I’ve lived in New York for years, but as a guy born in Australia, part of me has been waiting to review the famous R.M. Williams boot. I can say without exaggeration that this is Australia’s national boot - if you’re an Australian male, either you or your father own a pair.
OVERVIEW
The Comfort Craftsman is the most popular Chelsea boot on offer from R.M. Williams and has an oil-resistant rubber sole that’s intended for everyday wear. (The Classic Craftsman has a leather sole and Dynamic Flex has a combination of the two.)
The upper is made from whole cut yearling leather and the boot I picked up was Chestnut, which is considerably more burgundy-colored than it looks online. If you’d rather not have a burgundy boot, pick up the rum or dark tan colors.
The square toe is also very distinctive. Overall, it’s a pretty slim, uncomplicated boot that really makes any outfit it’s worn with.
Love dressy and casual? Check out the Thursday Captain Boot: • Thursday Captain Boot ...
LEATHER
Yearling leather is made from a cow slaughtered at one year old, so it’s kind of like a compromise between calfskin and cowhide. It’s mildly grainy and both soft and hard wearing.
They did start to wrinkle within a week of wear so don’t expect this sleek appearance to last forever.
COMPARE: The dressy calfskin Jones Lace Up from Frye: • Frye Jones Lace-Up Rev...
LEATHER CARE
The company has their own line of polish, conditioner, and cleaner which makes things pretty simple. The polish isn't completely necessary if you're not bothered about shine, but the conditioner needs to be applied regularly to keep things water resistant. Use a soft cloth to rub it on.
The downside is they say the leather must be conditioned every 4 to 6 weeks, much more frequent than most other boots I’ve come across.
R.M. Williams also has a factory that does 21,000 repairs per year if you ever want the shoe repaired or reupholstered. It’s not free (anywhere from $50 to $225) and shipping to Australia costs a pretty penny, but it’ll cost less than a new pair of boots.
SOLE
Oil resistant rubber sole with a kind of mottled feel to it. There are no lugs or studs, making for a pretty classic looking boot that still has great grip and functionality.
There’s also a sewn welt for easier resoling and a fiberglass shank instead of a steel shank, which they call “airport friendly.” The shank coupled with the padded heel make for superb foot support.

FIT & SIZING
These are close to British sizes but they still might be confusing for Americans. I’m an 11.75 on a Brannock device and most of my boots are 11 D, since boots tend to run large. In the Comfort Craftsman I’m a 10.5 G. Google to find out how they suggest you go about sizing; it involves tape measures and tracing your foot on paper, all of which is frustrating but probably necessary for Americans who don’t have a nearby R.M. Williams store to go into.
LEARN MORE: The Ultimate Guide to How Boots Should Fit stridewise.com/how-boots-shoul...
The good news is the boots don’t need breaking in and are insanely, stupidly, ridiculously comfortable. I’m not exaggerating when I say these are some of the most comfy boots I’ve ever worn, and I’ve worn a lot.
PRICE
About $545. Sometimes they’re cheaper on Amazon or Bootsonline, but it can be hard to find your size.
PROS
Insanely comfortable
Yearling leather is a good compromise between calf and steer
Excellent arch and heel support
CONS
Fit can be confusing
Significant upkeep required
Pricy

Best boots ever. I wear these whether I'm at home, mustering, working the yards, ducking off to the shops (2hr drive), or at my day job flying knobs where they need to go. These are the only boots that can handle evey one of those situations and, not only survive where other boots cark it, but look bloody fantastic doing it. I have some pairs that are 20 years or more old and still look great (it's the way the yearling leather wrinkles which makes them keep looking good for years!). Some people look at the price and baulk, but you have to realise that with proper care, or even with no care for that matter, these will last 10 or 20 times as long as cheaper shoes. Where are you going to get a pair of boots this stylish, iconic, durable, practical and oh-so-comfortable for 30 - 60 bucks per year of ownership? Bloody nowhere, that's where.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 5 жыл бұрын
Right! And you can get them resoled whenever you want. How do you take care of yours, like what products do you use on the leather?
@excelephant
@excelephant 5 жыл бұрын
@@Stridewise Haha, the "products" I use on mine vary from cow shit and dust, to a blend of lanolin and beeswax of my own concoction, to the proper RM Williams leather conditioner. I almost never use actual polish (although I'm just about to receive a pair of burnished leather Craftsmans which I've been told to only use polish on, no conditioner). Obviously the ones I use mustering / branding / drenching etc don't last as long as the ones I wear flying, but as far as a difference in products I use, the lanolin/beeswax mix seems to do as good a job as the RM leather conditioner as far as protecting the leather, with the advantage of being very, VERY waterproof. Having said all that, the pairs which cop a beating in the dust, shit and extra flex and impact of hard work with cows still last me at least 8 to 10 years with just being wiped down and rubbed with my L&BW mix every now and then plus resoled as needed (not very often). Oh, and I NEVER use dubbin. It's evil and will ruin the stitching.

