I spend a week with the 2024 Subaru Impreza RS to see what the 6th generation Impreza is like to live with. With more refinement, technology and safety tech, plus more power for the revived RS trim, the 2024 Impreza makes a lot of great improvements. And while the lower trims are still a great value, the as-tested price of $31,045 for this loaded RS trim puts it into challenging territory with many competitors offering more at those prices, including Subaru's own WRX that can be had for the same $31,000 with an extra 89 hp. But, if the 2024 Impreza fits what you're looking for, it's a likable little car still. What do you think about the 2024 Subaru Impreza? Would you take it over a WRX, Mazda3 Hatch or Honda Civic Hatch? Thanks to Subaru for providing this vehicle to review!

So 70% of buyers of the Impreza go for the wagon, but Subaru continues to shove the sedan version of the WRX down our throats. Guarantee that the take-rate for a WRX wagon would be close to 70% as well and yet SoA just won't do it.

Great point, I'm not sure why they're being stubborn with the hatch WRX. I think some of Subaru's best years were 2011-2014. They actually listened to feedback and delivered improvements as a result.

@@MattMaranMotoring SoA was hungry back in the early 2000s. They sold so many fewer cars which is one of the reasons the WRX even came here. Man, I miss my old bugeye. And NASIOC was the place to hang out and get info on those cars. The later generations built on that, but recently SoA just doesn't care about us enthusiasts. :(

In my country we did get the WRX wagon, badged as a Levorg here. Even though its only equipped with a CVT, it sold quite well compared to its sedan counterpart.

I dont know where the poster of this Video got the 30% manual rate for the Impreza. I looked it up, and according to Autoweek, in 2022, only about 5% of Impreza buyers chose the manual. The 5% rate seems in line with numbers I have seen before; 30% manuals seems way, way too high.
@Hazdazos
@Hazdazos Жыл бұрын
@@edsmith9855 I'm not sure who was talking about manuals since YT's comment section is so disorganized. But I will say that for the WRX the take rate for manuals is something like 80%. So maybe if they lumped WRX and regular Impreza numbers together I could see it being around 30% manual for both cars combined.

Matt, Great review, and you covered it well. Myself and my family have Subaru's, I love my Lincoln Continental but that stays in the garage, Especially during winter I love my Subaru's, especially living here in PA. I will say my Mother in February got a nearly fully loaded Crosstrek and I am not a CVT fan, but Subaru on their natural aspirated engines I feel have done an amazing job with the drivetrain, I have driven her car a good amount, The Crosstrek is really amazing to me, rides great, quiet, fun with the added height, roomy. I agree this RS trim should have had the turbo engine, but at the dealership I know the owners and they said the reason no turbo in the Impreza RS is because Corporate wants the turbo exclusive to the Impreza WRX. They felt if you put the turbo in the RS it would hurt WRX sales, and would make the WRX less "special". I think they should have put the turbo as an option at least. Also, I agree with you Mazda now offering all wheel drive, makes them great competition to Subaru. I will end with this I feel Subaru with the boxer engine, that low center of gravity really gives them their own character, and with the "Symmetrical All Wheel Drive" always feel safe, their systems work well. Even though I like my Subaru's, I still hope Mitsubishi comes back out of no where with a EVO. The EVO's are really neat, I miss them sad they are gone.

Matt You mentioned the RS model has a spare in the rear when you picked up the cover ? Subaru has apparently stopped putting a spare at least in the RS model and has a "inflator kit" instead as was shown in the model you previewed. I hope the RS model has a spare tire available to fit in the space as I for one would hate to be without a spare in the middle of no where if you were to cut a tire and were unable to inflate it. Other than that I'm really stoked on the new RS model and can't wait to order one. Great review

I honestly love the look of the new Impreza, but i agree completely about the lack of value. I much rather the WRX looked like this (with a hatch and a hoodscoop and no silly cladding) or even if the RS just meant more, like if it had the BRZ engine or even just a more aggressive tune. Subaru has been really missing the mark for me, and I say that as someone who's owned multiple. Give me an actual performance hatch, please. A Levorg, a WRX hatch, a WRX powered Crosstrek, or at the very least a 6-speed option for this RS. Their vehicles just arent very competitive unless you want cheap AWD. Otherwise there are just too many better alternatives, especially for enthusiasts.

I ordered one because: I want a low auto hatch back with awd and wireless Apple CarPlay. The Mazda3 doesn’t have wireless Apple CarPlay and the rear suspension won’t be as comfortable. The civic and Corolla are front wheel drive only except for the GR Corolla which is manual only. If Subaru sold the Levorg in the US, I would have bought that instead. If BMW or Audi sold their small hatchbacks in the US I might gotten one of them.

Great review, thanks Matt. The only Suby Ive ever had was the very first year WRX in 2002 and i absolutely loved it. Best car I've ever had until I got my Mach-E in 2021. I feel like Subaru has lost their way with the WRX and this is probably a better version for most people especially with the practical wagon style. But nothing beats that Mazda Soul Red Crystal color, that alone could make me buy a Mazda 😃

Subaru can say that no one was buying a manual Impreza and they dropped it, that's understandable (if not great), but then give us a real automatic transmission or DCT. This car is perfect for me. I have a tiny detached garage that the WRX will not fit in. I get a small hatchback, but with the nice stereo and faux sporty accents. It has more than enough power for daily use. I wish I could get a manual, but at least my wife can drive it with the CVT. I’m going to order one this weekend. Finding “small” cars these days is difficult, especially hatchbacks. Parking a nice new car in my garage is paramount. I never understood people that just let their vehicles rot on the driveway.

