Your hardware reviews are super helpful especially as it concerns the IO and A/D factors. I also watched your 500R8 review. I happen to have both units, but they're racked and I wanted a refresher on the back panels. Thanks! BTW, I'm feeding the Scarlett (Gen 3) to the Cranborne via ADAT. This is really cool given the physical instruments/mics going into the Scarlett.

First of all, great vid! So I plan on connecting a dbx compressor, a few effects processors and a guitar to my laptop. Do you think my laptop will be able to handle all that power, or does this focusrite help absorb a lot of the power? I have one of the later MacBook Pro models btw. Thanks 👍
@mattingramsound
@mattingramsound 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad you liked the video. I'm sure your macbook can handle it. The question is, how much latency will you have. If by "later" you mean newer, than your latency will be low while you record over playback. If you mean older, than you may have to turn up your buffer to compensate for processing power, which creates latency. Hope this helps!

Hi quick question about the focusrite control app thing. If I wanted to simply play bass into the focusrite can’t I do that by enabling the monitor switch without the software? I’m guessing the softwares for assignment of the outs headphone cue and stuff. Also can you use this with just the power supply and not the usb cable to be used like a mixer? Final question is it possible to power the device with only the usb cable? Thank you

Great review ^^ im still banging my head to find a really cool A/I with a nice range of I/O ++ a kinda advanced Control App to setup different type of routing (Ext. HW insert) .....N IMO it's a real mess to figure out what will fit the best your own needs !!!! I've been putting on my list the Tascam 208i which could be easily extended with 8 Pres on ADAT .....I had the Motu 828mk3 on my list as well until i got the confirmation with various long term users that it really sucks on many aspects/issues (HW/SF) ........the Focusrite is a serious option in front of the Tascam in the same price range considering the additional Ext. Preamps extension ......but to say the truth im not a great fan of their App Design (all black it's kinda very boring) the Tascam has a more lively designed App with cool DSP onboard but im not sure 4 the routing part (( it's not clear at all in the manual what could be really done with this unit )) the FCR reviews/manual R more detailed on that point since Im already sure that it features multiple monitor & Insert Routing with outboard gears (the Tascam is very allusive on that) .....i told you this thing is a real mess o_O

is it possible to put 8 headphone outputs for the 8 channels? how does everyone listen to what they are playing
@mattingramsound
@mattingramsound 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can create 8 separate mixes on the 8 outputs. You would need some kind of DAW to create those mixes, and you would need something to convert the mono outputs into stereo headphone jacks. This could be done with a multi channel headphone amp.
@Ray_Argues
@Ray_Argues 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattingramsound Do you always need a separate DAW to mix the outputs? I thought I saw in another video, where the guy walks through the setup of 18i20, options for the output in the focusrite application. You can select which inputs to include in specific outputs.
@MsSpicynipples
@MsSpicynipples 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ray_Argues Focusrite says you can do 6 mixes on their software (no daw). There are 5 pairs of outputs on the back, and 2 headphone outs on the front. I'm assuming one of the mixes will duplicated to 2 outs (maybe the same mix on headphone 1 will be in monitor outs 1-2) since there are just 6 mixes available and 7 total stereo outs.

Looking forward on having another set of monitor speakers for another overall reference of how my final product will sound. I have my main Main monitors on 1-2. How would I set up my other set of monitors to 3-4 ? Do I have to do go thru the Control App or can I do it all straight thru my DAW (Pro Tools)?

I think using multiple sets of monitors this way will be quite cumbersome. I recommend getting a monitor control station. The big knob passive is quite affordable, (and I have a review of it on my channel), or you can go with the slightly more expensive versions for more bells and whistles. This would give you on button switching from monitors A to B.

Nice review. I have been eyeing the Focusrite 18i20 for recording drums. Do you think that the preamp issues that you referenced will affect drum recording? Could I just use the out of the box software for mixing without a DAW? I’m a newbie when it comes up recording. What are some other options to consider in this price range (e.g. Behringer, Presonus etc.)?
@mattingramsound

Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Like I said, for the money, if you want 8 channels, you won't find much better. You can look into the presonus, motu, or Audient interfaces. Though I have never really liked the presonus stuff. Stay away from Behringer in that price range. I've recorded drums with the 18i20 before, and if your source sounds good, so will your recording!

Thank you! It depends what you are recording for and how you record. If you plan on releasing this music, I would recommend recording your acoustic guitar in stereo. So if you are recording guitar and vox at the same time, you will need 3 channels, if you are recording the separately, then 2 channels is all you need. If thats the case, the 2i2 will do fine. If your music blows up, you may want to upgrade down the line.

I guess I need to watch your first review with Windows 7 to see what I’m in for :) I have an old HP laptop that works fine with my Sony ACID Pro 7 DAW, M-Audio Fast Track Pro two channel interface that requires that specific M-Audio Asio driver for Acid to recognize it. I wonder if this would work on my laptop. Need to make some videos with live recording and 8 channels will do the trick in most instances. With your Windows 10 and Pro Tools did you need to install an Asio driver and did it require extensive dialing in? If so does Focusrite provide tech support over the phone?