I had a pair years ago that were absolutely superb. I miss them, but replaced them with a pair of Aussie boots made by a guy known as The Bootman. They also are super nice and handmade. My regular daily wear Aussie boots are Redbacks. Not as fancy but still well made with steel toes.
@Chzydawg
@Chzydawg 2 жыл бұрын
The good thing about RM's is you can get them resoled and basically brought back to factory new no matter how long you've had them, a bit sad you've let an old pair go. On the other hand, Redbacks are my go to workboots too, non-slip steelcaps, comfy as anything else on the market, the only issue is with constant wear I tend to kill the soles in 6-7 months and need a new pair, but that's just me.

Yes an Australian icon indeed. I don’t think there are many wholecut Chelsea boots from other manufacturers. I really like the clean line with no join under the elastic which some expensive alternatives have. I bought chestnut yearling with a leather sole and then put a rubber Topy sole over it and some toe protectors. Had to go down a half size as well. I got measured in an RM Williams shop. Unfortunately I did not buy them when I was in Australia as I was not interested in them at the time. I got a bush hat from the Cairns shop selling the boots but the hat only gets worn in the garden. Despite that the boots bought in the UK seem cheap compared to what they cost nowadays. I use normal polish I don’t bother with makers polish. Very comfortable once they are on. You have to use a shoe horn to get them on though. So maybe not something to wear for air travel.

Stridewise It's a toss up between the Turnout (in chestnut) and Gardener (in dark brown). The former is very dressy and in the all leather construction while the latter is a great workboot. I've not tried the signature boots so can't comment on its value for money, but given how good all my RMWs are, I'd hazard they would be. Just my personal observation on RMW sizing and how it translates to US equivalent, a lot depends on the model of shoe itself and the type of toe. For example, the Craftsman has a narrow square toe so an Aussie "F" is closer to a US "C" while the Turnout has a rounder toe so an Aussie "F" is closer to a US "D". Btw, I get my Aussie and U.K. Boots in "F" and US boots in "D" as a general rule. I wish we have greater access to more American brands without the ridiculous markups. The new GST and import duties coming into place after June will make it more prohibitive. Anyway, keep up the good work mate!

I own a pair of rm Williams classic craftsman boots that I got at a value village about 5 years ago for $15 and they’re still my favorite pair of boots. @dylanhall6355
@dylanhall6355 5 жыл бұрын
Haha well mine are pretty well wrinkled so yours look quite a bit fresher! For a long time, I used dr. Martens wonder balsam, which I believe is just a blend of beeswax and lanolin, and that worked pretty well and helped with water resistance, but it made dust stick to them a lot, and left some residue in cooler temperatures. These days I use obenaufs on pretty much all of my shoes, and despite some darkening on some of my shoes, I’m pretty satisfied with that treatment. I also keep my rm’s lightly polished, which probably helps a bit with durability in the wetter conditions in my home town.

I find there's a bit more room in the Comfort rather than the Classic Craftsman, which is preferable for E fitting feet. They aren't too kind for people with high arches, as my midfoot tends to bulge just a fraction on the toe-side. Going from G to H fixes it slightly. You're spot on about the colour. Infact, if you smear a bit of their Chestnut shoe cream on a piece of white paper there is a lot of purpose going on there.

Thanks Nick @stridewise for another great review and Merry Christmas! I’m about to order a pair online (American currently living in Spain where there are no RM Williams stores) and was wondering if you could give a quick tip on sizing as you were correct in their guidance confusing us Americans! I’m usually an 11.5 in sneakers and between 11-11.5 on a Brannock (282mm long), and 10.5 in Red Wings and Trumans so it’s really hard to know if I’d be a 10.5 like you or a 10 - would you recommend going up or down with these? Per RMW I’m smack in between! I’d ask Hugh Jackman but you’re the more famous Australian...Thanks again for taking the time to do these, and P.S. your advice has already manifested in a few great buys for me (Trumans in a Gobi Mohawk and Flint and Tinder’s Waxed Trucker Jacket)!

Just wanted to give some kudos again Nick. I had actually, amazingly, never heard of R.M. Williams prior to seeing this review. This despite being a little bit of a boot dude (I’ve multiple Red Wings, Viberg, Blundstone, English made Dr Martens...). Big oversight on my part! Anyway I just lucked into a pair of barely-worn RM Stockman buckle boots in their burnished leather on EBay for a paltry $300! Easily the best boot bargain I’ve ever found. These things are rad. The quality control and comfort are honestly better than anything I’ve encountered, even Viberg. That said these do feel waaay “daintier” (for lack of a better term) than a Viberg or a Red Wing, but I understand these are essentially dress boots, and I’m willing to bet they’ll prove just as durable with proper care. Anyway, props for the excellent reviews, and definitely agree these are an excellent buy for anyone considering!

