Baked on grease is usually polymerised, which makes it very difficult to remove without a lot of work. In large-scale food applications (think deep fryers) they generally do what's called a "boil out" cleaning with a strongly basic substance (e.g. sodium hydroxide) at a high temperature - the temperature will break the polymers into smaller chains, and the basic substance will react with the ends of those chains, as they're technically acidic. This is usually followed by a decent round of mechanical abrasion (i.e. scrubbing). If you feel like experimenting further, it might be interesting to see what happens if you pop some sodium bicarbonate in with the water before you try to clean grease off things.

I don't worry about it myself, it's basically seasoning. I'll rinse my grill after every use but I only scrub all the black carbon off every few week.. It gets 500 degrees, I'm not too worried.

The jet will cool down _extremely_ quickly as it expands, so the distance from the nozzle is vitally important (that's why they show the steam hitting someone's hand at 15cm with no damage). It's possible the scourer worked because it forced you to use it much more close up. But, of course, the closer you are to the nozzle the smaller the jet is and the more work it is. It does seem kinda underpowered. The one thing you didn't try, though, is making cappucino...

"Bar Keeper's Friend" is a great product, available as either a powder or liquid, for all types of kitchen cleaning. It is aces on baked-on grease, but it does require some soaking and muscle power. As many others have said, Oven Cleaner works, too, but maybe better used outside of the house.

In my 15 years of owing a small steam cleaner (in the 20-30£ price range) i have only found one really useful purpose for it: It is amazing for defrosting iced up refrigeration systems in cases where using warm water isn’t an option, like in a consumer grade freezer or anything without proper water drainage facilities. The steam penetrates into all the hard-to-reach spaces and melts the ice in seconds without the danger of damaging or setting fire to anything. You can defrost a medium size home freezer and have it back up and running in as little as 15-20 minutes with some practice. As for the dish cleaning shown in this video, what’s even the point in a real life sutuation? Any properly working dishwasher will take care of that without any problem. Even that grill will probably be pretty clean with some hot water (80 C or above), some good detergent and a little bit of work with a dish brush. I think you need to get into the bigger (professional) stuff for steam cleaners to be really effective.

I used a heat gun to achieve the same thing when our freezer defrost only partially worked. I broke a hair dryer first. I imagine it's less messy than a steam cleaner and cheaper at about $50. But, if you already have a steam cleaner, sounds like a good option too.

Hi Matthew 👋 You gave it a quite generous “go”… It reminded me of my initial excitement when I bought one of the first Polti Vaporetto - much bigger, of course. I had to say it cleaned everything VERY well, it generated a LOT of vapor at a big pressure. But the problem was: when the reservoir was empty, you had to wait until it was cooled down (the safety valve didn’t allow you to open otherwise) to fill it with more water… So, your cleaning sessions were constantly interrupted by 15 minute breaks to cooldown, refill and wait until it was hot again 🙄 That made me use it MUCH LESS than what I imagined I would, when I bought it. @@fallingwater I’m not sure I’d recommend diy’ing a pressure vessel to get around a safety interlock. Depending on which model it is, they have up to a 6 bar (87 psi) boiler. There’s a reason it can’t be opened to be filled when hot…and it’s the same reason why you don’t take the cap off your car radiator when it’s hot.

My mom had a vaporetto. She bought it over 30 years ago, and threw it away a couple years ago. In those 30 years, I have seen her use it maybe 4 times. Almost everything you can clean with high pressure steam, you can clean easier by other means, without the hassle of setting up the steam machine.

Hi Matt, I have used similar devices in the past for spot cleaning velour car interiors but they are a bit like painting a wall with a felt tip pen. Also if you use them in an enclosed space the increase in humidity can cause condensation and mold.

It's basically a smaller, neater version of something that has existed for donkey's years. I bought one for removing wallpaper, which worked very well, and it also did a half decent job at cleaning a brick floor. Think it was £20 at the time I bought it.

as a mechanic ; i picked one up that was up for trash ; i use it weekly to clean small car parts or intricate places in engines or other difficult places i have t work on and would like cleaned; demuded and degreased. tried it on other things i must admit ; its not verry friendly if you want to use it on more that 10cm²

I'm struggling to see the difference between this and any of the other numerous brands of steam cleaner other than the fact it has fewer accessories than the competition at a vastly higher price. It does seem on par with my experience of domestic steam cleaners in terms of performance though which is they are very underwhelming and pretty much useless. Maybe professional grade units perform better, I've no experience with those so can't say but I can say that the several times I've tried products like this the results have always been way poorer than advertised,.

