Honestly, this lens just saved me from leaving Canon. I am tired of the lack of affordable lenses and also no third-party support for full-framelensess.

I just moved to photography recently. Got the eos R (the first full frame mirrorless), and frankly, I love the L lenses, but theyre darn expensive. Primes are OK but no weather sealing for the f/1.8 is just dood. Anyways, im thinking of getting this one vs 24-105. I have the 70-200 f4, which, while not as sharp(i tested this) as a consumer prime lens, is still really good with contrast. That lens “saved” me from changing. Whatever gives me the better IQ is the winner for me between 28-70 and 24-105 f4l imo I already know what i want to shoot, so my issue is absolutely getting the right lenses for it

@@Aneliuse I have the EF 24-105 Mark 1 and it’s a phenomenal lens. My problem is I am jealous of what the other brands get because of the third party support. Like for example I would love to use the sigma 28-48 F1.8 or the Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8.

@@Jcwwolf ofc it might be annoying, but technically you could always adapt EF third party lenses. Ofc, its hardly an optimal solution. I would also love a good wide angle prime lens under f2, which is one of the biggest advantages that fullframe gives. But 16mm f2.8 is all theyve made.

I can see that having to extend the barrel to 28mm point before you can start shooting will feel like a bit of a nuisance.... But looking at what we gain in return for this characteristic, to have the lens ready immediately at that 28mm focal length, the barrel length would be permanently as long as that slightly zoomed starting point... looks about 30mm longer. So in exchange for the chore of having to extend to 28mm position to begin shooting, one gets a shorter length lens for storage. Maybe not a perfect solution, but in most design decisions there are trade-offs as is the case in this instance. 🙌

The L series are a step above this lens. This lens offers very impressive image quality whilst combing size and weight advantages… but L series are a whole other animals with faster and often even quieter AF and better optical features leading to even better image quality. @@aNumberOne The chromatic aberration and the lack of sharpness of the RF24-105mm F4L is problematic towards the edges. Its weight at 600g is great for travel, but I now use my budget non-L primes for work portfolio. Perhaps I am just unlucky to have a bad copy of the lens, but I don't think it improved much from the EF24-105mm F4L ii. Its image quality is inferior to the budget primes and the Sigma EF 24-70mm f2.8 DG OS HSM Art (1.2kg with the EF-RF control ring mount adapter, too heavy for travel). A used RF24-70mm f2.8L is probably worth considering if your main concern is image quality.

I was on the brink of buying a control ring and a second hand EF zoom lens for my RP and then saw the announcement. I am so pleased and will definitely purchasing. Size & weight is a big issue for me as I find it really puts me off taking my camera out for the day. Buying a mirrorless full frame was meant to solve that issue. Im hoping to get my mojo back with this lens as got out of the habit of regularly using my camera. Fingers crossed.

Ahh yes it will be a great lens for the RP 😊 I hope that it helps to get your mojo back too - it’s easy to get into a habit of not taking a camera out with you - having a camera and lens combo you enjoy using makes such a difference. But also things like a strap that’s quick and easy to adjust so you can go from carrying comfortably to shooting in seconds can also be massively beneficial and help you want to take your camera out as well. I like the Peak Design Leash on smaller kit combos for this very reason. Or the Peak Design Slide Lite if you prefer wider straps.

I’m currently deciding between the 28-70mm f/2.8 and the 24-70mm f/2.8 L for travel and portrait photography. Up until now, I’ve been using the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II EF and have been really happy with it, but it’s a bit cumbersome for travel. I used to rely on my nifty fifty while traveling, but unfortunately, it broke, and Canon can’t repair it. In a way, it’s a blessing because I’ve always wanted a mid-range zoom lens with superior image quality. I’ve seen plenty of reviews for the 24-70mm, but I can’t seem to find any detailed comparisons between the new 28-70mm f/2.8 and the 24-70mm. I know the 24-70mm L series lens has an edge in terms of build and quality, but I’m curious if it’s worth the extra price and weight. Would love your thoughts on this!

From what I see, this lens will work for most photographers who are not doing professional work ( I bet some pro will have it in there bags though). So that's about 80-90% of people watching camera reviews by YT influencer who are not doing professional work, but talk about professional equipment they test for different brands. Most people that complain about cameras and lenses expecting the equipment to do the work and fix their inability to take great images, are just whiners/wankers that like to buy lots of camera equipment they don't use, or don't know how to use... lol