@@mattingramsound Thanks. I need to up my game and at least be able to record a live four piece band - 8 channels assuming just a couple overheads for the drummer and one mic, one instrument (mic or line in) per musician. One man operation and I travel light - Nikon Z7, GoPro in back for emergency clips, and I walk around with iPhone 12. All synchs up in Final Cut automatically when you select Clip, synchronize with audio. So last weekend took my old laptop and 2 ch M-Audio box for a gig. Came back and missed the audio which I intercepted between mics and mixer - I.e. mic and guitar into my box first and output that line in on her mixer and on to powered speakers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqvLZn2da7SSrNU

Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 or Tascam US-20X20 USB 3.0 Audio Interface? Which one would you go for? Why?
@mattingramsound
@mattingramsound 4 жыл бұрын
They are pretty similar, except that the Tascam has the 2 additional line inputs on the back. I have had good experiences with tascam in the past, but have never tried the interface. I think it comes down to what you want and like. Focusrite does come with pro tools first and a bunch of really cool plug ins, but the tascam has those extra inputs and is USB 3.0. I might lean more towards the tascam just based on the USB 3 alone, but I recommend getting them both in a controlled space and auditioning them. Sound is king.

So if I wanted to get one of these to say plug 2 guitars and a bass or more directly into the unit (to use VST sims etc) I'd need active DI for inputs 3-8? For example a Behringer Ultra-DI Pro DI800 DI box? Guitar directly to -> Behringer -> Focusrite Input 3 line in? But I could plug a mic directly into 3-8 without needing an active DI infront of it?
@mattingramsound
@mattingramsound 2 жыл бұрын
Close. Yes, inputs 1 and 2 are designed to take HI Z instrument level signals, and the others are for Lo Z mic level. However, you do not need an active DI to convert your instrument to LO Z, any DI will do. Also, I would recommend never using behringer DI's, and I always use a DI when I go direct, regardless of input.

If it is an insert, you would just route it out of one of the outputs to your device, and then back into one of the inputs. However, if it is a preamp, then you would have to go out of a pre, into another pre, which is not recommended.

@mattingramsound
@mattingramsound 4 жыл бұрын
You would need to bypass the pre amp. That unit has a line input on the back, which comes in after the pre. So it would look like this: Mic > Focusrite input > DAW > Focusrite out > Begringer line in > Behringer Main out > Focusrite line in > DAW. Make sense?

NIce video dude. I have kind of a dilemma, and any word of advice will be greatly appreciated. I have no experience whatsoever with this stuff. Most of the terms i hear sound like a foreign language to me. I've seen and read enough reviews to get an idea of what can be done with such devices. Based on this, i've narrowed down that this is probably the interface i need. I am looking to record drums, acoustic and electric piano, electric, acoustic, and classical guitar, bass and maybe violin, and pretty much any other noise i can make. I am willing to wait a few months to get more educated on the subject, before i spend money on this and any other equipment i may need. Long story short, any advice about getting educated on how to use this, what equipment i need and anything else i need to know, so that when i purchase this or whatever interface i choose, i won't go insane trying to figure out what i'm doing. Thank you again, much appreciated.
@mattingramsound

I don't really have a full, end to end, comprehensive guide I can point you to. I learned all this from my formal education and years of on the job experience. I'm sure you could find a good book or website that could go over it all, but most will be learned by hands on anyways. Just think about it in terms of the signal path: Signal starts with the instrument, (I assume you have that already), so then you need to capture it. You can do this simply with a couple mics and DI's. Which mics and how many depends on how many things you will be recording at the same time. Then, those sources have to go into an interface, (really pre amps and then converters, but an interface combines the 2). you can use this interface, or really any competitor to get decent enough sound. The interface goes into your recoding software, which in my case is pro tools. Finally, you need a way to hear it, (your musicians do as well), so get some audio monitors and headphones. You can do a ton with just that!

There are many ways you can use a headphone amp. If it only has a couple headphone outputs, then just use the dedicated headphone outs on the focusrite, without the amp. If it has more than two, then you can go into the headphone amp via the headphone outs on the interface, or even better, use a stereo pair of TRS outputs on the interface into the amp. If the amp has multiple channels, you can do multiple mixes via the 8 TRS outputs on the back of the interface, doing either 8 mono mixes, or 4 stereo mixes. Hope this helps!

This would depend on a couple things. If you are a musician performing the song in the same room as the rig, you have to have headphones on. Obviously you can't have speakers in the room with the open mics. If you are the engineer, just put you rig in an adjacent room, and run you xlr's and headphone cables into the live room.

At Focusrite, you'll get an audio interface with outdated USB 2.0 connectivity instead of the the current USB 3.0 or USB 3.2. We could make it faster but, we just don't. You'll also get outdated plug-in suites with your purchase that you can't even use like the Focusrite Red 2 & Red 3 Plug-in Suite but in the end it really won't matter because your audio interface will soon become a brick that will not even work with your continually updated OS because... we just stop giving you the support you need and we will soon delete your interface completely off of our own website. We will try to sell you a new one soon though and we'll do the same thing to you with it. At Focusrite we care... about pocketing your money. 👍 😉

USB 2.0 supports speeds up to 480MB/s. Even at max recording settings, and maxed out channels, the bandwidth is enough to get the job done. I’d prefer Focusrite would keep the price low instead of adding another $100 to the already mediocrely high msrp price of $600 for this thing. Next gen isn’t everything, bud.
