Man...I was looking forward to getting this but I wont. Im not going to be super negative about the art because art is art, but what I have a real problem with in this day and age, especially for a company that is not on its first project, and even worse as a reprint....is failing so badly at making things easy to read. Its brutal. I actually defended the new edition from people blasting it for a while but after seeing this video, it actually makes me feel bad I defended it. Its an abomination :) They need a 3rd edition asap and they need to consult with experts who can help them with "interface" and so on. Very unfortunate. Thanks for the video. Very helpful. PS: I agree with he box being amazing looking and im perfectly happy with no insert.

There is a saying...3rd time's the charm. As I said in my review, there is room for improvement and I was mainly aiming for the tile design. It's an improvement on the 1st edition for sure. We'll have to wait and see.

@@LifeofaBoardGamerI used to think it was an improvement on 1st edition but now i feel more and more like it is a step forward and a step, if not 2, backward. Readability is huge so if that's a mess, it can make the game inaccessible for some people. Dont want to assume how your vision is but for someone with poor vision, it could be amplified dramatically. And yes, I am 100% certain that if they do decide to make a 3rd edition, it would likely be the charm. I have mixed feelings about this because it will harm their loyal player base in that they will likely end up having to buy the game 3 times. So buying this or the next edition feels like rewarding incompetence. Anyways, I am just sharing some thoughts and dont mean to come off as a drama queen or anything lol. Im just a bit sad to see such a missed opportunity.

If the first edition disappears before I can get my hands on it, I'm waiting for a third edition. Second one is awful. What an extraordinary miss a an opportunity, incredible. This game deserves a superb work on art and components. I hope someday someone does something about it...

It's better to play 2nd edition than none at all...or is it... I get where you are, this was a missed opportunity for a great upgrade. Some good things did come out of it. We now have all the expansions in one place. Right?

One difference in which the first edition wins without question for me is the die icon on the player estates. I strongly prefer the die icon that is integrated into the hex with a similar colour compared the garish, glaring white die icon of the newer version. I do like some of the graphic updates for the 2nd edition on the central player board, like the scroll/parchment designs for the rounds/phase areas. I also like the bridge for the shipping action though I think they missed a great opportunity to depict actual ships on the nearby river upon which to place your markers instead of a random bridge.

There are stuff that could be better. But I got so much used to 2nd edition that I don't even notice them anymore. This is one of the rare cases where I don't care one bit about graphic design of the game because the mechanics are so great and the gameplay is so satisfying...I just don't care.

The dice are more visible and "garish" to benefit color blind players and people with other vision problems.

Thank you for comparison. Today I just bought Castles and went for the first edition. To me the newest one is too bright and jarring - as you say - "busy". And as I understand, though I haven't played it yet, the game is not theme driven. It's a very neatly made mechanic which promotes figuring out the best combination of utilising ones resources. Such a vibrant colours of the new one could be distracting. Also making some of the tiles in the new edition harder to read is rather confusing and and disappointing to me.

While 2nd Edition is not the greatest example of how you re-do stuff I must say that it grew on me. I like it and it's little imperfections. Yes, there were a lot of misses on their part but still. I like it. And you were correct about gameplay. It could be virtually any theme. You could be building a space ship for that matter. But game is just so fine on its own that I really don't care about the theme or look since mechanics are so good.

Thanks for a great review. I wished I would have seen this video earlier as a few days ago I just ordered 1st edition, I didn't realize there is a newer edition. From what I see here the 2nd edition is definitely the way to go as it has brighter, easier to read art work on the boards and with the new mini expansion elements makes this the one to get if you are new to the game. Unfortunately, I'll have to settle for the one I get. :-)

The main problem with the artwork on this new edition is that it's a mish-mash. Some pieces seems really nice and have a professional look, while others look like they have been done by a begginer. Especially the flat icons are horrible. I don't think the 1st edition has much better artwork, but at least it's consistent and it has some kind of charm. I had high hopes for the new edition, but it seems that CoB will still stay on my wishlist and not on my shelf.

I love it so much that I would play it no matter the looks. But do I wish some things were done differently...well yes. But when gameplay is good I'm OK to overlook minor mistakes in art and component quality.

Hello, a question about an expansion tile: the "white castle" says to immediately perform an action with the value of the white die. Will this action be possible only when the “white castle” tile is placed or every time the white die is rolled? Thank you

Hi, thank you for watching. You only do it once. And that is that. Like most tilea. At the time when you place it in your kingdom. If you place it in reserve it does nothing.

Art is subjective of course but I find the artwork and overall aesthetic of the new edition really awful and I'm so glad I have the first and I'm really happy with it.

I kinda love the 2nd edition art. And the fact you get all the expansions that were super hard to find for normal price. That is the main reason. Art could be improved on some parts but in general I'm satisfied with it. :)

I just happen to not be interested in any of them because I like the pure elegance of the just the base game and don't think they add anything I'm looking for. But for those interested in expansions this is quite a bargain. Very good product on that account.

But if I think that game is good but I'm not extra mad about it I want pursue all the promos and expansions.

I’ve been looking into this game but have never played it. Was going to buy the new version until I saw your video. While the old version seems to have its issues (which I’ve heard many complain about), I still feel that it Is going to be the better version for me. While having the expansions included is nice, that new board is just really busy and pretty garish. I think in trying to update the artwork, they went too far.

The new version definitely requires a little bit of getting used to it. Especially after you played the older one for years. After few plays, game really looks better then the older version. :) But on the other hand I can totally agree on your opinion. It is just the matter how much do you want expansions or not. I'm completionist who likes to have everything if possible. So 2nd edition is my way to go.

Life of a Board Gamer I’ll keep thinking about it. In all honesty, one of my main reasons for leaning toward the original is that all of the tutorial videos that I have seen use that version. So I figured it would be easier to learn. I have a problem sometimes figuring games out, so having a 1 to 1 comparison would really help. I do like the idea of having the expansions though.

@@nickhayes1626 this new edition did not changed the rules as far as I know. Only art. And you just have some little expansion in the box you can put those aside and play just the regular game. Tutorial should help you out with this edition easily.

I was thinking they had changed some things around on the cards, from what I had seen, that would make it harder to learn because it was different than the original. I’m really looking forward to finally trying out either edition. I know it’s a Legendary game, just one that somehow has never made it to a place that I had a chance to give it a go.

I think older version is quite ugly, still like it more. And even if someone thinks new one is better, i still view it a wasted opportunity. Game like this one deserves Deluxe edition and this doesnt look like one. Remember remake of Brass? Thats how you make beautiful looking game. Considering how ugly was first Castles, it was really hard to fuck up new version, and sadly thats what they did. Hard to distinguish tokens from board because of black dice dots printed and ugly color palette, meh.

I do wish that TMG got a hold of it for a 'deluxified' version. Too bad they shut down and who knows if they will be ever coming back to board game industry. And I agree Roxley did good with Brass. I have KS versions of both Lancashire and Birmingham. Who knows, maybe they did it on purpose. They still sell a lot of new version of the game. And soon they will come up with proper deluxe version of the game. But I do like that I have all those boards that were impossible to get for a decent price.

No offense to anybody, but I can hardly believe how poor a job they did with this 2nd (Anniversary) edition. Frankly, I think the game board is awful. I thought the original one was too -- until I saw the 2nd edition. Give me dull and soothing over garish, over-saturated, and busy. At least the game itself is likely to shine through no matter which version one gets.
