My heart goes out to Cripps, who deserves better. Real simple: Beveridge saw what worked with GWS and directed his own version of it. The problem was not two rucks. We got the ball but did SFA with it much of the time. Turnovers (including lots of uncharacteristic mistakes from Newman and sadly Walsh's mistakes are becoming more common), reverting to fetal position (blind bombs to a hopeless contest), a bizarre refusal to put more numbers around contests, and a mental collapse regarding body movement. Of course when the oppostion has numbers on the ball they're in a better position to run with it and we have no shape to do much about it. Then we're chasing and "we look slow". It's not rocket science. You could see it happening over and over. My two biggest pet peeves on putrid display as well: supremely wasteful kickouts and sloppy approach to the center bounce and other stoppages. Made it easy at times for Bontompelli or another opponent to slot right in to steal the ball. And where was the extra set of hands from either halfback to play free safety or a wing or forward sneaking in to receive? Cripps needs to hold an intervention like has in the past and fix the set up and approach. And did I mention turnovers and mistakes? Every kickout after a behind except maybe one (not counting initial laterals from Weitering to a teammate) was the usual bomb to a contest on the wing, on a highway to nowhere. Only once that I can recall did guys move to present targets across the middle and we marched it right up the corridor for a goal. Gave them too many goals @#$%ing about. Harry was in 10/10 form, klling it in the first half, then Lobb went on him and our ball movement was so pathetic he never saw it again. Oh, wait, what am I talking about? Harry didn't have any joy in the second half because we traded him during the offseason. Someone else was kicking three goals and making major contributions around the ground until the defense switched and our game moved away from him (Sorry, not ready to let it go, nowhere near it). No Hewett and Kennedy as sub? Against this midfield? Talk about losing the game at selection. If the coaching staff is listening to the moaners and thinking we're too slow like that to win, they need to spend a couple weeks in the 2s. Without the ball you can have 18 Usain Bolts and it won't make a difference. Even in top form Cerra and Walsh are not the right guys to throw their bodies on the line and let Cripps dance. Stupid, stubborn, refusing to see what's unfolding game after game. Don't listen to any of the mewling about arrogance. More like dumb lack of confidence from the selection geniuses and strategy instruction. Also, is Walsh hurt, carrying something? His first two games back were magical, but it's been a steady decline in quality ever since. Ignore the numbers and amount of gut running. Don't care what the Pommygram Algorithm says. He is nothing like the catalyst he needs to be. Someone has to start the conversation now: Trade Charlie! His job is to kick goals. If he can't do it and is mentally compromised, he's not helping the team. Doesn't tackle, doesn't help, wrestles instead of running his opponent around, showboating, and he's limiting Harry by being a ball hog. Get someone else in there to compliment our forward setup. Somewhere in Melbourne right now, Marchbank's on the ground again.

Was more disappointing than the loss to the Giants this one, I reckon. Against another side, with their backs against the wall and we had no hunger. The lack of two way running and defensive efforts in the middle, where they waltzed out of a stoppage unopposed to kick a goal or hit up JUH etc. was super frustrating. Good time to face a softer matchup (but can't underestimate) to work on these deficiencies. We go again! 💪🏻

Hey Tez, agree about Saad. He plays with and can be rushed into making silly mistakes but, last nights game was one of his best. He's a solid inclusion to our side. I felt for Cripps. It at times appeared that he himself was gunning for the win just so he could enjoy his milestone moment. Disappointed for him that the rest of the group was off. I loved Weitering's game though and it sucked that he got injured. I also liked Owies' game. It just felt like we were out coached in the end. Anyway we need to move on to make sure we don't butcher our game again the Roo's. I'm confident that we will win. Go Blues.

Love Cripps so much, but I'm not so sure milestone games matter that much. At the end of the day, it's just a number - the real number that mattered was the 4 points we missed out on, which we should have banked. Bulldogs just stifled us and outplayed us in exactly the same way GWS did. The blueprint to beat us is there for the competition to see, so we're going to have to adapt in time for September.

A well known commentator offered an insight that I’m sure Carlton’s brains trust would be aware of and needs to be addressed asap. In the last two losses the team has conceded 100 points against. Not good but there are enough games left to fix that and a few other key issues. I feel for Cripps. No captain could have done more to get his team over the line.

