In this, the first part in a new series of videos for Pro Tools Expert, Technical Editor, James Ivey gets the one on one tour of the new Audient ASP 8024 HE console. James spends 3 days in the company of Audient's Bryn Wildish and the new Heritage Edition version of the classic in-line 8024 at the brand new ACM in Clapham, London. In this first video in the series James introduces the project and then Bryn shows James around the console looking at the routing and how to use the in built patch bay on the console to use external dynamics processing.

I used the older 8024 when I studied at the university of glamorgan in south wales back in the mid-2000s. Lovely sounding console

I love these Audient boards, so clean and elegant. Best modern board in the game, although I find myself lusting after the Neve Genesys Black as well(Snoop Dogg has one, lucky bastard).

A question. Why would you favour an analogue console over a DAW controller since something like the ASP does not have any plugin or DAW control. I know they have a DLC controller but I still dont understand the reasoning behind it...

A "proper" in-line analog console is a very different way to work. If you like working in the box with automation then great, but for me there is something about the older work flow that I am now really enjoying. Remember you can still automate in your DAW and treat the console as a summing device. But it is so much more than that... keep watching in the coming weeks and enjoy.

Gives the absolute best of both worlds. Must have been a total pleasure to work with the Audient.

This was the first desk I ever mixed on when I was 17 and I barely knew anything, mixed in an afternoon. These mixes still flog anything I've ever done since in the box, it's just such a relaxing and consolidating workflow. Regardless of the lack of DAW controlling, there still is a lot of reasoning behind these machines.

Great question, seems it comes down to what you prefer. I prefer tracking on a great analog console then mixing in the box with a great daw controller like the Avid S6. There is no question mixing in the box has so many advantages over out of the box mixing, especially now a days where the plug ins are so analog like. But this console is a great alternative if you want one console for everything.

How would I connect a guitar amp from the live room to the Audient ASP8024 console?

First i need to say "Awesome" ! Nice Quick View Series. Sir, can i use this console with Studio One as DAW Controller ? There are a few good Consoles out there but i dont know whats the best for me. I play very much with vst instruments and mix everything in daw with plugins but i need a big pult for my hands to controll the faders, eq and other stuff. What is the best for me you think ? I like big pults.

So this thing cost $50,000, I picked up Waves SSL channel strip on sale for $49.00 , already had a MacBook pro. I now have a 48 channel SSL desk using Logic pro X and I used $ 49,950.00 to pay down my mortgage instead of buying this outdated monstrosity. I could have purchased NEVE, API .Bottom line wisen up and save your money and keep the Mrs and the kids happy. Btw not one of my clients has ever said hey your mix was all done in the box.

If you are only mixing, I suppose the use of an analog console is only a matter of preferred workflow. But, if you also do a lot of production and tracking, there are certainly advantages when it comes to have a lot of stuff connected and routable, setting up your monitoring and so on.
