Proton goes big with their largest SUV (and largest vehicle) to date, but does the X90 stick the landing?
The X90 was launched in May 2023 as the final SUV to sit atop Proton's trio, following the X50 and X70, and based on the Geely Haoyue (or Okavango in some export markets).
It's a smart looking thing, and definitely the most grown up all-new vehicle from Proton, though there are other rivals that make a stronger first impression. Inside, this X90 Flagship is possibly the best appointed vehicle the brand has offered with a cabin that's both packed with tech, equipment, and quality materials.
Its engine is also the first from Proton to receive any form of electrification - a 48V mild-hybrid system, in this case - that should deliver some handy boosts to power and efficiency to aid the 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol.
With a starting price of RM123,800, that's certainly a lot of family-friendly practicality for the money, and the range-topping Flagship we test here (priced at RM152,800) is one of the most feature-packed in its class.
This Proton, maybe more so than its stablemates, aims squarely at customers considering something from a Japanese brand, but the SUV space is cut-throat with some very entrenched players. Can the X90 hang with the big boys?