I have the Harmon Kardon System in my Subaru it’s been a great system and I would recommend it to anybody that enjoys listening to music however at the time on my Subaru it was packaged into groups and you cannot order it separately, on my 2013 Legacy 3.6 R the dealer kept trying to push me to buy the navigation and the sunroof which navigation systems at that time were more Advanced through cell phones from continuous updates and sunroofs add weight to the top of cars and leak at that time Subaru was running the 3G platform and as all of you know 3G doesn’t exist anymore so basically it makes that navigation system obsolete so I’m glad I never ordered it. A lot of the guys on our Subaru forums for the Legacy are able to upgrade to a different head unit.

I was waiting for a 6MT FB25 Impreza or XV. The extra 500cc really helps the sluggish performance when going uphill. It's hard hitting a certain price point while adding more power, without FI or a hybrid setup. The FB16DIT motor could've been a base engine for all trim levels and tuned for the RS version, or they could have used the VA WRX powertrain (FA20F+CVT). The old school quirky Subaru from the 00s would've stuffed the EZ30 in the Impreza.

2:34 ... "impressive" or you're trying to say "buggy/glitchy/tricky/complicated/ticklish" ... pick your poison. Don't get me wrong, i'm not a troll, i'm not against evolution, BUT sometimes simple is more reliable, and much more user friendly, taking into account that these days, it looks and feels that "you" need a PhD to simply "get in" the car, not diving into the "depth" of options and settings ... in the digital era, ANALOG will be king, cause it simply works :)

On competitors, Mazda3 falls down on the rear seating. Leg room is compressed plus the trunk functionality is minimized due to the opening.

The RS name is there but the spirit isnt. This being a wagon is more in line with the TS2.5 but no one remembers that car. Being said, if this has ~200hp and a 6spd with the WRX suspension it would sell like hotcakes. They should have AT LEAST given it the SPT.

For comparison, I bought my ‘22 WRX Premium 6MT last month for $31,800 with $1504 in options. It gets 24.5mpg full tank average doing a 9 mile commute on curvy mountain roads and zero highway. On a road trip I got 30mpg at 63mph and 28mpg at 73mph. Really wonder how many of the RS model they’ll sell. The WRX has a huge trunk while the RS has a small hatch. If you want AWD+performance, get a WRX. If you want AWD+utility, there’s many, many crossovers that will suite you better than this slow little overpriced hatchback with a buzzy inefficient engine.
@edsmith9855
@edsmith9855 Жыл бұрын
Ehhh.. most other subcompact crossovers are equally (or more) "slow" compared to the 2.5L. For example, Corolla Cross (dont know if hybrid is available yet, it might be better), new HRV, Trailblazer, base Kona/Seltos. The only direct competition (sedan) is the Mazda 3 AWD. It is similar in power to the RS, but one can still get the 2.5L in some models that slightly undercut the RS.

Between this new Impreza, the Mazda 3 hatchback, and the Corolla hatchback, which would you say offers the most space for back seat passengers? So far, I've heard other car reviewers say something along the lines of "if you hate your back seat friends, the Mazda 3 hatch is it."

@@MattMaranMotoring No sir. I have an RS on order that arrives next month. They dont come with a spare. I went with the RS as my daily commute car. Chicago winters can get pretty nasty. I also have a 22 BRZ as my fun car. I suppose for people that can only have 1 the WRX is a good choice. To me the BRZ is way more fun to drive than the new WRX. It felt like a big boat and didnt even feel turbocharged honestly. Another bonus for the RS is that it gets way better MPG than the WRX and doesnt need premium.

@@boost331 I can see that making sense. Thanks for the clarification on the space, not sure why they bothered with the roadside jack then.
@boost331
@boost331 Жыл бұрын
@@MattMaranMotoring My BRZ is the same way. Has the pump, repair kit and a jack. Im assuming they give the jack to help inflate the tire. Those weak little air pumps have a hard time filling an entire flat tire with the weight of the vehicle on it. They pump much faster and with less strain on the compressor if you take the weight of by jacking it up.

I agree, the Impreza and Crosstrek are very good values in the lower trim lines, but lose some of that value equation in the higher trim levels. Subaru needs to make the 2.5L standard on both lines. Then one would not have to move up to a more expensive trim to essentially match the engine of the Mazda 3/CX-30. I think the Mazda 3 sedan looks beautiful, but after initially liking it, I have grown to not care for the hatch. The wide rear pillars are just ugly (IMO, I know a lot of people like them) and give horrible visibility. I definitely prefer the boxier shape of the Impreza. As to your question, I would definitely take the Impreza over the WRX or Civic, since I want a hatchback with AWD for winter driving in MN. The Mazda 3 AWD is a tougher choice. Both it and the Impreza have advantages and disadvantages.

I just don’t understand Subaru’s long term planning? Obviously the outback and your average sedan is the money maker but why can’t they bring back like an SVX, or even make The Baja which in my opinion they could take it out back which is an existing platform and modify it, i’ve been seeing a ton of the Santa Cruz models here in Sacramento they’re selling quite well!