As soon as I saw what this was I knew exactly what the outcomes would be. I bought the VAX equivalent to clean the kitchen floor back when I was renting (maybe the oven hob too) and it took so much effort I was better off with a mop and bucket. One thing it DID turn out to be useful for, if impractical, was wallpaper stripping. Which isn't cleaning but hey. Top work as ever Mat!

We've had a steam cleaner in the past (Shark brand I think) and found it to work much better than the one you've shown here. However, when it broke we didn't replace it so says something about the whole idea of steam cleaning I guess.

We have a Shark steam floor cleaner, and it works pretty well, but part of the cleaning is from the pad on the bottom to scrub an area right after it has been steamed (and that pad is washable).

Here in the USA, Shark had a steam cleaner that I tried a decade or more ago. That was the same as this, made lots of promises but did very little, and quickly died as minerals scale quickly clogged it up.

Yeah I bought in to that as well. The infomercials were amazing. In reality it was junk… I mean it kind of worked but no way like the ads. And the steam output was about 20% of this model. It did seem to work on removing wrinkles from clothing…

Yeah remember those, we had them in Europe as well. Worked a bit, I suppose... But only if you lived in an area with soft water, otherwise you had to buy destilled water and who does that just for that thing... Also, the simplest way to do something will always win, and getting some spray and a towel out is often more convenient than getting a steam cleaner out, with all its accesories, hooking it up, filling it up, waiting for it to get hot, use it a bit and realizing the cord is too short for using it in another room so you have to unplug it every time you move around and also, the steam is all out after a couple of minutes...

There's something fundamentally wrong with a steam cleaner where you can put your hand in the steam output without getting burnt.

This is very true. The steam cleaner i used, would instantly scald you if you'd dare to put your hand into the stream. The effective cleaning bit was only a few centimeters from the output. Any further from the hole, and the steam condenses into water vapor which doesn't have more cleaning power than normal hot water.

In my experience with a Kärcher steam cleaner clean laminate floors, it only works if you combine it with some kind of microfiber cloth or brush. Steam by itself never did anything for me.

It's logical that you need a microfiber floor cloth. Otherwise where should the dirt go? The steam loosens the dirt and the cloth "sucks" it up. Works for me just fine.

10 years ago I had a Vaporetto that works exactly the same way while being bigger and bulkier. Your results are consistent with the ones I had back then. It used to be very good to clean windows and glass doors in general

What can I say? Loved the video, as always. The way you're frank about testing it, even if it is something you backed and hoped would work better. I think the pressure is just not strong enough to push that grease out of the way. If they could increase the PSI, maybe it would be of better use. Thank you, Mat, for these great videos. Love your videos! I have a Menuett hand held small one and I love it. It cost about 15 £ on a hardware store company members only night sale. More portable than the one in the video and also smaller tank. Using it in average of 4-5 times per month. Used it with good results for taking of stickers from things, wallpaper removal, motor parts from car and lawnmower etc, bicycle parts and chain cleaning, windows cleaning, first clean of stuff I bought second hand, restoring hammer marks from wood, car interior cleaning and after kids been home alone and made jelly sandwiches or smeared some other sweet stuff in the kitchen like sticky soda "accidents" on the floor or table that have dried and are sticky. It is not the best steam cleaner. Actually most review it as the worst. Never the less i like it and think it is good enough for our use. After more than 2 years of use there is no signs of giving up any time soon. When it does though I will buy a high end one. There are tricks to get the best out of the steamer. For example, for bathrooms and toilets you can have a little vinegar or / and citric acid in the tank to easier get rid of limescale deposits and mold. For some things I use dishwasher detergent mixed with water in a spray bottle. I spray it on thing I want to clean and let it work for some minute and then clean with the steam cleaner. I could continue to list things I use it for and tricks needed to get the best out of it but I will save it for my memoirs.

Anyone with false teeth would already know that Steradent (in UK) or any similar does an excellent job, fill the mug with hot/warm water and pop in a tablet. If really bad, then just leave overnight, wipe out , and it's as good as new.