B Dub! *SO* glad you found this useful, comments like these are why I got into the game. Big congratulations on finding a pair on eBay, with shoes as high quality as these it makes total sense to shop them second hand becuase if anything you get a head start on the patina. Every Aussie has had the same pair for decades, it really is crazy how long they last. The funny thing with RMs is that they do look daintier given they're made of calfskin but it's really surprisingly durable, and like I say in the video calfskin itself is actually very durable, it just doesn't *look* it. Many Aussies run around muddy farms in these for their whole lives so I think you'll be happy with their performance in crappy weather. That said they work just fine as out-on-the-town nice shoes. Yep, RMs are something special alright, glad I could have spread the gospel to another follower :)

Stridewise. Hello again! Quick question from a U.S. resident, regarding where best to purchase R.M. Williams. As per my previous comments, I got my only pair so far on Ebay, so I'm wondering if you know of any difference between buying on R.M. Williams site (or their brick and mortar stores), versus from the bootsonline.com.au site you referenced. I'm after a pair of Natural Craftsmen which are listed as a special order on both sites. Their is such a significant price difference between the two sites...I'd just like to know if you've any concerns about the cheaper option. They aren't seconds, stolen from the feet of blacked-out frat boys or otherwise sketchy to your knowledge? The bootsonline website appears legit, but...why such a huge discount? Any info/opinion is appreciated. Thanks!

Can anyone help me with sizing on these? I find there is a lot of conflicting info and the more I try to figure it out the more unsure I am. The website measuring instructions isnt very helpful either... I am a 10.5 regular US size last I measured anyway. Usually I am anywhere from a 10 to 10.5 in dress shoes/traditional boots and 11 in most athletic shoes. So when they say size down, is that from the Australian size or US size? And how much to size down whole or half size? Like do I need a 9.5, so a US 10.5? Or a 9, so a US 10? Know what I mean? Im so confused haha. Id really like to get it correct the first time and not have to return boots half way across the globe!

This boot ticks so many boxes for me. Would a high-quality cobbler be able to re-panel the elastic sides? I’m here in the US, and if I were able to try them on at a retailer here and assure a good fit, my only hesitation would be repairs. I can justify the cost if, with proper care and maintenance, it will last a lifetime. I think it’s a gorgeous boot, and the easy on/off, and extreme comfort make this so appealing for everyday use. I actually enjoy maintaining shoes, so the maintenance isn’t a put off at all. Thanks for another excellent video!

I prefer oil tanned leather for really hardy wear, so any Red Wing Heritage boot will work fine, there's also the Thursdays in Rugged and Resilient leather, if you've got the money I'd get White's or Dayton though. They're about $500, but they'll last you a good decade or two. If not yeah go with one of the others!

I wanna see a chelsea battle of RM williams VS carmina VS AE. I know they’re all very different brands but all share something; a goodyear welted chelsea around $500 or so and are supposed to be amazing in both design, craftsmanship, and quality.

I’ve been looking at quite a few of them in the shop. The custom option is interesting, but a three-month wait. And not sure if I need red pull tabs or blue elastics. The only really different option is a dark red. Otherwise of course cangaroo, but they don’t have them in F. As a custom order it’s £470, and that’s too much for me.

I'm just wondering I see a LOT of people wear these boots in Australia. but every time I see them, I almost never saw a pair of rm williams boots that don't wrinkle excessively. Is it just because people who bought them don't take care of them and not use shoe trees? because at almost $600 that seems like a big concern. I have a pair of carmina boots that I got 8 years ago (probably around the same price), I wear them extensively, and they still look excellent today.. I wonder if it has something to do with the yearling leather..
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 жыл бұрын
Man I don't know hey, I think the fact that so many people own them makes it likely that a lot of them don't take care of them, just judging by the percentage of people who know how to take care of boots and that they should.
@dylanhall6355
@dylanhall6355 5 жыл бұрын
I think it has more to do with it being wholecut. Wholecut shoes tend to wrinkle quite a bit. While leather stretches, stitches can’t, so stitching in shoes usually prevents that part of the leather from much stretching/creasing excessively. Throw in the fact that it’s a boot, so it bends a lot more when you wear them than say an Oxford would, and they’re basically made to crease. Shoe trees do help though, and if you use them regularly, the boots will never get TOO creased, but if you can’t stand creasing, rm Williams aren’t the best pick for you.
@dylanhall6355

Stridewise yes, I use Renovateur often as a cleaner moisturiser. The leather becomes beautiful and soft. I also use coloured Saphir creams. For example I have been using navy blue on my black shoes. Northstar_004 hard disagree there. I’ve owned both and there’s a huge difference in quality. Most importantly, the rm Williams are Goodyear welted, while blundstone soles are molded on. That means that the soles on the rm’s are less likely to come off, and can be replaced when worn through. They’re also a lot more comfortable than blundstones, use better quality leathers, and I think are quite a bit better looking and more versatile. I love my blundstones too but they’re really an entirely different animal.
