** Verdict **
At first I didn't think this sword cane would survive my testing, as it felt somewhat flimsy. But it held up better than expected. The blade is rigid enough to be a good thrusting blade but can flex significantly and tends to bend rather than break.
As a self-defense tool I personally wouldn't trust it. It could be lethal no doubt but a determined attacker could grab and control the dull blade, and its light weight makes anything but shallow tip cuts unfeasible. The shaft could be used for striking but it seems that it might break easily.
As a costume or collector's piece it's nice enough though, and stabbing light targets like fruit or vegetables, water bottles, foam blocks etc. can definitely be fun.

I personally use a Kit Rae Axios sword cane, both for support (back/knee issues) and for self defense if the need arises. I've done several cut tests and messed around with some sparring with it and had little to no problems with it, it's very sturdy (both as a sword and a cane) I picked it up on sale for around $150 and have to say it has served and continues to serve me well.

Cold Steel's cane swords look pretty nice. They are more expensive but they put alot of thought into their design. One for example has an aluminum shaft so you could use just the cane as a defensive weapon and not just the blade.

Nice, honest review. I also have one of these Windlass buffalo horn handled sword canes in my collection. First thing that turned me off was how far the "release button" protruded from the handle shaft. It makes it VERY obvious, from a glance, that it is a sword cane. Those ridges in the horn handle are not finger grooves, the are the configuration of natural African buffalo horn. As you said, "you get what you pay for." For a truly fine, quality made sword cane, try Fayet of France or, if you REALLY have a lot of money, Burger Sword Canes of S. Africa. Thanks for the review!

I recently got a cane sword from Kult of Athena, & while I wouldn't change a thing about it, the only thing I wish had been included was a small cross guard (maybe long-knife or partial small-sword type) that attaches to the catch & helps keep the hand from slipping off the grip.

I have had that cane for possibly a decade now and there has been some oblivious changes made, and from what I see it is not for the better. The Windlass logo on mine is on the ricasso perpendicular to the blade. No rattle on this one as Windlass inserted a plastic strip in the shaft, the same as they did on my umbrella sword and Knob Handle Cane. Both of which I bought in roughly the same time frame. This applies a slight tension to one side of the blade damping sound and movement. No paint has chipped off yet and the release button is still in working order. Due in likelihood in a difference to personal physique and technique I have no problem whatsoever in making contact with the release button from the carry position. It is hard to say from the video but I believe my blade a bit stiffer than that one. I did sharpen the blade for better penetration and to prevent a possible grab. I that the scabbard is a bit light for combat. However, and this is something no one brings up regardless of sword cane, is that the scabbard can act as a diversion distracting the opponent giving on an opening. As to one reply about umbrella vs cane because canes are out of fashion I can only say that would depend on one’s country. Canes are very much in use in my country and my sword canes blend in, although I must say I prefer a stout ‘J’ handle wooden cane. Thanks for the review.

Very nice indeed. Unfortunately here in the UK, the only sword sticks that are legal to own are antique ones. I always have a habit of checking antique shops for canes and giving the tops a twist just in case I luck out and find one.

I am picking up my Cold Steel heavy duty tomorrow. I chose this one because I need a real walking stick, one strong enough for that purpose, that doesn't look like a medical device. It should not attract attention I believe I could easily pay more and get less. I handled it at the place I ordered it from. It feels strong. I like the friction lock. It has two standard size O rings that are easy to find and easy to replace, if they begin to wear. It did not rattle when shook or used for walking. That is important, of course. It arrives sharp. I will be very surprised if the grip breaks or the blade will be damaged or loosened by 'normal' usage. If I am wrong, I will send pics.

It looks like it might be a good base product for modifications. Better paint on the shaft, some kind of shim in the sheath to keep it from rattling, and maybe an o-ring at the base of the blade or throat of the sheath to give the blade a good friction lock instead of the chintzy push button.

Windlass has evidently lowered their standard on that cane. You are the second person I’ve heard to complain about the rattle. I’ve had mine maybe 10 years, maybe longer and do not experience any of those issues. It is rattle free. Mine has two plastic strips in the shaft that sandwich the blade preventing it from making contact with the shaft. Occasionally one will work free and try to escape but some glue takes care of the problem for awhile. The logo on mine is much smaller than on that one and is in two straight parallel lines running across the blade on the opposite side from the latch, which is still in place and functional. I find the location of the release not to be a problem for me, but to each their own. I sharpened the blade to ease penetration and to prevent a grab. No finish is wearing off. It has proven to be a good serviceable cane and I am sorry to see the quality issue now present.

That is why I like the Cold Steel heavy duty sword cane. Sure, it isn't the best "sword" per se, but it cuts, and hacks quite well. The one I got didn't have any sort of crap that are common with some Cold Steel weapons, except horrible smelling oil, but I can't speak for all of them.

Cold Steel makes one they call the Heavy Duty Sword Cane. It has a sharp edge and the back side of the blade is sharp for the last four inches or so. If you get it from KultAthena, it is currently 99 USD or 135 Canadian, plus shipping and an duties. There is a company in Canada that sells it for $175 CD, plus shipping. Just google "sword canes, canada". It appears to be very tough and cuts well. 24 1/2 inch blade with an aluminum cane/scabbard. Its cheap enough I am going to check it out, will tell you about it , after it arrives.

Please review the Cold Steel Heavy Duty Sword Cane. I have found it to be a decent sword at an affordable price. The balance is weirdly ok. It makes a decent slasher in my opinion and the steel is good quality. It has an issue of the scabbard dulling the sword. I would like to hear your opinion either way.

So I have to wonder, if you had a well-made one of these, like with a solid, wooden scabbard for example, could you use the scabbard part as either a defensive tool for parrying attacks or as a second weapon? Have you tried the Cold Steel word cane? Around the same price, solidly constructed, less dapper but more functional. I am disabled and have used it daily for an extended period of time and it's held up great, plus the sword portion is longer and comes very sharp. The only problem I had with mine was blowing out the O rings it uses to hold the sword in, but a little fluoro grease fixed that.