There are loads of products like this one on the market that are supposed to make things easier, but in the end, just make everything more complicated than it should be. Sometimes a bit of elbow grease and some hassle-free assistance from a dishwasher is all that’s required. A waste of plastic too.

About 20 years ago I got a pressure steamer for stripping cosmolene off of gun parts without depending on chemical solvents. Works great for that ... and not anything else. Oh, and this device you have doesn't "sterilize" anything. The heat of the steam dissipates so quickly and the materials one applies the device to will sink enough of the heat that only the smallest regions will ever get to a temperature high enough to kill off micro-beasties, and then the condensed wash from nearby dirty areas you're working on will cover the places you just "sterilized" and make them dirty again. From the moment you unboxed it I could see you setting a pile of money on fire. Still, it was good to see you work through the claims and demonstrate the fallacies of "steam-powered" cleaning devices. Thanks!

As a KP of 10+ years experience, the best way to clean a dirty grill like that is good old fashioned oven cleaner and elbow grease ( a sponge scourer and metal scourer work wonders too ).

That surface seems to have some sort of coating so i wouldn't use scourer. Baking soda and sponge many times does the trick or some vinegar first and then some baking soda and sponge action.

Cleaning tip for that grill pan - use special oven-cleaning detergent on it, preferably one in form of a powder. They are designed to get rid of baked-in grease.

I bought a hand held steamer (not this one) and I had the same experience, but I finally found a use for it, I have a chest freezer that needs defrosting once a year, the steamer made short work of getting the ice out.

A suggestion: some chap in Japan found out that steam cleaning with a bit of sodium bicarbonate in it (but not too much) did a great job of cleaning graffiti off of walls. So maybe try adding a bit baking soda to the water?

Great video Matt! This is a product that's clearly aimed at the "concerned" consumer that buys products based on keywords like "chemical free" and so on. Like others have said the steam cleaner needs to be more powerful in order to do a good job of cleaning. However, a more powerful unit does pose a larger risk of steam burns and so on. So you end up with a unit like this that appears to do a lot but really doesn't do much of anything beyond make things moist.

Good job doing the review! I think everyone has nailed it with the NaOH suggestions for your grill. There's tons of it for sale online, but it all seems to be food grade and expensive. What I want to find is "clean-your-car-engine" grade that is dirt cheap so that I can soak well-baked-on pots and pans on a grand scale.. (A neighborhood restaurant regularly tosses heavy, non-stick aluminum frying pans with silicon rubber handles instead of cleaning them, so I have 15 of them now!) Dissolving the gook is better than scrubbing in order to preserve the non-stick coatings, which are easily scrubbed off by steel wool. It's amazing the number of high-quality cookware items people discard simply to avoid the work of removing the gook. Back to the steam cleaner, what about cleaning upholstery with it? Will it get surface material clean without water logging the stuffing? I usually use dish soap and a hose nozzle, which you can get away with on a super-hot summer day (to dry it in a reasonable time), but things have to be lugged out of doors. Perhaps with the dryer steam it can be done over a makeshift tray indoors. Another factor when cleaning your grill is the thermal output of the cleaner vs. thermal inertia of the grill. The steam may be hot, but there is not enough of it overcome the radiation back to the air. As a test of this theory, how about preheating the grill and then steam cleaning? Finally, at the dinner table, you could steam one string bean or.stalk of asparagus on your plate, and then hand the wand off to a dinner guest to see how they react. The look on their face possibly could be worth the initial investment.

From my experience Sodium Hydroxide will react with exposed Aluminium. I suppose that this might not be a problem if the metal is protected by the non-stick coating or other finishes.

If you want cheap and nasty sodium hydroxide, get some drain cleaner. The liquid stuff can be sodium hydroxide (with a bunch of additives) or hydrochloric acid (again, with lots of additives) solution, so check the bottle before buying. The "crystals" type is generally always sodium hydroxide. That stuff is crazy, if you get it hot enough, it can eat through glass.

To clean a stained cup/mug: Make sure it's dry. Put a couple of teaspoons of sugar in the mug. Then just wipe it all out with a dish sponge. The sugar takes out all the stains. @@jamespaddick244 Yes they do. I use denture tablets to clean/sterilise my metal drinking bottles. I just fill them up with hot water and plop a denture tablet in there and leave to soak for a couple of hours. A quick rinse out and all smells are gone.