The RF 28-70mm F2.8 is solving size and weight issues in a F2.8 zoom lens. An EF 24-70mm F2.8L USM II with an EF-RF adapter weighs 905g and is 137mm longer versus 490g and 92mm in the RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM. The EF lens also doesn’t have IS. L series lenses are different animals - both physically and optically built to different standards. This RF lens is weather sealed to L standards, but it is not an L series lens beyond this - different AF motor, different lens coatings and lens element design, and not built to the same “workhorse” standards as an L series lens. So whilst it is a very good lens and it is impressively sharp and I do feel the price point is justified, it isn’t an L. Comparison of this RF 28-70 with an EL 24-70 F2.8L USM II… honestly I couldn’t tell you as I haven’t tested it and it’s been so long since I’ve used the EF lens - and I’ve not actually used it with and of the recent mirrorless cameras. But no IS, being much heavier and bulkier and I also suspect that the AF actually wouldn’t be on a par with this RF 28-70mm - purely because what was fast 12 years ago isn’t what’s considered fast now! It wasn’t designed to keep up with the speed and complexity of modern AF systems because they didn’t exist! Those point above would put me off *buying* an EF 24-70mm F2.8L over this RF 28-70 or the RF 24-105mm F4L. If I already had one, I’d try it out. So personally I wouldn’t want the bulky combination of adapting an EF lens - if I wanted that L glass look and build quality, within this budget, then I’d choose the RF 24-105mm F4 L and sacrifice the F2.8…. And gain the extra 35mm of reach! But everyone has different requirements and budgets to balance and what I prioritise might not be what you prioritise. Hope the above helps (sorry it’s so long, but it’s not always a clear-cut answer!) and thanks for watching 😊

Watch our video where we explain what "crop factor" is (kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWrMY4yngreDgM0) if you don't know what we mean by "equivalent focal length". You'd be better off considering the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN lens in RF mount. We've reviewed that lens here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnvVcqqMebp1gdU

The RF 28-70mm F2.8 is solving size and weight issues in a F2.8 zoom lens. An EF 24-70mm F2.8LUSM II with an EF-RF adapter weighs 905g and is 137mm longer versus 490g and 92mm in the RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM. I’m sure there are people who already do this and it makes perfect sense if you’d already invested so much money into an L series lens and want to carry on using it. But the size, weight and other RF lens mount advantages wouldn’t make an EF alternative a first choice for me.

Thanks 😊 It's a bit eye-watering at first, but I was really taken aback by the quality of it. I think it needs to be considered as a mid-high end lens, not an entry level. In Sony there's standard lenses, G lenses and G Master lenses. Canon don't have a defined middle ground... but in Sony this would be a G series for example. I'd hope to see it bundled with a body or on a when bought with saving of some sort to make the price more... tolerable, but I think when an RF 24-70mm F2.8L lens is currently £2499 RRP... we may have to consider that lens prices these days are generally just a bit nuts!

The Canon RF 200-800mm is a non-L weather sealed lens, so this is not the first.
@WilkinsonCameras
@WilkinsonCameras 4 ай бұрын
The RF 200-800mm is described by Canon as being "weather resistant" and "sealed in several locations" whereas the RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM is claimed to be the first non-L series lens with the same level of weather sealing as an L series lens.
@stephenbarlow2493
@stephenbarlow2493 4 ай бұрын
@@WilkinsonCameras - I'm not trying to be pedantic here, but there is no formal L standard of weather-proofing, and there never has been. This is not like say, OM system lenses, or Leica, which have IP ratings. Not all EF L lenses have had weather sealing gaskets, even if all the newer RF L lenses do. After the 200-800mm was released, there was much discussion about this in comparison to the 100-500mm. If you look at the Canon diagrams of weather sealing, the 200-800mm, is shown as having full weather sealing gaskets on every area the 100-500mm does. So it is not clear what this means, aside from being marketing speak. If the 28-70mm, has the same weather sealing as an L lens, then what is the weather sealing standard of an L lens? This is not to be found in any Canon literature, and it has never been formally defined. In fact, aside from a red ring, there is no standard of what makes an L lens. Prior to the RF 100-500mm, it was confidently stated, that no L lens, had a smaller aperture than f5.6. This illustrates how Canon L lens standards, are assumed, rather than defined.

@@stephenbarlow2493 We can only tell you what Canon's product team have told us directly and using readily available facts about this and the 200-800mm - and that's that this is the first non-L series "weather sealed" lens 🙂

@stephenbarlow2493 4 ай бұрын
@@WilkinsonCameras - I'm not blaming you, as all the other reviewers are saying this, and obviously this comes from Canon, as other reviewers are saying it. However, Canon themselves put out a diagram, showing the RF 200-800mm, with full weather sealing gaskets, marked in red at every point of ingress. Some lenses (not necessarily Canon), only have weather sealing gaskets on the lens mount. When Canon first described the weather sealing on the 200-800mm, it was assumed, it only had limited weather sealing gaskets. But then Canon released the diagram, showing full weather sealing.

Wow - I don't like it when people say I'm lying to them. It wouldn't benefit our company or me to lie about a lens we're selling, and it would only result in unhappy customers.. so why would I do that? First off - the photos are mostly straight out of camera jpegs - a couple had exposure adjuments from the RAW files due to me underexposing in a couple of scenarios. You must be mad if you think I have the time or inclination to manually remove CA from so many image samples in post. Second... I actually said "no noticeable aberrations" and that Canon designed the lens to have minimal CA. Definitely one of the rudest comments I've ever had on this channel, so I think perhaps it's not the channel for you.
