This is great but please can I just remind about two videos Dave did where he implied they would both be parts of two new series. These were (1) the Universal Edition coffee table book on Mahler with conductor interviews and (2) concert disasters we've attended. Haha this one was great fun ! Sorry if I've been a dumbo and missed the sequels (DH is so prolific)

By way of the Air on a G String: My uncle played bass in the orchestra, 1947-83, and I was at Blossom for the first concert they played after Szell died (the next day, as I recall; a Sunday afternoon). I think that Aaron Copland was the guest conductor that day, but before the beginning of the second half, the orchestra played the Air without a conductor, in memoriam of Szell. Even to a 15-year-old, it was a deeply moving experience.

Those were great days for Cleveland and the orchestra. Thank you.

@@poturbg8698 I think you're right. Szell died on July 30, 1970, and the Cleveland Orchestra's 75th anniversary CD set includes a live recording of Prokofiev's Scythian Suite from Blossom on July 30, 1970, conducted by Boulez. It's a pretty great performance, too; Szell would have been happy to know that they were playing so well. Also on the program that night was Misha Dichter in the Brahms first piano concerto. I note that because my first Cleveland Orchestra concert at Blossom (when I was 18) was on July 30, 1976, and, among other things, the orchestra played the Brahms First with Misha Dichter, Erich Leinsdorf conducting. I've sometimes wondered if scheduling Dichter for Brahms 1 on the exact anniversary of Szell's death was more than a coincidence.

I believe that very performance of the Air was posted on YT but subsequently taken off a few years ago for some reason. Anyhow I recall that it was played without a conductor - but of course led by concertmaster Daniel Majeske.

Szell on Somm - sounds like an upscale ski resort...
