Dear Emma, thank you but I had to return my mirror, I felt it did not give me enough flexibility size wise and plus its not aging population friendly, in my case....

Interesting. Can you enlarge the projection size so the traced image will be much larger than the size of the ipad screen? Thanks for the tutorial!

Believe it or not, some of us really old people don't use cell phones, tablets, etc. I do have a light box that can shine through canvas. I have used that to do portraits just to get the correct placement of eyes, noses and mouths.

It looks like you could still use this "mirror" by just resting an image you want to copy on the other side instead of a tablet. Seems like that would work too. Like a magazine picture or photo, but it would reverse the image I guess

The price on this thing is ridiculous at $50. You are processing images in procreate anyway, just use that for the projection if the image is being edited. Identical set-ups are available on amazon for less than $10, then $10 for procreate and you have $30 left for high quality supplies.

Hi Emma! 2 questions- which font on Procreate was used for the words “flower” and “dirt?” And how large can the mirror project? Same size as what is on tablet? Thanks for replying.
@EmmaLefebvre
@EmmaLefebvre 4 жыл бұрын
Those words i wrote with my Apple Pencil. The mirror can project as large as the device you’re using but you can always zoom in and do small parts at a time so your artwork will be bigger.

Emma, when you were showing us how this tool works, it looked like the image was being projected onto your paper. In different reviews of this product people are saying that it does not project onto your paper, you have to look through the glass and trace from there. It that true? I am not quite sure how to do that. Thank you for any clarity.
@EmmaLefebvre
@EmmaLefebvre 4 жыл бұрын
Yes so you have to look through the glass. The camera angle I showed is how it looks through the glass. Hope that helps!

Great tool but maybe transfer to tracng paper first so you don't mess up your project as you are trying to transfer the image. Just a suggestion. Thanks for the tutorial.
@annettefournier9655

What good would that do? Then you have to graphite paper transfer the tracing. That would leave graphite lines. Wouldn't it?

You mentioned using one eye. That seems to work ok for me. Another thing I found was marking two or three key points first helped at times when I backed away and needed to go back. These points provided references so when I restarted I knew I was looking from the same angle I was initially. Also, you mentioned, some photos can be a bit dark and those aren't as easy to follow. I found this to be true but even if you can't trace an entire image, getting key points can assist in scale and the rest can be simply copied and drawn in the conventional way. Certainly, it's not the end-all/do-all tool, but it can provide a good quick assist for scaling at least. (In the meantime I'll try to learn to scale by eye from the get-go).

I noticed that the angle that this product holds the phone at is similar to the angle of my 17" notebook screen when opened....couldn't I just place a piece of ordinary glass between the screen and keyboard, cover the keyboard with my sketchbook and go from there? Thanks for this.

Hi Emma. I watched another tutorial on this and she took a portrait and was able to turn it into looking like a drawing. Also, I use a light table or it's not really a table cuz it's portable and I can trace on my watercolor paper very easily with that. Have you ever tried one?

It does appear in their ads to project onto the paper, which is why I bought it, but it doesn’t. You have to look kind of sideways through the plastic. As a result, hard to see your pen or pencil as you draw under the screen, and you really can’t see pencil lines so well. The limitation on having to be in very controlled lighting is not useful. I find it difficult to use except for the most basic of outlines and image must have high contrast. . I was hoping this would be a good tool for scaling up some architectural sketches; money would have been better spent on a device stand and projector. Their sketchbooks are awesome, kudos on the design sort of... but basically I just bought a really expensive stand for my iPad.

I LOVE the Etchr mirror! It was a total impulse buy and I use it all the time. When I was using a “light box” (i.e. my window), I would have to tear my sketch out of my sketchbook, and ruin it with big black lines so I could see what I was tracing. It’s so much handier to snap a picture of it, as well as trace things on panels for oil painting, fabrics, anything else. When you say you have trouble with depth perception, do you mean that the image is floating above your paper? I had that problem and realized it was because my phone was in a case. Your iPad looks pretty thick, and that could be giving you that problem. It may help to raise your paper a little off the table to match up with the floating image.

Emma, With the photos, what I do is I do the filters first and then increase the brightness, rather than brightening the photo at the beginning. It will provide you with the bird sketch you want, and you do not have to go through the procreate step. Try it and let me know if it works for you too!