Gosh that annoyed me. Disappointed we couldn’t win for Crippa and not happy with the way we played. It just felt off all game. I didn’t think it would be easy and knew the Dogs would fire up but it’s disappointing. For the second half I sat with Doggie supporter friends in their supporter area and that was an experience. Very interesting to hear opposing supporters ‘thoughts’ about our team and players when you’re a minority supporter and on the losing side - Cripps apparently is overrated 🤦‍♀️ Anyway….. am hoping this is a blip, we reset, and work on cementing our spot in the Top 4. It’s in our own hands. In the words of our fearless leader, LFG. GBs

I recall you mentioning a few weeks ago that we should be embracing this period as the official turning point etc. I was envious of your confidence as I’m am generally an anxious and glass half empty person. We’re definitely much better but I do still see the same mistakes creep in occasionally of yesteryear and I still can’t fully trust this group. Let’s just take week by week and assess on that basis. I’d love to be able to enjoy every win knowing we’re gonna win the flag, but that’s just not the reality.
@BlueAbroad
@BlueAbroad 3 ай бұрын
I hope you didn’t take those comments as some sort of a guarantee that we’ll win the flag!? Quite simply, this club is no longer the basket case it used to be. Going to games to lash out at individual players instead of the opposition players was and will continue to be my key point. We may very well not win the flag this year but the message remains the same - we are moving towards it rather than away from it.

Definitely showed we are mentally weak side at times, I watched that last quarter in utter frustration, crippa was the only one that wanted it, most went missing and it reminded me of 2019, when it was just him trying to do it all. Made it all the more disappointing in his milestone game. After all he’s given to the club, his teammates and the coaches let him down. The two rucks did not work, pitto had 16 hit outs to advantage to English’s 2 but you wouldn’t have known, the dogs scored from their clearances and we didn’t, having the extra tall made us too slow and seemed like a strange game to play the two anyway given TDK matches up well on English and the dogs were down key talls. Even though we were below standard for most of the game, if we kick straight we win, the old adage ‘bad kicking is bad football’ couldn’t be more accurate here and the dogs could’ve punished us early but didn’t and then we could’ve punished them late and didn’t, on the weight of numbers they won as they were able to generate more effective entries. The dual Coleman medallist has to be better, you can’t accept 3.7 based on the calibre of player, especially given most of his looks were actually quite easy. Charlie wasn’t the only disappointment, unfortunately we had too many passengers for most of the game for a second straight week, we couldn’t transition the ball from the backline pretty much all game and the dogs played us well however given their depleted lineup we should’ve been able to find a way. A reset is definitely needed, get hewett in, it’s a joke he’s playing vfl, Motlop deserves a chance now as well! We should not be relying on other sides for favourable ladder positions because if they play like that in September they won’t be holding a bloody cup that’s for sure! Still time to turn it around but it starts next week, 6 rounds left now, put these two crap weeks behind us and launch into what could be one of the most important periods in the last 30 years. Go Blues!
@BlueAbroad
@BlueAbroad 3 ай бұрын
Interesting read, thanks for sharing. Regarding the hitouts to advantage, is that a ruck issue or is that our midfield issue? I think they let us down more so than the two rucks personally.
@kingragga7
@kingragga7 3 ай бұрын
@@BlueAbroad probably more of a midfield issue tbh, cerra for example gave up the ball a few times after having first possession which he needs to clean up, that’s not on pitto, however in open play he can’t provide that additional midfielder capability like de koning has been able to, with tdk playing 85-90% ruck we’re effectively able to outnumber at the core contest and make that first possession effective when winning it as we’ve essentially got 4 midfielders. I’ve been hearing that the two rucks isn’t a bad idea but the sample says we’re 3-4 in those games and 8-2 with one ruck, coincidence or is the data telling us something, I do think having both of them play could be beneficial in a matchup type scenario, eg against the dockers where we go toe to toe against Darcy and Jackson, but the doggies had a smaller side in on the weekend and English isn’t a big dominant ruck who could monster tdk like Briggs did so that’s why I thought it was a strange game to play both. What seemed evident to the eye was that we lacked a run at times so even though Tom still played 85% game time and pitto only 65%, it just felt we were too slow and would’ve benefitted from having a smaller player who could help us transition the ball as that seemed to be our big problem on the weekend (after the scores from clearance). He is a fantastic back up to have and we will probably need him again this season but Tom cannot flourish playing only 30-40% of time in the ruck. I’ll be interested to see what they do this week coming up against xerri. keen to hear your thoughts Terry on the conundrum! Go blues!