I'm sure that I already own something pretty similar to this device. It's called a wallpaper steramer, which is pretty much a kettle element in a plastic box with a hose leading to a flat, wide attachment. And while it does not pressure the steam, I am sure that they only cost a little more than a cheap kettle does. 450 quid for a fancy kettle seems to be a lot of money to me.

Aldi has a hand held device a fraction of the price (£20 I think) Comes with more attachments and works reasonably well on glass. I saw it was back in stock today as well. I've used it on my oven door which was a challenge, but it did bring a lot of grease off.👍

btw, there are proper handheld steam cleaners available for much less, perhaps a bit less stylish, but a lot more effective AND much cheaper - around $40AUD and I find our one (by vax I believe) to be a little slow to warm up but very effective on mould and soap scum buildup around bathroom fixtures. It's a little bulky and an all in one unit but it has very good ergonomics and is really quite light so not really a problem.

For baked-on grease there is really one way to go: strong alkaline solution. By strong I mean NaOH or something similar. With cast iron pots strong abrasives might also help, but certainly they can't be used with non-stick dishes.

Alkaline degreaser. 👍 You should be able to find it in a car detailing shop online. Saved many a burnt pot and pan here. Works great on the car too.

I bought a Polti Vaporetto years ago to clean absolutely filthy stoves at apartments when a tenant moved out. I also used it to clean greasy walls for painting. It would run low on pressure fairly quickly, and it didn't work well on the stoves. On walls, it worked, but was slow. I used it for a cloth over one of the tools. The problem was that the cloths would get dirty quickly and I would have to change them. One of the units I had started leaking, and the other burned out the heating element, both a lot sooner than I expected. These were less than what I expected, and I can imagine that this small one would be disappointing. The biggest problem with all of these products is the limit of how much power is available in the home. In the US, there are a lot of older homes that have 15 amp 120 volt outlet circuits, and newer homes have 20 amp circuits. That is a maximum of 1800 watts for the older houses, and 2400 watts for the newer ones. The ad for the Vaporetto showed someone cleaning a car engine with one. Nope, wouldn't happen, not enough steam!! You would have to have a unit that is about 2500 watts, but over 3000 watts would be better.

This is one of the many why I watch your videos m8, the down right honesty is refreshing especially these days that when said product simply fails to deliver, you grow a pair and say it as it is. I’ve been sold and told to go buy this and go buy that, been highly recommended and all but most tends to end up like that gizmo and just sits on a box somewhere until I forget how much I paid for the darn thing. That’s the nature of these sort of things tho, sometimes you have to get one yourself and see how impractical it truly is irl. Oh well, there’s always that next great purchase I say 👍🏼 I have a quarterly habit of presume washing all sorts of things for the past few years now since the pandemic kept us indoors. A proper pressure washer will make quick work of that baked in stubborn stains in a jiffy. The problem is that water gets everywhere and it can at times cause permanent damage if your not careful with your wand. I would strap that annoyingly shaped and very hard to clean part and go over it once or twice and that ought to do it for the most part (at least with the one I have anyway) but make sure your not going so hard that you end up stripping that non stick layer off. I have several of those things as part of my blasting routine and I tell your what, it sounds fun until you do it a few times and have gotten it out of your system, until then it quickly feels like a chore like with many things unfortunately.

Years ago, I bought a Steam Buggy -- pretty much the same idea as the Dayoo. It, too, was a failure. The "steam" is not very hot, which is understandable for a device intended for home use by ordinary, i.e. careless, people. I never tried to measure the steam's temperature, but I doubt it was much above 250 F/ 121 C.

Steam cleaning can work fine but this unit seems vastly underpowered. Kind of like trying to use a propane soldering torch to melt the ice on a sidewalk - it just does not have sufficient capacity to make any difference. Frankly, here in the USA, the standard full-sized dishwasher, set on "Pots & Pans," and using both soap cups filled, would clean all those dish/cooking items with a whole lot less hassle. Good video and I agree - I cannot think of anything I could use it for.

@@proudofyourroots9575 I was under the impression dishwashers and in-sink disposals are not as common as here in the USA. I have seen a few of the Euro brand dishwashers and thought them to be a bit on the small side and all about "saving water." I'm on the East Coast of the USA and the availability of water is not really a concern. Our standard dishwasher is 24" x 36" tall (61cm x 91cm). But, if dishwashers are common, my apologies! BTW, I still can't quite understand why sinks have separate taps for hot and cold instead of just one spigot usually with one control. I don't see you get warm water without having to fill the sink. But, whatever one becomes accustomed to!

