This is a great detailed overview of this guitar. The frets on mine are also only rounded on the treble side, so i'm guessing that's how they approach it at the factory to probably save on labour, which is fair enough as it is a little bit more important on the treble side and both sides having a smooth feel is what really matters, though it did also surprise me, generally if someone is going to the trouble of dressing the frets you would round off both sides, but it's def an interesting observation i wouldn't have picked up without this video

That is in fact interesting that you also have a guitar with the fret end dressed only on the treble side. And I think you're definitely onto something with your theory that this is intentional, to save costs, as most players won't notice sharper frets on the bass side. Very interesting. Thank you very much for taking the time to share this.

Enjoyed this microscopic fret and nut inspection and your overall critique. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this beautiful guitar in future episodes. And your playing is not bad at all so no need to apologize, brother. I own several Epi electrics and for price-point production guitars they're very good or excellent, and fairly comparable to more expensive brands, including their lookalike cousins from Gibson, IMO. The few small things that Epiphones sometimes fall short on are usually easy to fix quickly and/or cheaply, I can do that myself, and I enjoy tinkering with guitars anyway so for me it's a win-win. I got a perfect Epi LP Studio a few years ago for a steal of a price, and my other Epis are also better than what I paid for. Given a $3K allowance today, I would likely buy several Epiphone before one Gibson. No argument with those who disagree. I want everyone to be as happy as possible. Buy and play what you like. I do.

You make a very good point about a win-win for those of us who enjoy tinkering. I am mostly buy Gibson guitars, and every single one of them needed some work. But, just like you said, I enjoy it, so no problem. The first follow-up video I’m going to use this for will be a side-by-side comparison with a similar Gibson. That will set the stage for the videos to follow, which will be about upgrading this guitar, using Gibson components. I am thinking of making about five videos altogether, which would probably take me about a year to do.

I never saw such a deep review and analysis. Thank you for this. Superb review and work. But how about the weight? It's possible to know if the body is chambered?
@GuitarQuackery

Thank you for dropping by. I did not put this guitar on the scale, but I guess I can do it in the future, as I do have plans to do some mods to this guitar, if I ever find the time to do it. I think the only way to know for sure if the guitar body is chambered is to do some kinds of X-ray. I do believe that it would be revealed in the specs, if the body was chambered, as it is extra work and would probably increase the price. At least that would be my guess. If you like the channel, make sure you tell your friends. Thanks.

Thanks for the interesting video! I am looking for a decent Les Paul after years of Stratocaster, but since I am not playing that much anymore..I was thrilled by this very Epiphone 60s standard, instead of Gibson. After many videos of people just playing finally a technical comparison! I've also realized we've common friends on this side of the Atlantic...actually I am working with Leon (that's why I recongnized you from a video-call and voice..). Cheers from Italy!

Small world indeed. An Epiphone has a slightly longer scale length than a Gibson. It can possibly be a better transition from a much longer Fender scale length. But I am not really sure how much people will notice the difference.

@@GuitarQuackery anyway I've played some Epiphones LP (made in the late 90s) and a couple of heavy Gibsons LP from the 80's or older and had a very good feeling with the last one, despite the weight and the thick neck. These recent EPI's seems have improved a lot...moreover they have a slimmer neck and the probuckers sounds really good (I've heard a comparison with another Epi LP 50). There are so many good guitars with humbuckers out there, but really always had a crush on LP, and this one looks really nice, without "costing a kidney" as we say in Italy :) . Have a good day!

@@andreavivenzi3608 I recently bought two Epiphone Les Paul guitars. One of them you saw in this video, the other one is for some other videos. Both will be sold after some upgrades, which will be recorded for KZbin. One of them is a 60s (this one) and the other one is a 50s model. Bothe will go through some Gibson upgrades and some subtle mods. And both will get hard cases and certificates issued by Guitar Quackery, the NYC Department of Guitar Maintenance & Repairs, and the Guitar Technicians' Guild. When I am done with these projects they will be listed for sale, probably on Reverb. I am not sure of the prices, but probably around $3,000 apiece. Yes, around the same price as a Gibson USA model. But quality will be better than Gibson USA. One thing for sure, I will keep the Epiphone logo. I don't want to make any counterfeit guitars. Those will be Epiphones and they will be unique.

Thank you for your feedback. I always look at each guitar individually. While there are definitely features of guitars that can make some guitars either superior or inferior to some other guitars, when it comes to guitars that aren't too different form each other, it is best to look at each selected guitar separately, regardless of brand name. Hope this makes sense.

As it turns out, I was just looking over two Epiphone Les Paul Custom models. Both with P 90 pick ups. I thought they were both killer guitars. Unfortunately, not every Guitar that I look at can end up in the videos. Not enough hours in the day. That said, I never advise any potential buyers to go by any Guitar reviews while evaluating if they should buy a guitar of the same make and model. Each guitar is its own individual entity. What grain is like a fingerprint. And then different people work at the factory. Just because the Guitar has the same headstock logo, it doesn’t mean that’s the same as another one that was reviewed on KZbin.

Wilkinson tuners and pickups etc. are great!
@GuitarQuackery
@GuitarQuackery 10 ай бұрын
True. There are quite a few Wilkinson hardware components that are totally solid. I think the point that many of the commentators are trying to make, is that Wilkinson tuning machines are cheaper than Grovers. But the manufacturer changed the components without adjusting the final price of the assembled product and continued to list the product stating that it has Grovers. If the Guitar had solid gold strap buttons, and the listing said that it has solid gold strap buttons, and the guitar was listed at a certain price, people expect that the guitar is sold as described, at that price. The manufacturer should not just start selling guitars with gold plated strap buttons, without adjusting the price and without disclosing the fact that the strap button are now only gold plated. Even if they function just as well as the solid gold ones. Hope this makes sense.
