I would seriously consider. reasonably priced, nice "luxurious feel", luxurious features", great warranty, made in Japan. I really want to see Mitsubishi succeed, more competition the better. I love my American made, big, Luxurious, all wheel drive Lincoln Continental, but I guess I have a soft spot for the underdog Japanese car companies, that make great all wheel drive, good bargain, comfy, yet sporty reliable cars. I have my Subaru Legacy, Suzuki Kizashi SLS all wheel drive, and I would love to see Mitsubishi bring back a All Wheel drive sedan, but probably won't because America loves the SUV/Crossover. Nothing against Toyota at all, but I am sick of seeing RAV 4's. I am happy their is another Japanese competitor out there like Mitsubishi. the Mitsubishi Outlander looks better in person in my opinion, the interior is fantastic quality, comfy, and it does have good handling, very confident on the road. Matt, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Years to you and your Family. Have a good one, Rich p.s. If you do a live stream this weekend I will try my best to make it, love talking cars with you and the other members. p.s.s. It won't do much for views but, next year if in my area of PA, the Lincoln is still available to review and the almighty Suzuki Kizashi as well. LOL

Matt, I'm not really a SUV fan, but I appreciate your review, giving very insightful driving impressions that actually made me think "Hm... I didn't realize Mitsubishi had put so much thought into their Outlander product" -- because from the exterior it just looks like a boring, restyled SUV from another company. So thank you for another excellent review.

your thoughts vs competitors should have included 3 row PHEVs. that's the main reason to get this outlander in the first place over the billions of 2 row options, so that's what it's being cross-shopped against.

I wanted to consider this when we were shopping, but we went with the Highlander Hybrid due to Toyota reputation for quality and resale. Sure with a 'Highlander Prime' had been an option. BUT, some posts about a couple things you said: -- If I owned this vehicle and took a roadtrip, I would definitely try to coordinate my stops for food etc where I could also charge at high speed while we ate. -- Chademo is way less common than CCS, but in SoCal at least, you can definitely find them. (We own a Leaf and a Bolt EUV, along with the Highlander)

There's no point to talk about that rav4 prime anymore, you can't get it unless you wait 2-3 years. May as well just forget about it and compare outlander to other available vehicles...

Unfortunate but true. We're looking to get a PHEV SUV as our replacement family car and the Outlander is the clear top of the pack. The Tucson/Sportage/Sorento don't have heat pumps which bumps them down, as I live in Canada. And the Rav4 is effectively unavailable. The rest are either luxury vehicles, so too expensive, or have terrible range. Outlander wins.

Yeah, but a portion of it is reserved to prevent battery degradation, and to maintain hybrid operation when the driver has deliberately exploited the maximum EV range. Roughly 4kWh are held in reserve. The reviewer is referencing the "useable" battery as being 16kWh. This is why it gets ~2.4miles/kWh but its range is "only" 38 miles. This is a good thing because the battery will last longer and the cost to run it in EV mode is lessened.

Great review ! few thing worth mentioning EV mode does works if we avoid heavy foot, infact upto 120km/h have driven without getting gasoline turn on and even I got more than 50 miles several times ( even rav4 prime does the same thing flip between hybrid and ev mode not sure why its been called out saying only Mitsubishi does that ) Tarmac mode does gives you stiff steering experience Power mode gives intensive power in driving dynamics Gasoline stays clam and cabin noise isolation is much better compared to Rav4 Prime Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi built the platform its not Nissan alone did A to Z in tech features of the car. ( same goes with Mazda and Toyota often many doesn't know that this two makers share a lot of things ofcourse better copy by showing externally uniqueness ) S-AWC is superior in snow and difficult situation, Rav4Prime AWD is not that superior ! Mitsubishi is the first one to enter in SUV PHEV & top selling model in the world so far

It DOES NOT have a CVT. It has a single speed gearbox that connects the engine to the front axle at speeds above 45mph or 70km/h. Also it does not have 3 motors. It has 2 motors, one on the front axle and one on the front. Please learn about the vehicles you make videos about BEFORE you drive them.

Drove it as I would actually drive it 90% plus of time stayed in EV mode - why I bought - no new primes out there yet - tho a lot of used ones .. he did good review - really same thinking except interior quality of Mazda is definitely superior- Value proposition is not bad . Live in city and cx70 just a little too physically big for our needs but nicer vehicle . Like he said liked the Outlander handling way more than expected to - it’s nice

My wife and I were looking last summer and the Honda CRV and Mazda CX5 had the same MSRP but the Honda's had very limited supply and dealers were markig up 5K over MSRP. The Mazda we got 1500 off sticker so yeah no way the Honda is 6500 better. In terms of drive I thought the Mazda drove better. If they were the same price I'd probably go with Honda reliability but not with that kind of delta. Oh we did go to a Toyota dealer they didn't have a Rav 4 not even for a test drive.

@@gerardferry8810 I'm just supporting the topic that the Mitsu is probably far cheaper than the Toyota when you factor in dealer markup. We couldn't even test drive a Rav 4 and would have had to buy and wait months. We didn't get as far as the actual price, but I'm sure it was going to be over sticker