Seems very underpowered both in terms of volume of steam and also temperature- I'm sure most people know, but true 'steam' is invisible to the eye when it's hot enough. If the 'focal point' of the steam was further away, it was hotter and had more volume/throughput it would probably be genuinely useful, but it would also be quite dangerous. Unfortunately there is no getting around or away from that with a really decent steam cleaner, but it would probably be a whole lot better to use

@@brookiecookie472 "Steam" is a fairly broad, non-scientific term for water vapour. You see "steam" coming off dewy grass on a sunny morning, and steam is used to propel massive turbines in power stations but they're two very different forms. The latter is indeed completely transparent because it is super heated and so stays in vapour form whilst it is doing work. The steam from this device is barely at 100C so is condensing back out to liquid droplets as soon as it leaves the nozzle.

This device is probably better suited for cleaning surfaces that don't like abrasion and chemicals, plus for disinfection without chemicals. If this steamer came with a long nozzle+brush, then it could've been great for cleaning bottles, canteens, and such. BTW, thank you for this great video! Years ago, there was a company selling a steamer on late-night infomercials here; their big selling point was that it was a "chemical-free" cleaning option, playing to our inner hippie. After weeks in circulation, they amended the advertisement to include an additive for the water, probably a sort of Oxy Clean-style powder, presumably so it stood a chance of actually cleaning things. But they maintained it was still free of *harsh* chemicals.

Just thought I would point out that the small amount of residue left on the griddle actually helps the thing keep itself clean and non stick ! People have to "season" cast iron pans to get the same effect. The carbon residue deposits bind into the metal and form points and indentations and after time food will not stick to the pan. But that means NOT washing them with scouring pads ! Just a simple wash with soap and water with a sponge is most suited, which seems to be what you were doing in the first place :)

Hi Matt, I've noticed you always used the "max" setting. I have no idea how this device works but it seems there was a lot of water spray out of the nozzle. This suggests to me that the poti regulates water flow and you would get more and hotter steam by dialling it down.

I recently bought a similar device that from the looks of this one in the video, I'm glad I got the one I have-- I can recommend mine-- it comes with a LOT of attachments, including ones for tile floor mopping which was one of my main applications, and it works well for that. It puts out a nice solid stream of steam and holds 1/2 gallon (actually, holds more but you're not supposed to fill it more than 1/2). And it's not much more expensive than what Techmoan paid for his. Also, it's made by a manufacturer that has been around for quite some time, known mostly for chainsaws, McCulloch. Cost in US at $199

Had the exact same experience with one of those, as apparently just anyone in the comments. Now I just use regular vinegar, which is great for most cases. A cheap spray bottle with the stuff will remove most stains on most surfaces. A pot of boiled vinegar will be even more efficient for baked in kitchen dirt (and as a bonus, the inside of the boiling pot will be sparkling clean). Don't put it in a steamer unless you don't enjoy having lungs that are not on fire. A bit of baking soda with vinegar will also help with some harsher stains or rust (again, don't breath in the fumes).

From my experience, steam cleaners are nice for sanitizing metal things you touch a lot. Handles, knobs, switches, etc. They also work well on the gunk that builds up in the seams around the hardware in your bathroom. Speaking of power washers, that might be an actual solution for that dirty grill.

Have you tried to measure the temperature of the 'steam' exiting the nozzle? It looks like there's mostly water jetting out with a bit of steam for dramatic effect. The glove was no doubt to calm down the Elfin Safety people in UK Customs!

These steam cleaner have been around for years and they're almost universally a waste of money. I have a steam mop and it basically does nothing. Steam won't cut grease because oil is still hydrophobic. Duh. That's why soap exists. Steam needs pressure to clean, and the kind of pressure needed is something these devices aren't capable of.

My father was a dry cleaner, and sold himself as an expert stain remover. His secret, a collection of specialty detergents, enzymes, and the steam wand which pushed those solvents through and out of the garment. Your baked-on food is either dehydrated (just soak it) or oil based (monopolor chemicals like oil resist dissolving in bipolar chemicals like water). smoking in soap is so effective because it crossed the mono-bi-polar divide and emulsifies the grease into the water.
